The new COM.IT.ES, the groups representing Italian expats all over the world, officially formed a few months ago, opening a new chapter for many cities and areas in the world that will last five years. As their main task, the COM.IT.ES work on identifying social, cultural, and overall needs of the Italian community and bring requests in front of local authorities and institutions.

With up to 18 members, the COM.IT.ES are meant to run initiatives that involve young people and old generations, giving social and educational assistance as well as hosting sports and leisure activities. One of the main focuses of the COM.IT.ES. is related to the Italian language and all programs ensuring its promotion and spreading across communities and generations. Lastly, Italian immigrants should be able to ask their local COM.IT.ES for help and support when in need of assistance and they want to see their rights better represented.

San Francisco shares COM.IT.ES representatives with some other states, among which Washington State, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, and some other small islands. The group got together for a formal presentation to the community on May 1st at the Museo Italo Americano in San Francisco. The date also marked the Festa dei Lavoratori (International Workers’ Day) and the event became a moment to celebrate all Italian workers worldwide. COM.IT.ES San Francisco, with their representatives in the house, shared more about the vision and the goal for the future. President Isabella Weiss Di Valbranca was joined by some other representatives who took the stage to talk about projects and future plans. The COM.IT. ES uses working Committees to deliver on the projects, each one run by a lead and few more members.   

Paola Tonelli, who was elected for the first time in 2021, has a background in Physics, she had a career in the telecommunications industry and held prestigious roles both in corporates and at UC Berkeley. In recent years, Paola has been part of initiatives in the Italian community and organizations like the Leonardo da Vinci Society and the Italian Section Club at Berkeley University. She coordinated the presentation for the COM.IT.ES and shared her first impressions in this role: “I am new to the COM.IT.ES. and very interested in collaboration with Italian American associations to ensure that the “Italian Identities” of creativity, innovation, and traditions are integrated and enhanced by the Bay Area spirit of launching startups without excessive fear of failing.”

The Research and Innovationworking committee will promote, facilitate, and coordinate the activities of the Italian community in areas like academic research, entrepreneurship, and innovation by building a strong collaboration with the Italian Consulate as well as existing Italian and Italian-American organizations.

The goal of the Business and Tourismworking committee is to offer visibility and stimulate local Italian entrepreneurs in industries that best represent Italian excellence, like the so-called agroalimentare (agri-food), tech, and artisanship. As for tourism, the focus will be on promoting the turismo di ritorno, a special initiative of the Italian government aimed at supporting the local economy of less known areas and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

The food industry gets its own working committee called Italian Communities and Traditions, with work to introduce unique Italian products and methodologies. This is extremely important because it can help preserve and spread the knowledge about Italian agricultural traditions, cultivation methods, and special products brought from Italy to the US by old generations of immigrants.

More initiatives are also coming in relation to Government Bodies and Institutions, especially to promote, welcome, and coordinate activities of the Italian community in the area of ​​policies, communication, and exchange between Italian and US institutions. This working committee will be in charge of putting together, reviewing, and recommending policies to facilitate the interaction between local governments and institutions, keeping in mind the priorities of the areas that are represented.

The relationships between the members of the various migratory waves present in the area will be revitalized through the initiatives of the Migration, Diversity and Integrationworking committee. They will do so by documenting the integration processes that have radically changed Italian society through cultural initiatives, film festivals, presentations by artists and writers of the second generation. This also includes a special spot for multiculturalism and traditions and its integration with Italy’s new trends.

The Education working committee will use new and existing tools to promote the Italian language and culture and start collaborations with schools, universities, cultural institutes, and associations. Goals vary from expanding the offer of Italian language courses in the area to

facilitating cultural exchanges between Italian and American schools and universities; organizing cultural events and literary prizes for students of Italian; and promoting summer camps for the study of Italian language, culture, and art.

Lastly, keeping everyone informed will have the Communication working committee busy with the website and social media as main channels for updates and information for the community on Consular Services, cultural and school exchanges, taxes, health, and entrepreneurial issues.

Isabella Weiss Di Valbranca, the new President of the COM.IT.ES San Francisco, is originally from Rome. She has a degree in Common Law and practiced as a lawyer. Isabella is a freelance journalist, worked for Rai International, and got a Master in Business Engineering from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. She has always been active in the Italian community of San Francisco.

Isabella, congrats on becoming the new President. How did this experience start?

Thank you so much! We started in December, after a campaign which saw two groups competing for the elections. When done with elections and ballots, we got together and started working on different projects and ideas. We formed many working Committees to help our community find the right tools to navigate among, sometimes, confusing information, by offering connections and contacts.

We know that San Francisco is the place with the highest percentage of people sending their ballot for the Com.it.es. Why is it important to vote?

