The only work by street artist Banksy in Italy, located in Naples and titled “Madonna with Gun”, has been saved thanks to a petition launched by Alessandro Bello from the city’s San Giorgio a Cremano district. The only other Banksy work in Naples was painted over by a local grafitti writer five years ago.
Bello collected 16,500 signatures using the online platform Change.org. Bello said in recent days a glass plate was installed over the work to protect it.
“It wasn’t done by the city, like my petition requested, but from what I understand, by an ordinary citizen,” Bello said. “What matters is that now the work is protected, pending an actual restoration that the Inward group has proposed to the city,” he said.
