A wine producer in Tuscany has launched the first certified vegan Chianti: indeed, the wine produced by Fattoria Casabianca, in the Siena area, is said to be vegan because “the grape is traced every step of the way, from our organically farmed vineyards to the bottle,” said Casabianca Manager Alberto Cenni.
Any animal products and derivatives have been eliminated from the field to the cellar, including the label glue and packing process. Fattoria Casabianca produces 400 thousand bottles every year of red, white, and rosé Chianti Colli Senesi using 654 hectares between the Ombrone and Merse rivers. Its entire line beginning with the 2014 harvest will be cruelty-free.
Usually, in a traditional process, grape juice is filtered through the “fining agents”, to remove protein, yeast, cloudiness, “off” flavours and colourings, and other organic particles. But, in order to satisfy the growing number of vegan wine drinkers in major export markets, the Italian producer went vegan, starting selling the wine this spring.
