Being deaf is like having a super power. Emilio Insolera, deaf from his birth, was so sure about this concept that he turned it into a feature film, Sign Gene.

Sign Gene is, in fact, the first superhero film featuring deaf mutants with supernatural powers obtained through the use of sign language, and it has been screened for a week, starting last   Friday, April 13th . The World Premiere was held in Milan on September 8th and the film was release in Italian theaters soon after.

The movie was written, produced and directed by Emilio Insolera who also starred as the protagonist, Tom Clerc. “I consider this movie the Black Panther of the deaf community,” Insolera tells us during our meeting in Beverly Hills.

Here’s the plot of Sign Gene, that also starred a long list of authentic deaf actors: a secret agent Tom Clerc, descends from a multi-generational deaf family, among them Laurent Clerc, considered the Father of the Deaf in America as he brought  sign language to the States two centuries ago. Tom is the carrier of SGx29, a powerful mutation known as Sign Gene.

A significant portion of his powers was lost  during a fierce fight, some years earlier,  against his arch enemy, his own deaf brother Jux Clerc, the leader of 1.8.8.0, an evil organization dedicated to exterminating Sign Gene mutants.

Hugh Denison, the head of Q.I.A. (QuinPar Intelligence Agency), an agency affiliated to The Pentagon, composed of hand-selected agents with Sign Gene mutation, sends Tom Clerc and his colleague Ken Wong from New York City to Osaka to investigate various intriguing crime scenes. They end up in a fight with a Japanese gang led by Tatsumi Fuwa . Tom Clerc learns that his powers are not lost forever.

The producer and actor Emilio Insolera is a well-known activist,  deaf since birth, a polyglot who has lived in various continents, from North and South America, to Europe and Asia. He is a Fulbright-Wirth scholar, with a bachelor degree in film and linguistics from Gallaudet University and a master in Science of Communication from University of Rome La Sapienza. Insolera is also one of the authors of the first Italian Sign Language multimedia dictionary.

The cast includes Humberto Insolera, Ben Bahan and it is in English, Japanese and Italian Sign Language, with English subtitles.

“I am Italian, but I was born in Argentina, even though I eventually moved to Italy where I grew up,” Insolera tells us. “I studied in America where there is the only university in the world for deaf people, there is also the largest bookshop in the world dedicated to deafness and that’s where some inspiration came, I thought that place was a bit like in X-Men. All the students were deaf, like a sort of gathering of the deaf community. In college, there were many courses about cinema and it came out films about the deaf  were always dramas. After the master I moved to Japan, where I started writing the screenplay and looking for people to make this film with.”

How did the movie develop from then on?
It was supposed to be just a short, but then the people who worked with me were so enthusiastic, they told me  we should have turned it into a feature film. I thought it was a good opportunity. If it was only a short I would have given less information.

When did you finish shooting the movie?
Last year. I started working on it eight years ago, with various breaks, for personal and financial issues. I wanted an action movie with special effects, and a deaf superhero, something never seen before in films.

How was the casting’s process? Are all the actors deaf?
Yes, they are all deaf or born in families with deaf parents, and they have sign language as their native language. There are no agencies for deaf actors so I had to choose among my network of people in various countries.

What is your character’s goal?
I play Tom Clerc, who comes from a family of deaf people, and he is the descent of Laurent Clerc,  the creator of this superpower. My character has a genetic mutation that he loses after a fight with an enemy. It’s this superpower, which is a genetic mutation, that we call Sign Gene. Tom’s goal is therefore to protect this gene and make sure it persists because there are other people who would like to destroy it.

What are these super powers? 
They are actions that  take place through the use of sign language. I can give you an example: the sign for cigarette, you make it with one hand on your mouth looking like a cigarette, and with the other hand mimicking a lighter when you use it to light a cigarette. With the super power, the sign actually provides a flame so that you are able to light the cigarette in real life. Another example we use a lot in the movie is the gun shaped hand, which manifests the actual capability of shooting bullets. So the bullets shoot out of the hand shape that’s used in sign language for the gun.

