The life and the career of Lina Wertmüller come to San Francisco on September 23 thanks to Cinema Italia. The Festival, which had the first 2017’s edition honoring Dino Risi, focuses on the first woman in the world to receive a nomination for the Academy Award as best director.

‘Dietro gli occhiali bianchi’ – Behind the White Glasses, whose author, Valerio Ruiz, is Lina’s assistant director and right-hand man, reveals Lina’s personality while letting the audience participate in her artistic experience. As pointed by Director Valerio Ruiz, “Lina had always been a bit hidden behind the mask of her white glasses, however, since I had the chance to know her world so well at the point, I decided to share my beautiful, human experience and make a docu-film out of it.”

Mr Ruiz met Lina Wertmüller in 2006 during the Culture Management summer school at the Ravello Festival, while she was acting as the artistic director of the Cinema section. The school was founded by Valerio’s university Professor, Domenico De Masi, who was also the President of this amazing event. The Festival started as a tribute to Richard Wagner’s music, however Mr De Masi transformed it in a three months international event, where all the muses of the arts were represented: symphonic and chamber music, theatre, dance, cinema and visual arts.

“I had the privilege to become Lina’s collaborator in the artistic direction of the 2007 Festival edition”, Mr Ruiz added. “During the Festival I talked to Lina many times about my passion for cinema and my will to become a film director. She gave me suggestions and shared more about the movies she had written. She has always believed that the best way to learn how to make movies is through experience (rather than school lessons), nevertheless she gave me the great chance to be part of her small team of assistant directors.”

Valerio, what can you recall about the beginning of your work with Lina?
When I started, I was both happy and nervous: when Lina writes and prepares the movie, she is very calm and sweet. When she is on set, she turns into a strong leader, and she can be rude sometimes. At the very beginning, it was not easy – I was 21 years old – but I really appreciate every moment I could spend on the set with her. It was a rare opportunity to see and learn from a great director’s experience. I will always be grateful to her.

What would you consider the best part of this collaboration?
Lina involved me in many projects. She also allowed me to collaborate on scripts and plays: this is priceless to me. I can’t mention a moment in particular. Lina is a master in writing and directing actors. I can look back at my whole collaboration with her and see the way I’ve improved since the Ravello Festival. I started as assistant director, after few years I could make my first feature documentary and now I feel ready to make a narrative movie. In few words, this describes how intense and positive the collaboration with Lina was.

When did you decide to film the documentary and why?
Lina is a unique artist. I love her movies because they reflect her personality, her joy of life, her social commitment, and her irony. Nobody had ever directed a documentary about Lina’s incredible life and career, so I thought I had to do it.

Which is Lina’s aspect that you liked the most and you want to communicate through this piece of work?
I think it’s her versatile talent and her irony. She made movies, wrote plays, many songs… she can even sing. She is the most ingenious person I have ever met in my life. I tried to convey her vibrant, artistic vitality in my documentary.

Which is Lina’s comment about the documentary you will probably never forget?
She simply said “Good job” after watching the movie and before sending the copy to the Venice Film Festival. She did not interfere with the creative process and her opinion was a concern. It must have been odd – for her – to watch her own life on the screen, and that’s understandable. I have to say, I didn’t follow an historical approach to the narrative, I tried to make a moving portrait of her. That was a risk, but luckily she liked it.

Your documentary will be screened in San Francisco in September. Which reaction do you expect from the audience?
I hope the audience will enjoy and will be amused and moved at the same time. At the New York’s Quad Cinema, the movie had a very warm welcome.

Why do you believe it’s important to kick off the festival with this documentary?
It’s a way to pay tribute to Lina Wertmüller’s entire career and to focus on her unique style and life experience. It’s also a positive experiment in the documentary genre.

Will we have the pleasure to have you in San Francisco for Cinema Italia?
Yes, I will be in San Francisco in September. I’m very pleased that Cinema Italia invited me to present Behind the White Glasses. Furthermore, San Francisco has a special place in my heart because part of my family lives there. I’m so happy to show them my work.

La vita e la carriera di Lina Wertmüller arrivano a San Francisco il 23 settembre grazie a Cinema Italia. Il Festival, che ha avuto la prima edizione del 2017 in onore di Dino Risi, si concentrerà sulla prima donna al mondo a ricevere una nomination dell’Academy Award come miglior regista.

“Dietro gli occhiali bianchi”, il cui autore, Valerio Ruiz, è l’aiuto regista di Lina e sua mano destra, rivela la personalità di Lina, lasciando partecipare il pubblico alla sua esperienza artistica. Come indicato dal regista Valerio Ruiz, “Lina è sempre stata un po’ nascosta dietro la maschera dei suoi occhiali bianchi, tuttavia, visto che ho avuto la possibilità di conoscere il suo mondo così bene, ho deciso di condividere la mia bella esperienza umana e farne un film documentario”.