We got one of the highest percentages in the US, higher than New York just to mention, and higher than a lot of other big European cities. We acknowledge that it is hard to vote to choose the COM.IT.ES representatives, since people have to request their ballot and the Consulate has to verify that they belong to the AIRE, the register of Italians abroad. That is why a lot of votes are not coming in on time, compared to the number of Italians who are residents. It takes a lot of effort to push people to vote. On the other hand, we got a very high participation from the Northwest area, Portland and Seattle. We have four elected representatives from there. Voting for the COM.IT.ES is important as we are the liaison between the Consular Institutions and the Italian community. The more people are involved, the more we can do for the Community.

What’s coming up for the Com.it.es and how the members will deliver on the programs?

We included the maximum number of non-elected members from local and state-wide Italian-American Associations. They are going to help us reach more and more people and deliver projects, events, and support. Personally, I would like to work on wider communication, reaching out to as many people as possible, organizing events for the community, listening to the most important issues, and trying to include members of the community in our projects.

Do you have any other events soon? Should we expect more events like the one we did on May 1st?

There is going to be an event on May 15th in Portland, where people from the Northwest can meet our representatives, together with the Consul General of San Francisco. Of course, we are going to organize more events where we can get people together, promoting not only the language, the culture, the Made in Italy, craftsmanship, sports, Italian skillsets, success stories of success, but also a strong sense of community and, why not, fun! I nuovi COM.IT.ES, i gruppi che rappresentano gli espatriati italiani nel mondo, si sono ufficialmente formati qualche mese fa, aprendo un nuovo capitolo per molte città e aree del mondo che durerà cinque anni. Come compito principale, i COM.IT.ES lavorano per identificare le necessità sociali, culturali e generali della comunità italiana e portare le richieste alle autorità e alle istituzioni locali.

Con un massimo di 18 membri, i COM.IT.ES sono destinati a gestire iniziative che coinvolgono giovani e anziani, dando assistenza sociale ed educativa, oltre ad ospitare attività sportive e ricreative. Uno degli obiettivi principali dei COM.IT.ES. è legato alla lingua italiana e a tutti i programmi che ne assicurano la promozione e diffusione attraverso le comunità e le generazioni. Infine, gli immigrati italiani dovrebbero essere in grado di chiedere aiuto e supporto al COM.IT.ES locale quando hanno bisogno di assistenza e vogliono vedere i loro diritti meglio rappresentati.

San Francisco condivide i rappresentanti del COM.IT.ES con altri Stati, tra cui Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii e altre piccole isole. Il gruppo si è riunito per una presentazione formale alla comunità il 1° maggio al Museo Italo Americano di San Francisco. La data segnava anche la Festa dei Lavoratori e l’evento è diventato un momento per celebrare tutti i lavoratori italiani nel mondo. COM.IT.ES San Francisco, con i suoi rappresentanti in sede, ha condiviso la visione e l’obiettivo per il futuro. La presidente Isabella Weiss Di Valbranca è stata raggiunta da alcuni altri rappresentanti che sono saliti sul palco per parlare di progetti e piani futuri. Il COM.IT. ES utilizza comitati di lavoro per portare avanti i progetti, ognuno dei quali è gestito da un leader e da pochi altri membri.

Paola Tonelli, che è stata eletta per la prima volta nel 2021, ha un background in Fisica, ha avuto una carriera nell’industria delle telecomunicazioni e ha ricoperto ruoli prestigiosi sia in aziende che alla UC Berkeley. Negli ultimi anni, Paola ha fatto parte di iniziative nella comunità italiana e in organizzazioni come la Leonardo da Vinci Society e il Club della Sezione Italiana all’Università di Berkeley. Ha coordinato la presentazione per il COM.IT.ES e ha condiviso le sue prime impressioni in questo ruolo: “Sono nuova nel COM.IT.ES. e molto interessata alla collaborazione con le associazioni italo-americane per far sì che le “identità italiane” relative a creatività, innovazione e tradizioni siano integrate e valorizzate dallo spirito della Bay Area di lanciare startup senza un’eccessiva paura di fallire”.

Il comitato di lavoro Ricerca e Innovazione promuoverà, faciliterà e coordinerà le attività della comunità italiana in aree come la ricerca accademica, l’imprenditorialità e l’innovazione, costruendo una forte collaborazione con il Consolato italiano e le organizzazioni italiane e italo-americane esistenti.

L’obiettivo del comitato di lavoro Business e Turismo è quello di offrire visibilità e stimolare gli imprenditori italiani locali nei settori che meglio rappresentano l’eccellenza italiana, come l’agroalimentare, la tecnologia e l’artigianato. Per quanto riguarda il turismo, il focus sarà sulla promozione del turismo di ritorno, una speciale iniziativa del governo italiano volta a sostenere l’economia locale delle aree meno conosciute e delle destinazioni lontane dai sentieri battuti.

L’industria alimentare ha un proprio comitato di lavoro chiamato Comunità e Tradizioni Italiane, che lavora per introdurre prodotti e metodologie italiane uniche. Questo è estremamente importante perché può aiutare a preservare e diffondere la conoscenza delle tradizioni agricole italiane, dei metodi di coltivazione e dei prodotti speciali portati dall’Italia negli USA dalle vecchie generazioni di immigrati.

