Today, I feel like to write about Rome and Italian heritage, but for once – our regular readers may be aware of my penchant for classical history – I won’t delve into the depths and beauties of the Empire, but focus on the Rome of today. At least in part, let us say. Our breathtaking capital has been going through a bit of a rough patch, as many of you have probably learnt, even from the pages of our newspaper, yet her millennial history demonstrates Rome is never really beaten nor conquered and she always, always rises up with pride, more beautiful and relevant than before.
And what goes for Rome, ladies and gentlemen, goes for Italy as a whole: il Bel Paese struggles, the government is weak, TV is awful but Italy remains Italy, idiosyncratic and criticized, but loved and envied like no other place in the world.
Our regular readers know we at L’Italo Americano truly believe one of the reasons our country remains so beautiful, so warm, so welcoming is the profound tie she has managed to maintain with her past, not only historically and artistically, but also in the most humble and common of things. The way her people like to shop in small grocery stores rather than supermarkets, that habit to buy a tray of pasticcini after Sunday mass to bring home, pensioners gathering for coffee every day, at the same bar, to chat about life and current events, their eyes still as bright as they were some fifty or sixty years earlier, when they may have done the same as teenagers.
Italy has art, has nature, has culture, but it also has a heartwarming simplicity, disarming and impossible not to adore once you get to know it. The simplicity of the small gestures and habits we spoke about just now, of course, but also that of the myriad of old, traditional crafts that, quite literally, made the country: an army of tailors, goldsmiths, and rope makers; cheesemongers, fishermen and carpenters; lacemakers, blacksmiths and campanari who, throughout the centuries, built the country stone upon stone with their skills and abilities, making it the box of treasures it is today. And when we consider the way, in the past, painters, sculptors and architects were largely considered “craftsmen” and all started as apprentices in workshops, the importance of this word, craft, in the history and culture of Italy becomes even more essential.

But let us return to Rome, today, to look at it with different eyes. For a moment, let’s put aside her monuments and canonical history, but also the glitz of the Dolce Vita and Via Condotti. We’ll discover the city with a special tour, bringing us into the ateliers and workshops of those craftsmen who keep alive the flame of tradition and heritage in its streets, a piece of unique artwork at a time, with the simplicity and humbleness typical of craftsmen all over the country.

And mind, this isn’t a simple virtual tour we’re all taking together, through a pocketful of words pleasantly placed – or so I hope – onto a white sheet of paper: it’s a real thing. Indeed, people interested in discovering with their own eyes the lives and work of craftsmen and women in the capital’s historical centre have been able to do it, since 2013, thanks to the Botteghiamo initiative. The definition of the project is very simple: it aims to give importance to historical crafts, or antichi mestieri, as we say in Italy, and to tell their story through the discovery of their secrets and curiosities. Down to the knitty-gritty, Botteghiamo is a tour dedicated to visiting traditional workshops located in the historical rioni of Rome: Ponte, Parione, Regola, Borgo, Monti, Trastevere and il Tridente. Your guide will lead you through the history of these areas and tell you about many of their typical crafts and about their development, value and resilience to modern disposable culture. During the walk, you’ll have the opportunity to visit three or four botteghe artigiane, or workshops, where craftsmen will tell you about what they do, how they do it and, well…why they do it.
Because isn’t the essence of it all just in that? In why we do certain things, take certain decisions? And I am ready to bet that many of the talented craftsmen and women of Botteghiamo will probably tell you they were uncontrollably drawn to their craft, as if inspired, nay, called to do it by some inexplicable necessity. A necessity to keep tradition alive, of course, but also to count, to become part of a centuries-old community that transcends time, bringing together within the same, ideal bottega the hearts, bodies and souls of millions artigiani who weaved the fabric of this country through history. Others will speak about their family and how their craft has been defining its very essence for generations: and family is a the core of Italianità, let’s not forget it, and this tells you how incredibly important craftsmanship is not only for the economy and heritage of the country, but for its very social and affective structure.

