The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Bari has launched an extra-virgin olive oil identification system to help tackle fraudulent production and to recognise quality oil, the project’s organisers said on Thursday.

The so-called “In Oleo Veritas” is a tracing system which can be used to identify extra-virgin olive oil throughout the supply chain. It involves traditional chemical olive oil tests as well as pesticide residue detection, and analysis of changes to the olive oil at various production steps.

Although it costs 500 euros for olive oil producers to undergo the testing, the Chamber of Commerce will mostly cover for firms registered with them. After the analysis, producers will be given a QR code they can apply to packaging, which buyers can use to access all the information about the oil via smartphone, or on the website www.inoleoveritas.it.
