A year and a month late, again, earthquakes in Northen Italy. It was felt from Bologna to Florence. Damages at buildings but not serious injuries had been reported. However fear and panic, especially in Emilia Romagna where the wounds caused in May 2012 are still visible and where the shakes killed 25 persons, let people rushing out of houses onto the streets and spending some nights out.
The first quake hit in Lunigiana and Garfagnana area, 2.0 kilometres from the walled city of Fivizzano in the province of Massa and Carrara in Tuscany. Earth clearly trembled in Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Veneto.
The quake lasted 15 seconds with a 5.2-magnitude and struck at a depth of around 5.0 kilometres.
The one in L’Aquila (Abruzzo) in 2009 was 6.3, the one in Emilia Romagna in 2012 was 5.9. For both dramatic and very destructive events, L’Italo Americano and its readers picked up funds to help the victims and the reconstruction.
In Tuscany the first shake was felt on Friday at 12.33 a.m. but were recorded about thirty shakes in the day. The strongest repetition, 4.0 magnitude, was at 14.12 p.m.
Other 12 shakes were recorded in the night, the last one at 7.59 in the morning. The strongest one, recorded by the National Institute of geophysics and volcanology, had a 3.4 magnitudo at 3.56 a.m., with origin at 10.5 km between Massa and Lucca.
Other big shakes were recorded on Sunday. In the afternoon a magnitudo 4.4 was clearly warned by the population between the provinces of Lucca and Massa Carrara, especially in the municipality of Minucciano, Giuncugnano, Casola and Piazza al Serchio. But the shake, at a depth of 9,5 km, was also warned in Milan, Modena and Reggio. Already in the morning, people were surprised by light earthquakes on the beaches of Versilia and Marina di Carrara.
According to the National Institute of geophysics and volcanology, over 570 seismic events have been recorded between Friday and the night between Sunday and Monday.
At least a thousand people slept in cars or in the open air for days and, in Lunigiana and in Garfagnana, mostly struck by the earthquakes, seven people were lightly wounded.