What’s special about the film?
The presence of kodas,  children from deaf families that are fluent signers.

Is sign language international?
No, sign language is different from country to country. As with regular languages we have have Italian, English, Spanish and so on,  also in sign language the languages are different, in a different visual way. The movie shows this variety: it is very international, with actors coming from Europe, North America and Asia, especially Japan, so many varieties of sign language are used.

What is the message you want to send with this movie?
Many consider deafness as a disability but we consider ourselves only as foreigners who speak a different language. We want people to get closer to our world so the message of the film is that sign language, which for us is visual, should not be just for the deaf but for everyone, and everyone should learn it, because it makes you more complete in an expressive and social way. It is a step towards our community.

Essere sordi è come avere un super potere. Emilio Insolera, sordo dalla nascita, era così sicuro di questo concetto che lo ha trasformato in un film, Sign Gene.

Sign Gene è in effetti il primo film che parla di supereroi, ovvero mutanti non udenti e con poteri soprannaturali ottenuti grazie all’uso del linguaggio dei segni. Il film è in proiezione nelle sale   americane da venerdì 13 aprile per una settimana, al Laemmle Theater di Beverly Hills. La premiere mondiale si è tenuta a Milano lo scorso 8 settembre, e il film è uscito poco dopo nelle sale italiane.

Il film è stato scritto, prodotto e diretto da Emilio Insolera, che ha anche recitato nel ruolo del protagonista, Tom Clerc. “Considero questo film il Black Panther per la comunità dei non udenti”. Insolera ce lo dice durante il nostro incontro a Beverly Hills.

Questa la trama di Sign Gene, film nel quale hanno recitato attori professionisti non udenti: un agente segreto, Tom Clerc, è sordo e discendente da una famiglia di sordi da generazioni tra i quali c’è anche Laurent Clerc, considerato il padre dei non udenti in America avendo portato il linguaggio dei segni negli Stati Uniti due secoli fa. Tom è portatore di SGx29, una potente mutazione chiamata appunto Sign Gene. Una parte significativa dei suoi poteri viene però persa durante una feroce lotta avvenuta alcuni anni prima contro un suo nemico, il fratello sordo, Jux Clerc, leader di 1.8.8.0, un’organizzazione malvagia dedita a sterminare i mutanti di Sign Gene.

Hugh Denison, il capo della Q.I.A. (QuinPar Intelligence Agency), un’agenzia affiliata al Pentagono composta da agenti selezionati e con la mutazione di Sign Gene, spedisce Tom Clerc e il suo collega Ken Wong da New York a Osaka per indagare su varie scene del crimine. I due finiscono in una rissa con una banda giapponese guidata da Tatsumi Fuwa. Tom Clerc capisce che i suoi poteri non sono persi per sempre.

Il film è stato girato tra Giappone, Stati Uniti e Italia, e ha una trama alla James Bond con un tocco di Grindhouse, e fa diversi riferimenti alla cultura dei non udenti e alla linguistica dei segni.

Il produttore e attore Emilio Insolera, noto attivista, completamente sordo sin dalla nascita, è poliglotta e ha vissuto in vari continenti, dal Nord al Sud America, dall’Europa all’Asia. Studente Fulbright-Wirth, con una laurea in Cinema e Linguistica presso l’Università Gallaudet e un master in Scienze della comunicazione all’Università di Roma La Sapienza, Insolera è anche uno degli autori del primo dizionario multimediale della lingua dei segni italiana.

Il cast include Humberto Insolera, Ben Bahan ed è in lingua dei segni inglese, giapponese, italiana, e con sottotitoli in inglese.

