It’s not the first time that construction to complete Rome’s subway stops because of some archaeological ruins. For this reason, the Italian Culture minister decided that Rome will have the first “archaeological station” on its metro system following the discovery of a 2nd-century AD Roman barracks to be “integrated” with the new Amba Aradam station on the C line between San Giovanni and the Colosseum. The discovery of the “stunning” Hadrian-era barracks nine metres underground will not delay works or spell higher costs, Prosperetti said.

The barracks, discovered nine meters (about 30 feet) below street level, cover 900 square meters (9600 square feet) and include a long hallway and 39 rooms decorated with black-and-white mosaics on the floors and frescoed walls.