Altre iniziative sono in arrivo anche nei confronti di Enti e Istituzioni governative, soprattutto per promuovere, accogliere e coordinare le attività della comunità italiana nell’ambito delle politiche, della comunicazione e dello scambio tra istituzioni italiane e statunitensi. Questo comitato di lavoro avrà il compito di coordinare, supervisionare e raccomandare le politiche per facilitare l’interazione tra i governi e le istituzioni locali, tenendo presente le priorità delle aree che sono rappresentate.

Le relazioni tra i membri delle varie ondate migratorie presenti nell’area saranno rivitalizzate attraverso le iniziative del comitato di lavoro Migrazione, Diversità e Integrazione. Questo avverrà documentando i processi di integrazione che hanno cambiato radicalmente la società italiana attraverso iniziative culturali, rassegne cinematografiche, presentazioni di artisti e scrittori di seconda generazione. Questo include anche uno spazio speciale per il multiculturalismo e le tradizioni e la sua integrazione con le nuove tendenze dell’Italia.

Il comitato di lavoro Educazione utilizzerà strumenti nuovi ed esistenti per promuovere la lingua e la cultura italiana e avviare collaborazioni con scuole, università, istituti culturali e associazioni. Gli obiettivi variano dall’ampliamento dell’offerta di corsi di lingua italiana sul territorio alla facilitazione degli scambi culturali tra scuole e università italiane e americane; da organizzare eventi culturali e premi letterari per gli studenti di italiano; a promuovere campi estivi per lo studio della lingua, della cultura e dell’arte italiana.

Infine, per tenere tutti informati, il comitato di lavoro sulla Comunicazione sarà impegnato con il sito web e i social media come principali canali di aggiornamento e informazione per la comunità su servizi consolari, scambi culturali e scolastici, tasse, salute e questioni imprenditoriali.

Isabella Weiss Di Valbranca, la nuova presidente del COM.IT.ES San Francisco, è originaria di Roma. È laureata in Legge e ha esercitato la professione di avvocato. Isabella è una giornalista freelance, ha lavorato per Rai International e ha conseguito un Master in Ingegneria Gestionale presso l’Università di Roma Tor Vergata. È sempre stata attiva nella comunità italiana di San Francisco.

Isabella, complimenti per essere diventata la nuova presidente. Come è iniziata questa esperienza?
Grazie mille! Abbiamo iniziato a dicembre, dopo una campagna che ha visto due gruppi in competizione per le elezioni. Finite le elezioni e le votazioni, ci siamo riuniti e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare su diversi progetti e idee. Abbiamo formato molti comitati di lavoro per aiutare la nostra comunità a trovare gli strumenti giusti per navigare tra, informazioni a volte confuse, offrendo connessioni e contatti.

Sappiamo che San Francisco è il luogo con la più alta percentuale di persone che inviano il loro voto per il Com.it.es. Perché è importante votare?
Abbiamo una delle più alte percentuali negli Stati Uniti, più alta di New York, tanto per dire, e più alta di molte altre grandi città europee. Va detto che è difficile votare per scegliere i rappresentanti di COM.IT.ES, perché le persone devono richiedere la scheda e il Consolato deve verificarne l’appartenenza all’AIRE, l’albo degli italiani all’estero. Per questo motivo molti voti non arrivano in tempo, rispetto al numero di italiani residenti. Ci vuole molto impegno per spingere la gente a votare. D’altra parte, abbiamo avuto una partecipazione molto alta dall’area del Nord-ovest, da Portland e Seattle. Abbiamo quattro rappresentanti eletti da lì. Votare per il COM.IT.ES è importante perché siamo il collegamento tra le istituzioni consolari e la comunità italiana. Più persone sono coinvolte, più possiamo fare per la Comunità.

Cosa c’è in arrivo per il Com.it.es e come i membri porteranno avanti i programmi?
Abbiamo incluso il numero massimo di membri non eletti dalle associazioni italo-americane locali e statali. Ci aiuteranno a raggiungere sempre più persone e a realizzare progetti, eventi e supporto. Personalmente, vorrei lavorare su una comunicazione più ampia, raggiungendo più persone possibili, organizzando eventi per la comunità, ascoltando le questioni più importanti e cercando di includere i membri della comunità nei nostri progetti.

Avete altri appuntamenti a breve? Dobbiamo aspettarci altri eventi come quello del 1° maggio?
Ci sarà un evento il 15 maggio a Portland, dove la gente del Nord-ovest potrà incontrare i nostri rappresentanti, insieme al Console Generale di San Francisco. Naturalmente, abbiamo intenzione di organizzare più eventi dove possiamo riunire le persone, promuovendo non solo la lingua, la cultura, il Made in Italy, l’artigianato, lo sport, le competenze italiane, le storie di successo, ma anche un forte senso di comunità e, perché no, di divertimento!
