Since 2012, L’Italo-Americano has been organizing the Annual Golf Tournament, a fundraiser that gathers together players and enthusiast on the golf course of the beautiful Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge.

In the early morning, as soon as they arrived to the Club, the players were welcomed with a complimentary breakfast and a gift bag before being assigned to a foursome and a golf cart. The warm-up started with a putting contest, then the carts marched to the green.

The weather was very nice, sunny and hot, and the players gratefully made use of the cold beverages available at each hole, including Peroni beer. After noon, a light lunch was served on the terrace providing refreshment and rest from the strain of the competition.

All the guests enjoyed a fun and intense morning of golf playing, followed by an exquisite dinner prepared by the Country Club’s chef and accompanied by authentic Italian espresso coffee and gelato thanks to the participation of the sponsors Pasquini and Bulgarini who pleased the guests by bringing their carts to the event.

The Emcee at the dinner was Mr. Rick DePiro, who presented the tournament’s winners – Guy Campochiaro, Larry Deagon, Chris Campochiaro, Cory Reisner – with a bottle of fine wine supplied by D’Aquino Italian Importing Co., Inc.

A raffle and a silent auction rich in tempting prizes were also organized. The items ranged from Italian classes to deli products and even a timeshare, provided by generous donors and sponsors such as Mr. Robert Barbera, Fondazione Italia, Grand Havana Room, Grando Chocolate, Il Fornaio Beverly Hills, Knollwood Country Club, Lingua Viva, Mr. Dick Marconi, Tanino Ristorante, Trident Dive, Ventura Limoncello, and many others. It goes without saying that they all went like hot cakes, while the big raffle price, an espresso machine donated by Pasquini Espresso Co., was won by Mr. Gianfranco Roberto.

In his brief speech, Mr. Robert Barbera wanted to thank all the attendees for participating – some of them like Judge Elect Chris Frisco and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Underhill joined the group just for dinner -, as well as the Roberto family in the persons of Vito, Pasquale, and Gianfranco, for their commitment and contribution to the organization of the annual tournament.

He also introduced the newspaper and its mission, carried out for over a century, to promoting and preserving the Italian language and culture in the United States. As Mr. Barbera underlined, there are more than 90 Italian clubs and association in the Los Angeles area, and the newspaper works with them and for them by offering quality information not only on their social, religious, and cultural activities but also on the life in contemporary Italy. Furthermore, he reminded that through a constant development, aimed at improving and expanding both the service and outreach, subscribers can now enjoy L’Italo-Americano also on their mobile devices.

The cheerful occasion ended around 6 pm. It was a pleasant opportunity to be together and enjoy sports in the open air, while helping a good cause in the interest of the Italian American community. Looking forward to next year’s edition.