You’ll start your walk from the Piazza di Pasquino, a location our readers are familiar with, as we dedicate often our pages to the tales of Pasquino, and to his irreverent sense of humor. Well, the choice of this particular spot to begin the Botteghiamo tour is not haphazard: Pasquino was an artisan himself, possibly a barber or a shoemaker, himself a symbol of the world participants are about to enter. You can choose an Italian or English speaking guide, and you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy some delicious traditional food samples during the tour, at one of the botteghe alimentari part of the itinerary. Oggi, mi sento di scrivere su Roma e il patrimonio italiano, ma per una volta – i nostri lettori abituali potrebbero conoscere la mia passione per la storia classica – non voglio addentrarmi nelle profondità e nelle bellezze dell’Impero, ma concentrarmi sulla Roma di oggi. Almeno in parte, diciamo. La nostra meravigliosa capitale sta attraversando un momento difficile, come molti di voi probabilmente sanno, anche dalle pagine del nostro giornale, ma la sua storia millenaria dimostra che Roma non è mai stata battuta, né conquistata, e si è sempre, sempre, rialzata con orgoglio, più bella e migliore di prima.
E quello che succede per Roma, signore e signori, succede per l’Italia nel suo complesso: il Bel Paese fafatica, il governo è debole, la tv è terribile ma l’Italia rimane l’Italia, idiosincratica e criticata, ma amata e invidiata come nessun altro posto al mondo.
I nostri abituali lettori sanno che noi de L’Italo Americano crediamo veramente che una delle ragioni per cui il nostro Paese rimane così bello, così caldo, così accogliente è il legame profondo che è riuscito a mantenere con il suo passato, non solo storico e artistico, ma anche con le cose più umili e comuni. Il modo in cui le persone amano fare compere nei piccoli negozi di alimentari piuttosto che nei supermercati, l’abitudine di comprare un vassoio di pasticcini dopo la messa domenicale per portarle a casa, i pensionati che si ritrovano tutti i giorni per un caffè, nello stesso bar, per parlare della vita e degli eventi giornalieri, i loro occhi ancora brillanti come lo erano una cinquantina o sessantina di anni prima, quando avrebbero potuto fare lo stesso da adolescenti.
L’Italia ha arte, ha natura, ha cultura, ma ha anche una semplicità commovente, disarmante e impossibile da non adorare una volta che la si conosce. La semplicità dei piccoli gesti e delle abitudini di cui abbiamo parlato poco fa, naturalmente, ma anche quella fatta dalla miriade di vecchi mestieri tradizionali che, letteralmente, hanno fatto il Paese: un esercito di sarti, orafi e cordai; venditori di formaggi, pescatori e falegnami; merlettaie, fabbri e campanari che, nel corso dei secoli, hanno costruito il paese pietra su pietra con le loro abilità e capacità, rendendolo lo scrigno dei tesori che è oggi. E quando consideriamo il modo in cui, in passato, pittori, scultori e architetti erano in gran parte considerati “artigiani” e tutti iniziavano come apprendisti nelle botteghe, l’importanza di questa parola, artigianato, nella storia e nella cultura d’Italia, diventa ancora più essenziale.
Ma torniamo a Roma, oggi, per guardarla con occhi diversi. Per un momento, mettiamo da parte i suoi monumenti e la storia canonica, ma anche lo sfarzo della Dolce Vita e di Via Condotti. Scopriremo la città con un tour speciale, che ci porterà negli atelier e nei laboratori di quegli artigiani che mantengono viva la fiamma della tradizione e del patrimonio nelle sue strade, un pezzo alla volta come opere d’arte uniche, con la semplicità e l’umiltà tipiche degli artigiani di tutto il Paese.
E badate, questo che stiamo facendo insieme non è un semplice tour virtuale, attraverso una manciata di parole piacevolmente posizionate – o almeno così spero – su un foglio di carta bianca: è qualcosa di reale. La definizione del progetto è molto semplice: mira a dare importanza all’artigianato storico, o antichi mestieri, come diciamo in Italia, e a raccontare la loro storia attraverso la scoperta dei loro segreti e delle loro curiosità.
Botteghiamo è un tour dedicato alla visita di botteghe tradizionali situate negli storici rioni di Roma: Ponte, Parione, Regola, Borgo, Monti, Trastevere e Tridente. La guida vi porterà attraverso la storia di queste aree e vi parlerà di molti dei loro mestieri tipici e del loro sviluppo, valore e resistenza alla moderna cultura dell’usa e getta. Una necessità che mantiene viva la tradizione, naturalmente, ma che li fa anche far parte di una comunità secolare che trascende il tempo, che riunisce all’interno della stessa, ideale, bottega i cuori, i corpi e le anime di milioni di artigiani che hanno tessuto la trama di questo Paese nel corso della storia. Altri parleranno della loro famiglia e di come il loro mestiere abbia definito la loro vera essenza da generazioni: la famiglia è il cuore dell’italianità, non dimentichiamolo, e questo vi dice quanto l’artigianato sia incredibilmente importante non solo per l’economia e il patrimonio del Paese, ma anche per la sua struttura sociale e affettiva.
Inizierete la passeggiata da Piazza di Pasquino, un luogo con cui i nostri lettori hanno familiarità, dato che dedichiamo spesso le nostre pagine ai racconti di Pasquino e al suo irriverente senso dell’umorismo. Perché c’è di più nell’artigianato che il semplice prodotto finale, anche quando è qualcosa di così squisitamente realizzato da essere un’opera d’arte.
L’artigianato è l’essenza e l’anima del Paese, perché è tradizione e apprendimento, è famiglia e passato, è storia e futuro tutto in una volta.
