Held in the luxurious rooms of the Musco Center for the Arts, the Italian Perspective series has established itself as both a beloved tradition at Chapman University in Orange and a key event for celebrating and exploring the wealth of Italian culture. Initiated in response to the local community’s sincere wish to strengthen ties and create opportunities for Italy enthusiasts, the series also aims to examine the many facets of Italy across different areas and disciplines.

As the series evolved, it skillfully integrated a range of interdisciplinary activities, shedding light on Italy’s endless possibilities in arts, sciences, and business. Organized in partnership with Chapman’s distinguished School of Performing Arts, the renowned Schmid College of Science and Technology, and the esteemed Argyros School of Business, along with notable Italian institutions like the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles and the Consulate General of Italy in LA, this series exemplifies the strength of cross-cultural exchange and cooperation.

Raffaella Valentini, the Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles, commented, “Chapman University is an academic center of excellence for the study of Italian language and culture in Orange County. Alongside the Italian Cultural Institute, we are fully committed to backing initiatives like the Italian Perspective series, highlighting the best our country has to offer in various artistic domains and encouraging young generations.”

The Italian Perspective series achieved more than just fostering the study of Italian at Chapman University, it has also been instrumental in establishing the Ferrucci Institute, further enhancing its role in promoting Italian intellectual and cultural richness. “The establishment of the Ferrucci Institute deeply connects with the legacy of migrants, representing the efforts of generations to create a unique place within a new society. It is a reflection of individual determination and a strong commitment to education,” explains Professor Federico Pacchioni, the founding director of the Institute. “This initiative, which led to the founding of the Institute and now drives it towards new frontiers, unites us in celebrating Italian heritage and tradition, while also increasing global awareness and encouraging the pursuit of new knowledge.”

Since 2012, under Professor Federico Pacchioni’s guidance, the Musco Chair has significantly broadened the reach of Italian Studies on campus and within the broader community. The Chapman Italian Studies program became a key player in showcasing Italian culture through various artistic and academic events, drawing the attention of local Italian-Americans and enthusiasts. This collaborative endeavor resulted in the creation of the Italian Studies Council, led by community leader Vicky Carabini, who was later honored by the Italian government for her commitment.

We of L’Italo-Americano had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Federico Pacchioni. Hailing from Emilia-Romagna, Pacchioni graduated from the Istituto Magistrale Immacolata in Cesena in 1998 and completed his higher education at La Sapienza University in Rome and Prescott College in Arizona. He followed a unique academic path focused on developing a pedagogy that is humanistic, intercultural, and experiential. At Chapman University, he teaches interdisciplinary courses within Italian Studies, Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, and the University Honors Program, including several travel courses to Italy.

From 2012 to 2023, he led the Italian Studies program, enhancing its curriculum and programming and contributing to the establishment of new scholarships for studying the Italian language and culture. These efforts culminated in the creation of the Ferrucci Institute for Italian Experience and Research, of which he became the founding director in 2023, the same year he was appointed as a Full Professor.

Professor Pacchioni, how did the project that was to lead to the establishment of the Ferrucci Institute begin?

In 2017, the Italian Studies program launched a series of travel courses in collaboration with Italian academic institutions, providing students with immersive cultural experiences and networking opportunities in Italy. Recognizing the impact of the program, in 2018, the Muscos established a second fund of $500,000 to support student participation in Chapman’s courses in Italy. This ensured access for deserving students and sparked new academic initiatives focused on Italy. Inspired by the Muscos’ philanthropy, President Daniele C. Struppa, an Italian immigrant himself, donated $1 million in 2021 to establish the Bernardino Telesio Professorship in Italian Studies. This endowment, named after the 16th-century philosopher Bernardino Telesio, known for his empirical approach to knowledge, signifies the program’s dedication to thorough and interdisciplinary education beyond conventional limits.

This series of contributions led to the launch of the Ferrucci Institute last year. How did Gabriele Ferrucci, a successful entrepreneur now retired and a respected community leader, become involved?

 Previously made philanthropic efforts caught the attention of Gabriele Ferrucci, who recognized the value of Italy’s intellectual and cultural heritage. The Ferrucci family embraced the vision of founding a new institute at Chapman University with a generous donation of $1.5 million, further solidifying the program’s ambitious mission. The collaborative spirit and interdisciplinary approach inherent to the Italian ethos are now leading the way at the Ferrucci Institute, steering Italian Studies in a novel direction. While Italian language and culture stay at the heart, the Institute’s endeavors exceed disciplinary limits, encouraging groundbreaking academic research.

