The Italian island, Sardinia, leads the Legambiente Ranking for the cleanest beaches in Italy, according to the 2016 report published by environmental watchdog together with the Touring Club Italia.
Sardinia boasts five of the 19 seaside resorts awarded the prestigious five-sails label for natural beauty, services, and management of the local area, including Domus de Maria, that topped this summer’s ranking. Second place is for Pollica, Salerno in the southern Campania region, and third place to Castiglione della Pescaia in the Tuscan province of Grosseto. Most of the five-sails seaside resorts are located along the Tyrrhenian coast. The ranking also features seven lakeside resorts in northern Italy including Molveno in the autonomous province of Trento.
