Choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti is the new director of Milan’s La Scala Theater Ballet, superintendent Alexander Pereira told a meeting of La Scala theater board of directors Monday. The post was left vacant on January 15 by Makhar Vaziev, who moved to the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. The ballet corps has reportedly raised objections to the appointment of Bigonzetti, an internationally acclaimed contemporary ballet choreographer, in concern he may not stick to the classical repertoire.
Bigonzetti was born in Rome in 1960. His works have been staged by the Ankara State Ballet, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, English National Ballet, Julio Bocca & Ballet Argentino, the New York City Ballet, and the City Ballet of São Paulo, Brazil, among others.
