Italy celebrates its grandfathers and grandmothers annually on October 2. This holiday was introduced by the government of Italy in 2005.

As Grandparents’ Day is an American tradition, the first official celebration took place in 1978, but, it didn’t become as popular as other family-relating holidays in the world. At the same time many countries adopt special days to celebrate grandparents and their contribution to upbringing of children.

Italy is today to be the first European country to establish Grandparents’ Day at the national level. This event took place in 2005 and, since then Italian grandparents celebrate La Festa dei Nonni.
