Pope Francis will let the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy start in earnest by opening the Holy Door of St Peter’s at 9:30 Italian time on December 8. The pope also wants to open the Holy Door of a Bangui church in the Central African Republic during his visit to Africa later this month, giving an early start to the Holy Year with a gesture of symbolic importance in a country hit by conflict.
Pope Francis encouraged an open-door policy in Catholic churches and institutions and said that the upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy is a chance to “cross the threshold of God’s mercy”. “If the door of God’s mercy is always open, then the doors of our churches, of our parishes, institutions, dioceses have to be open, because that way everyone can bring out the mercy of God,” Pope Francis said.
