The Arena di Verona Opera Festival was established in 1913, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi. The inaugural performance was Verdi’s Aida, chosen for its grandiose and dramatic qualities, which perfectly suited the majestic setting of the ancient Roman amphitheater in Verona.  Indeed, the arena itself is a marvel of Roman engineering, built in the first century AD: originally designed to host gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles, today it serves as a monumental open-air opera house, also in name of its remarkable acoustics and vast seating capacity, which make it an ideal location for large-scale operatic productions.

Over the decades, the festival hosted legendary performers such as Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Renata Tebaldi, and became a symbol of Italian operatic excellence, synonymous with high-quality performances and spectacular productions.

The Festival typically takes place during the summer months, from June to August, as the summer offers ideal weather conditions for outdoor performances. The 2024 Opera Festival will take place from June 7 to September 7, marking its 101st edition, a particularly important one as it comes after last December’s entry of Italian opera in the UNESCO World Heritage. The festival will open with a grand gala on June 7, followed by major productions including Turandot by Puccini (June 8), Aida by Verdi (June 14 and August 10), Carmen by Bizet (July 5 to September 7), La Bohème by Puccini (July 19 and 27), Tosca by Puccini (August 2 to 30), and The Barber of Seville by Rossini (June 21 to September 6)​.  Special performances will also take place including include Roberto Bolle and Friends (July 23-24), Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (August 11), Plácido Domingo Noche Española (August 21), and Carmina Burana (September 1).​  Featuring renowned artists like Anna Netrebko and Plácido Domingo, the festival will bring together, as usual,  operatic excellence with the unique ambiance of the ancient Arena di Verona, attracting global audiences and enriching Verona’s cultural heritage​. 

Il Festival Lirico dell’Arena di Verona è stato istituito nel 1913, per celebrare il centenario della nascita di Giuseppe Verdi. La rappresentazione inaugurale è stata l’Aida di Verdi, scelta per le sue qualità grandiose e drammatiche, che si adattavano perfettamente alla maestosa cornice dell’antico anfiteatro romano di Verona. L’arena stessa, infatti, è una meraviglia dell’ingegneria romana, costruita nel I secolo d.C.: originariamente progettata per ospitare gare di gladiatori e altri spettacoli pubblici, oggi funge da monumentale teatro lirico all’aperto, anche in nome della sua notevole acustica e della vasta capienza di posti a sedere, che lo rendono un luogo ideale per produzioni operistiche su larga scala.

Nel corso dei decenni, il festival ha ospitato artisti leggendari come Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo e Renata Tebaldi, ed è diventato un simbolo dell’eccellenza operistica italiana, sinonimo di spettacoli di alta qualità e produzioni spettacolari.

Il Festival si svolge tipicamente durante i mesi estivi, da giugno ad agosto, poiché l’estate offre condizioni meteorologiche ideali per spettacoli all’aperto. 

Dal 7 giugno al 7 settembre si svolgerà il Festival Lirico 2024, che segna la sua 101esima edizione, particolarmente importante perché segue l’ingresso, lo scorso dicembre, dell’opera italiana nel Patrimonio Mondiale dell’UNESCO. Il festival si aprirà con un gran galà il 7 giugno, seguito da grandi produzioni tra cui Turandot di Puccini (8 giugno), Aida di Verdi (14 giugno e 10 agosto), Carmen di Bizet (dal 5 luglio al 7 settembre), La Bohème di Puccini (19 e 27 luglio), Tosca di Puccini (dal 2 al 30 agosto) e Il Barbiere di Siviglia di Rossini (dal 21 giugno al 6 settembre). Si terranno anche spettacoli speciali, tra cui Roberto Bolle and Friends (23-24 luglio), Nona Sinfonia di Beethoven (11 agosto), Plácido Domingo Noche Española (21 agosto) e Carmina Burana (1 settembre). Con artisti rinomati come Anna Netrebko e Plácido Domingo, il festival riunirà, come di consueto, l’eccellenza operistica con l’atmosfera unica dell’antica Arena di Verona, attirando un pubblico globale e arricchendo il patrimonio culturale di Verona.