Ruiz ha incontrato Lina Wertmüller nel 2006 durante la scuola estiva sul Management culturale del Ravello Festival mentre lei era direttore artistico della sezione Cinema. La scuola è stata fondata dal professor universitario di Valerio, Domenico De Masi, che è stato anche il presidente di questo incredibile evento. Il Festival è iniziato come tributo alla musica di Richard Wagner, ma De Masi lo ha trasformato in un evento internazionale di tre mesi, dove sono state rappresentate tutte le muse delle arti: musica sinfonica e musica da camera, teatro, danza, cinema e arti visive.

“Ho avuto il privilegio di diventare collaboratore di Lina nella direzione artistica dell’edizione 2007 del Festival”, ha aggiunto Ruiz. “Durante il Festival ho parlato con Lina molte volte della mia passione per il cinema e della mia volontà di diventare regista. Mi ha dato suggerimenti e ha condiviso molto dei film che aveva scritto. Ha sempre creduto che il modo migliore per imparare a fare i film sia attraverso l’esperienza (piuttosto che le lezioni scolastiche), e mi ha dato la grande possibilità di far parte della sua piccola squadra di assistenti alla regia”.

Valerio, cosa si può ricordare dell’inizio del suo lavoro con Lina?
Quando ho iniziato, ero sia felice che nervoso: quando Lina scrive e prepara un film, è molto calma e dolce. Quando è sul set, si trasforma in un leader forte e può essere a volte scortese. All’inizio non è stato facile – avevo 21 anni – ma do molto valore a molto ogni momento in cui ho potuto trascorrere del tempo con lei. È stata una rara opportunità vedere e imparare dall’esperienza di una grande regista. Le sarò sempre grata.

Quale ritiene essere stata la parte migliore di questa collaborazione?
Lina mi ha coinvolto in molti progetti. Mi ha anche permesso di collaborare a sceneggiature e ruoli: questo per me è stato impagabile. Non posso menzionare un momento in particolare. Lina è una maestra nello scrivere e nel dirigere gli attori. Posso guardare indietro a tutta la mia collaborazione con lei e rivedere il modo in cui sono cambiato fin dal Ravello Festival. Ho iniziato come assistente regista, dopo pochi anni ho potuto fare il mio primo documentario e ora mi sento pronto per fare un film narrativo. In poche parole, questo descrive quanto sia stata intensa e positiva la collaborazione con Lina.

Quando ha deciso di girare il documentario e perché?
Lina è un’artista unica. Amo i suoi film perché riflettono la sua personalità, la sua gioia di vita, il suo impegno sociale e la sua ironia. Nessuno aveva mai diretto un documentario sull’incredibile vita e la carriera di Lina, così ho pensato che dovevo farlo io.

Qual è l’aspetto di Lina che le è piaciuto di più e che desidera comunicare attraverso questo lavoro?
Penso che sia il suo talento versatile e la sua ironia. Ha fatto film, ha scritto sceneggiature, molte canzoni … lei può anche cantare. È la persona più ingegnosa che abbia mai incontrato in vita mia. Ho cercato di trasmettere la sua vibrante vitalità artistica nel mio documentario.

Quale è stato il giudizio di Lina, sul documentario, che probabilmente non dimenticherà mai?
Ha semplicemente detto “buon lavoro” dopo aver visto il film e prima di inviare la copia al Film Festival di Venezia. Non ha interferito con il processo creativo e la sua opinione è stata una preoccupazione. Deve essere stato strano – per lei – guardare la propria vita sullo schermo, e questo è comprensibile. Devo dire che non ho seguito un approccio storico alla narrazione, ho cercato di fare su di lei un ritratto in movimento. Questo è stato un rischio ma fortunatamente le è piaciuto.

Il suo documentario sarà proiettato a San Francisco nel mese di settembre. Quale reazione si aspetta dal pubblico?
Spero che il pubblico possa goderne e ne sia divertito e colpito allo stesso tempo. Al New York’s Quad Cinema, il film ha avuto un caloroso benvenuto.

Perché crede che sia importante aprire il festival con questo documentario?
È un modo per rendere omaggio all’intera carriera di Lina Wertmüller e per concentrarsi sul suo stile unico e sulla sua esperienza di vita. È anche un esperimento positivo nel genere del documentario.

Avremo il piacere di averla a San Francisco per Cinema Italia?
Sì, sarò a San Francisco nel mese di settembre. Sono molto contento che Cinema Italia mi abbia invitato a presentare “Dietro gli occhiali bianchi”. Inoltre, San Francisco ha un posto speciale nel mio cuore perché parte della mia famiglia vive lì. Sono così felice di mostrare loro il mio lavoro.