What has been the Institute’s role so far?

The Ferrucci Institute is becoming a central hub for the entire university. We have a team of professors from various programs and departments who are engaged with Italy—whether they’re teaching in Italy, conducting research about Italy, or simply passionate about Italian culture. They come from a wide array of disciplines across the campus, including art, literature, social sciences, film studies, philosophy, mathematics, environmental sciences, music, and more. The Ferrucci Institute uniquely serves as a natural focal point within the university, acting as a bridge to Italy. There are countless treasures that Italy offers to a university, from historical, artistic, and intellectual perspectives.

What was the focus of the eighth Italian Perspective series event held on April 6, “Song and Culture”? 

We presented a series of original keynote lectures and live performances that provided intellectual insights, cultural depth, and an aesthetic experience—a compelling journey that stimulates both the mind and heart. The presentations looked into the complex evolution of Italy’s singing traditions’ historical origins and their significance, including folk songs, art songs, and opera arias. This event offered a unique opportunity to explore the influence of Italian song culture across different periods, styles, and genres.

Nel corso della sua evoluzione, la serie Italian Perspective ha magistralmente intessuto una serie di attività interdisciplinari, facendo luce sull’infinito potenziale dell’Italia nelle arti, nelle scienze e nel commercio. Organizzata in collaborazione con la Chapman’s distinguished School of Performing Arts, l’illustre Schmid College of Science and Technology e la stimata Argyros School of Business, insieme a prestigiosi enti governativi italiani come l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles e il Consolato Generale d’Italia a L.A., questa serie è una testimonianza del potere dello scambio e della collaborazione interculturale.

Come ha dichiarato Raffaella Valentini, Console Generale d’Italia a Los Angeles, “La Chapman University è un centro di eccellenza accademica per lo studio della lingua e della cultura italiana nella Orange County. Insieme all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, siamo pienamente impegnati a sostenere iniziative come la serie Italian Perspective, portando alla luce il meglio che il nostro Paese rappresenta in vari campi artistici e ispirando le giovani generazioni”.

Un ulteriore risultato ottenuto dalla serie Italian Perspective non è solo legato alla coltivazione degli studi italiani presso la Chapman University, ma è anche quello di avere gettato le basi per la nascita dell’Istituto Ferrucci, consolidando ulteriormente il suo ruolo di promotore della ricchezza intellettuale e culturale italiana. “La nascita dell’Istituto Ferrucci è profondamente radicata nell’eredità dei migranti e simboleggia il culmine degli sforzi di generazioni per ritagliarsi una nicchia distintiva in una nuova società. È una testimonianza della perseveranza individuale e di un forte impegno per l’istruzione” ci spiega il professor Federico Pacchioni, direttore e fondatore dell’Istituto. “Questo movimento, che ha fatto nascere l’Istituto e che ora lo spinge verso nuovi orizzonti, è una forza coesiva che celebra il patrimonio e la tradizione italiana, alimentando al contempo la consapevolezza globale e promuovendo la ricerca di nuove conoscenze”.

Sotto la guida del professor Pacchioni dal 2012, la cattedra Musco è stata determinante per espandere l’impronta degli studi italiani nel campus e nella comunità circostante. Il programma di studi italiani della Chapman è emerso come forza trainante nella promozione della cultura italiana attraverso vari eventi artistici e accademici, attirando l’interesse degli italoamericani locali e degli appassionati. Questo sforzo di collaborazione ha portato alla formazione del Consiglio di studi italiani, presieduto dalla leader della comunità Vicky Carabini, che in seguito ha ricevuto un riconoscimento dal governo italiano per il suo impegno.

Noi de L’Italo-Americano Newspaper abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di parlare con Federico Pacchioni. Originario dell’Emilia-Romagna, si è diplomato all’Istituto Magistrale Immacolata di Cesena nel 1998 e ha completato gli studi universitari a La Sapienza di Roma e al Prescott College, in Arizona, seguendo un percorso accademico unico, incentrato sullo sviluppo di una pedagogia umanistica, interculturale ed esperienziale. Alla Chapman University insegna in corsi interdisciplinari di Italian Studies, nel Dodge College of Film and Media Arts e nell’University Honors Program, compresi diversi corsi di viaggio nella penisola italiana.

