For the first time in history, the finals of the US Open will have not just one but two Italians to play for the final win.
 
Roberta Vinci, originally from Taranto, Apulia, the world number 43, who is playing her first Grand Slam semi-final, won to Serena Williams with a 2-6 6-4 6-4 win. The American player, 33, had been two wins from completing a clean sweep of all four majors in 2015.
 
Flavia Pennetta, the 26th seed, defeated the Romanian second seed, Simona Halepm in the first semi-final with a 6-1 6-3 win. Also Flavia is originall from Apulia, Brindisi. Saturday will see the first Grand Slam final between two Italian players since the Open era began in 1968.
