Columbus Day will not be abolished in in Colorado after legislation was voted down last Monday night.
Rep. Joe Salazar, a Democrat from Thornton who sponsored the bill, originally sought to have Oct. 12 renamed Indigenous People’s Day. He dropped that part of the proposal with an amendment during the committee hearing.
Colorado was the first state to recognize Columbus Day in 1907, which first observed on a national level by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934, before becoming a federal holiday in 1971. “We know Colorado is the birthplace of Columbus Day,” said Rita Martinez of the Pueblo Abolish Columbus Day Committee. “We feel like we have a great responsibility and doing something about it.”
