The Sofia Coppola’s production of Italian Opera “La Traviata” has broken Rome Opera House’s box-office record of any time with a 1.2 million euros ticket sales five days before its debut next Tuesday. While the costs of taking the opera on stage, including costumes designed by Valentino, were just under 1.8 million euros, the presales have almost payed most of them.

The announcement of the involvement of Sofia Coppola in the opera had followed a tough time for the Opera of Rome, which struggled with La Scala and in 2014 suffered a setback after the renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti pulled two productions because of various conflicts. The decision came months after threats of industrial action nearly derailed the opening night of a performance of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, which was conducted by Muti and directed by his daughter, and several other strike threats and protests.
