Fort Bard is a fortified complex built in the 19th century by the House of Savoy on a rocky prominence above Bard, a town in the Aosta Valley region of northwestern Italy. The fortress has been restored after many years of neglect, indeed in 2006 it reopened to tourists as the Museum of the Alps, it has additional art exhibitions and galleries. In the summer, the main courtyard is used to host musical and theatrical performances.
The narrow passageway between the Dora Baltea and the sheer rock cliffs has always been an obligatory route into Valle d’Aosta. Given its highly strategic position in the control of passageway, the imposing rock spur has been fortified since pre-Roman times.
Bard is a typical borgo born along the Roman consular road which keeps today its medieval layout and the precious 15th and 16th century residential buildings. Art historians have classified approximately 25 archaeological details, including crossed and mullioned bifore, frescoes, and a stone spiral staircase with steps that open out like a fan around the viret central axis.
There is a magical atmosphere of once upon a time as you walk along the only street of the village, an atmosphere that becomes even more evocative with the shows and events that take place at different periods throughout the year. The Borgo has been used for the shooting of the Avengers movie last year.