“Io sono italiano, ma sono nato in Argentina, anche se da piccolo mi sono trasferito in Italia dove sono cresciuto”. Ci racconta Insolera. “Ho studiato poi in America dove c’è l’unica università al mondo per i non udenti. C’è anche la più grande biblioteca al mondo dedicata alla sordità ed è lì che mi è arrivata l’ispirazione: ho pensato che quel posto fosse un po’ come in X-Men. Tutti gli studenti erano sordi, una sorta di raduno della comunità dei non udenti. All’interno dell’università c’erano tanti corsi in cui si discuteva di cinema, e i film sui sordi erano sempre drammatici. Subito dopo il master sono partito per il Giappone, dove ho iniziato a scrivere la sceneggiatura e a cercare le persone per fare questo film con me.”

Come si è sviluppato il film da lì in poi?
Doveva essere solo un cortometraggio ma poi le persone che hanno lavorato con me erano così entusiaste che mi hanno detto che avremmo dovuto creare un lungometraggio. Ho pensato che fosse una buona opportunità. Se fosse rimasto solo un corto avrei dato molte meno informazioni.

Quando ha finito di girare il film?  
L’anno scorso. Ho iniziato a lavorarci otto anni fa, con varie pause, per impegni vari e questioni finanziarie. Volevo un film d’azione con effetti speciali, e un supereroe sordo che non c’è mai stato nel cinema.

Come è avvenuto il casting? Gli attori sono tutti non udenti?  
Sì, sono tutti sordi o nati in famiglie di sordi, che hanno come prima lingua la lingua dei segni. Non ci sono agenzie per attori sordi quindi ho dovuto scegliere grazie alla mia rete di conoscenze in vari Paesi.

Qual è l’obiettivo del personaggio?
Interpreto Tom Clerc, che proviene da una famiglia di sordi da generazioni, a partire da Laurent Clerc che è stato il creatore di questo superpotere. Il mio personaggio ha una mutazione genetica che perde in seguito a un combattimento con un nemico. Il superpotere che ha, a che fare con una mutazione genetica ed è quello che chiamiamo Sign Gene. Il suo obiettivo quindi è proteggere questo gene e assicurarsi che persista perché ci sono altre persone che vorrebbero vedere eliminato questo gene.

In cosa consistono questi super poteri?
Sono determinate azioni che si svolgono attraverso l’uso del linguaggio dei segni. Posso farti un esempio: il segno per la sigaretta, lo faresti con una mano sulla bocca che assomiglia a una sigaretta, e con l’altra mano a forma di accendino, e faresti un movimento per accendere la sigaretta. Questo gesto genera invece una fiamma vera in modo che tu possa accendere la sigaretta nella vita reale. L’altra che utilizziamo molto nel film è la forma della mano per la pistola, che manifesta l’effettiva capacità di sparare proiettili. Quindi i proiettili sono sparati dalla mano che è usata nel linguaggio dei segni per indicare la pistola.

Cosa c’è di speciale nel film?
Qualcosa di speciale è che ci sono i kodas, ovvero i bambini udenti delle famiglie non udenti e che sono fluenti nella lingua dei segni.

La lingua dei segni è internazionale?
No, la lingua dei segni è diversa nelle varie nazioni del mondo. Come per la lingua sonora noi abbiamo l’italiano, poi c’è l’inglese, lo spagnolo e così anche nella lingua dei segni le lingue sono diverse, in maniera visuale diversa. Nel film ci sono molti aspetti diversi: è molto internazionale, con attori provenienti da Europa, Nord America e Asia, principalmente Giappone, quindi ci sono diverse lingue dei segni.

Quale è il messaggio che si vuole mandare?  
Molti considerano la sordità una disabilità ma noi ci consideriamo solo come degli stranieri che parlano un’altra lingua. Vogliamo che le persone si avvicinino al nostro mondo quindi il messaggio del film è che la lingua dei segni, che per noi è visuale, non debba essere solo per i sordi ma per tutti, e dovrebbero impararla tutti, perché ti rende più completo dal punto di vista espressivo e sociale. E’ un passo verso la nostra comunità.
