Polignano a Mare Redux

Did you ever feel “called” to go to or to return somewhere? Like some invisible and irresistible force of gravity was pulling you there? An inexplicable attraction, perhaps? Or perhaps, the enticing photos and a travel blurb that  just struck your fancy?

Well, the first time I saw photos of Polignano a Mare with its stunning whitewashed edifices and the dramatic cliffs and caves sculpted by the extraordinarily blue Adriatic, I was sold! I “knew”, absolutely knew, that I had to go there.

Okay, sometimes our expectations can be a bit high and then there’s this little letdown, a sinking feeling when something has been over hyped, the photos a bit too photo shopped. And, okay, sometimes the newness of the first time is the best and subsequent visits are a bit tarnished…but this has not been the case for me. In fact, each visit to Polignano (and to Puglia, for that matter) has only intensified my affection for this magical place.

My first visit to Polignano a Mare was in the spring of 2014 and I’ve returned twice since. Not only did I absolutely love it but I also find myself in a state of withdrawal until I can return…

Mother Nature has indeed smiled upon Polignano…it is simply stunning. Besides the pure beauty of the place and its breathtaking setting on the Adriatic, I just love this picturesque, friendly and totally unspoiled town.

With its picture perfect balconied side streets, quaint Centro Storico and abundance of inviting shops, cafes and trattorie, and warm friendly locals, you just can’t help but fall in love!  And, of course, there’s Domenico Modugno of “Volare” fame…si, he was born here.

Thanks to the extremely accommodating staff at the local tourism office called “Polignano – Made in Love”, I’ve enjoyed side trips to Castellana Grotte, Castel del Monte and Trani, an unforgettable boat ride to the sea caves with Dorino and Nico, and rickshaw rides through the narrow passageways…But I have to confess that what I’ve enjoyed the most is the genuine warmth and hospitality of everyone I’ve met which makes each visit such a pleasure.

For, truly Polignano exemplifies the sweet life and, for myself, I just can’t get enough!
