Legambiente e Touring Club have picked Castiglione della Pescaia as the top destination for 2015. The village lies between the blue Tirreno sea and the Tuscan green hills: it boasts beautiful beaches with pine forests that reach Marina di Grosseto and the Pineta del Tombolo.

For years, this location had the record of the greatest number of visitors in all of the Maremma, thanks to the large number and high quality of the accommodations present, port infrastructures. The walled medieval town, complete with towers, gates and a 15th-century castle, is perched on an outcropping of Monte Petriccio.

Originally, on the east side of the town, there was the Lake Prile, an Etruscan possession before it became the Roman Portus Traianus.  The natural reserve of the Diaccia Botrona is what remains of that area today. It is considered one of the most important areas of wetlands in Italy with a rare ecosystem of international importance.