Dal 2012 al 2023 ha diretto il programma di studi italiani, ampliando l’offerta curriculare e la programmazione e favorendo la creazione di nuove dotazioni dedicate allo studio della lingua e della cultura italiana. Questi sviluppi hanno portato alla creazione dell’Istituto Ferrucci per l’esperienza e la ricerca italiana, di cui è diventato il direttore fondatore nel 2023, lo stesso anno in cui è stato nominato professore ordinario.

Professor Pacchioni, com’è nato questo progetto che alla fine ha portato al Ferrucci Institute? 

Nel 2017 il programma di studi italiani ha avviato una serie di corsi di viaggio in collaborazione con istituzioni accademiche italiane, offrendo agli studenti esperienze culturali immersive e opportunità di networking in Italia. Riconoscendo l’impatto del programma, nel 2018 i coniugi Musco hanno istituito un secondo fondo di 500.000 dollari per sostenere la partecipazione degli studenti ai corsi della Chapman in Italia, garantendo l’accessibilità agli studenti meritevoli e ispirando nuove iniziative accademiche incentrate sull’Italia. Ispirato dalla filantropia dei Musco, il presidente Daniele C. Struppa, egli stesso immigrato italiano, ha fatto un’importante donazione di 1 milione di dollari nel 2021 per istituire la Bernardino Telesio Professorship in Italian Studies. Questa dotazione onora Bernardino Telesio, un filosofo del XVI secolo famoso per il suo approccio empirico alla conoscenza, e simboleggia l’impegno del programma per una formazione rigorosa e interdisciplinare al di là dei confini tradizionali.

Tutto ciò ha portato al lancio dell’Istituto Ferrucci lo scorso anno. Come è stato coinvolto Gabriele Ferrucci, imprenditore di successo, ora in pensione, e ammirato leader della comunità? 

I precedenti contributi filantropici hanno attirato l’attenzione di Gabriele Ferrucci, che ha riconosciuto l’importanza del patrimonio intellettuale e culturale italiano. La famiglia Ferrucci ha abbracciato la visione di creare un nuovo istituto alla Chapman University con una generosa donazione di 1,5 milioni di dollari, consolidando ulteriormente la missione più ambiziosa del programma. Possiamo sicuramente affermare che lo spirito collaborativo e l’approccio interdisciplinare insiti nell’ethos italiano sono ora in prima linea nell’Istituto Ferrucci, che guida gli studi italiani in una nuova direzione. Mentre la lingua e la cultura italiana rimangono centrali, gli sforzi dell’Istituto trascendono i confini disciplinari, promuovendo ricerche accademiche innovative.

Qual è stato il ruolo dell’Istituto finora?  

L’Istituto Ferrucci sta diventando un’interfaccia per l’intera università; abbiamo il nostro team di professori provenienti da altri programmi e dipartimenti che si interessano all’Italia, insegnano in Italia o fanno ricerca in relazione all’Italia. E provengono praticamente da tutte le aree del campus: arte, letteratura, scienze sociali, studi cinematografici e cinematografia; abbiamo anche professori di filosofia, matematica, scienze ambientali, musica e altre discipline. L’aspetto unico dell’Istituto Ferrucci è che crea un polo naturale all’interno dell’università e funge da collegamento con l’Italia. Ci sono così tanti tesori che l’Italia può dare a un’università, dal punto di vista storico, artistico e intellettuale.

Il 6 aprile si è tenuto l’ottavo appuntamento della serie Italian Perspective, Canzone e cultura. Di cosa si è trattato? 

Abbiamo proposto un programma di conferenze plenarie originali e di esibizioni dal vivo che hanno offerto una visione intellettuale, un’ampiezza culturale e un’esperienza estetica – un viaggio affascinante che stimola la mente e il cuore. Le presentazioni hanno illustrato lo sviluppo intrecciato della genesi storica e del significato delle tradizioni canore italiane, comprese le canzoni popolari, le canzoni d’arte e le arie d’opera. È stata un’occasione unica per conoscere l’influenza della cultura della canzone italiana in vari periodi, stili e generi.
