Penny takes us around the vicoletti in Rome’s Trastevere, well known for keeping the historical soul of the city alive.
This particular cafe, on Vicolo del Piede, in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, is often photographed for obvious reasons – the beautiful colors and textures of the building, the luscious vines and ivy growing overhead and the cobblestone streets. It’s a nice quiet little street, where you can get away from the crowds and relax with a coffee or glass of wine and watch the world go by. If you wander around Trastevere long enough, you’re bound to walk down Vicolo del Piede (the alley of the foot).
Trastevere used to be one of those “off the beaten path” kind of places, but it’s really not now. There are two universities there, and more often than not you will see more tourists and American students than Trasteverini (the name for the locals) there. However, it’s medieval, winding streets, atmosphere, and history make it a neighborhood not to be missed if you have the time. I’ve stayed in Trastevere almost every trip to Rome and some of my most cherished memories live there.
I do have one tip for you that you may not find elsewhere, watch where you’re walking, because the local dogs don’t.
