As reported by the Italian Press Agency, 62% of Italians decide where to go on holiday looking for historic and artistic treasures as well as cultural events. Another 59% look for the most beautiful landscape and natural environment: that’s what the sixth edition of the report ‘Italians, sustainable tourism and ecotourism’ found out.
Some 22% look for relax in a structured environment, while 19.4% make traditional gastronomy their top priority. In addition, 67% would consider leaving their vehicle at home if they could reach their chosen destination by train and 51% by bus. Some 74% of respondents were familiar with the idea of sustainable tourism, up from 63% in 2011. However, only 40% considered it to be ethically correct, down from 59% in 2011.
Likewise, the percentage of respondents who made choices on the basis of environmental impact also fell to 53% from 56% in 2011. National or regional parks remained the ecotourism destinations of choice, with Calabria’s Sila park, Gran Paradiso stretching across parts of Val d’Aosta and Piemonte, Stelvio spanning Lombardy, Trentino and Alto Adige, Gargano in Puglia, Gran Sasso in Abruzzo and Cinque Terre in Liguria being the most popular.
