Saturday proved to be an extraordinary day for one of Orange County’s most beloved residents. Humanitarian Sir Bruno Serato, who founded a nonprofit that feeds 6,000 underprivileged Southern California children each week, was invited backstage to meet his idol, screen legend and Oscar winner Sophia Loren, who had just finished a one-woman performance at the Venetian in Las Vegas. The two Italian greats enjoyed a moment of mutual admiration during which Serato discussed his work helping Orange County “motel kids,” many of whom live with their families in squalid, crime-filled, one-room environments.
“I first told her how much of a fan I am and then had an opportunity to give her an overview of the work we do with Caterina’s Club,” said Serato. “She was impressed and wished us well.”
Serato’s decade-plus humanitarian efforts were recently recognized by Pope Francis, who extended his blessing to the countless volunteers and supporters of Caterina’s Club. A Huntington Beach resident, Serato has been profiled in magazines the world over including People Magazine several times as well as on countless national television programs including the “CBS Evening News.” He is best known for his place among CNN’s Top 10 Heroes, being knighted by the Italian government and receiving a humanitarian award on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.For more information about Caterina’s Club visit www.CaterinasClub.org.
