The news hit the Pacific Northwest like a tidal wave: Alaska Airlines is starting nonstop service from Seattle to Rome!  For many Italians and Italian Americans living in the area, it is a dream come true.

Starting next May, travelers headed to Italy will be able to fly direct from Seattle Tacoma International Airport to Fiumicino International Airport outside Rome – the first time that the Emerald City will be connected to the Eternal City. It also marks Alaska Airline’s first stop in Europe. Advance tickets for the new routing, served by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, will go on sale this fall.

The announcement was made in a video on the airlines website by Alaska Airlines CEO Benito (Ben) Minicucci, a first-generation Italian American born in Montreal. Wearing a blue polo shirt with the word Italia on the front, Minicucci starts to make the new route announcement but stops abruptly, asking his audience to hold on a minute. 

He takes out his cellphone and calls his mother and says: Mamma, ho una bella notizia (“I have good news”). He then proceeds to tell his mother in Italian about the new nonstop service to Rome.  His mom, who appears on a split screen, takes over the video from that point, enthusiastically telling viewers a few of the good things to enjoy in Italy – starting with prosecco, followed by pasta.

“Serving Rome nonstop from Seattle is a dream come true,” said Minicucci in a company press release. “As an Italian American whose parents emigrated from Italy, this is a particularly meaningful addition to our network. Our guests have been asking for an easy way to get to Italy for years – and we’re thrilled to provide it.”

Ivan Bassato, chief aviation officer at Aeroporti di Roma, also expressed his delight that Alaska Airlines chose Rome as its first destination in Europe. “For the first time in history, Italy will be directly connected to Seattle, further strengthening ties with the U. S. West Coast and the broader Pacific region.” 

Alaska has already cleared one hurdle, making sure that Fiumicino has enough space to accommodate the new flights. The 787 Dreamliner, to be used on the new route, was part of the $1.9 billion deal when Alaska Airlines acquired Hawaiian Airlines last fall. 

Alaska Airlines officials report that Rome is consistently among the most-requested destination for its customers.  By eliminating the lay-over in either an East coast city or European hub, the nonstop service between Seattle and Rome will be about 10 hours of  flying time, not 13 hours and up.

For the past several months, Minicucci has hinted that Rome might be a new Alaska destination, citing how pleased his family was going to be. Minicucci’s parents emigrated from the Molise region of Italy in the 1950s to escape post-war poverty; his father never went to school. Born in 1966, Minicucci and his brother Pasquale grew up in Quebec speaking three languages: English, French and Italian. He became a U. S. citizen in 2012.

Minicucci was selected president and CEO of Alaska Airlines on March 31, 2021, during the height of the pandemic. Previously, he had served 14 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, then joined Air Canada where he worked on technical operations.  He joined Alaska Airlines in 2004, starting out as staff vice president of maintenance and then rising up the corporate ladder.

As CEO of Alaska Airlines, Minicucci oversees about 33,000 employees and nearly 1,500 daily flights to more than 100 nonstop destinations. Just six months ago, Alaska announced it was adding two new nonstop flights from Seattle to Tokyo-Narita and Seoul, South Korea. 

Currently the new nonstop Seattle-Rome route will be available four days a week. Although specific flight times may change, Alaska is publicizing that the outbound route (Seattle – Rome) will fly Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, leaving at 6 p.m., and arriving in Rome the next afternoon. The inbound route (Rome – Seattle) will leave Fiumicino at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and arrive in Seattle at 6 p.m.

In a Seattle Times article, Alaska’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Harrison said that the airline knew there was great interest in this routing because members of its loyalty program were using miles to book award travel to Italy through Alaska’s partner airlines. According to Harrison, the market was underserved and there is great demand. “After all,” Harrison said, “who doesn’t love Italy?”

L’annuncio è stato fatto in un video sul sito web della compagnia aerea dall’amministratore delegato di Alaska Airlines, Benito (Ben) Minicucci, un italoamericano di prima generazione nato a Montreal. Indossando una polo blu con la scritta “Italia” sul davanti, Minicucci comincia ad annunciare la nuova rotta, ma si interrompe bruscamente, chiedendo al pubblico di attendere un minuto.

Tira fuori il cellulare, chiama la madre e le dice: Mamma, ho una bella notizia. Poi racconta in italiano alla madre del nuovo servizio diretto per Roma. La madre, che appare su uno schermo diviso, riprende il video da quel momento, raccontando con entusiasmo agli spettatori alcune delle cose buone da gustare in Italia, a partire dal prosecco, per poi passare alla pasta.

“Servire Roma senza scalo da Seattle è un sogno che si avvera”, ha dichiarato Minicucci in un comunicato stampa aziendale. “Come italoamericano i cui genitori sono emigrati dall’Italia, questa è un’aggiunta particolarmente significativa alla nostra rete. I nostri ospiti chiedono da anni un modo facile per raggiungere l’Italia e siamo entusiasti di poterlo offrire”.

Alaska Airlines ha già superato un ostacolo, assicurandosi che Fiumicino abbia spazio a sufficienza per ospitare i nuovi voli. Il 787 Dreamliner, che verrà utilizzato sulla nuova rotta, faceva parte dell’accordo da 1,9 miliardi di dollari siglato lo scorso autunno da Alaska Airlines quando ha acquisito Hawaiian Airlines.

I dirigenti di Alaska Airlines riferiscono che Roma è costantemente tra le destinazioni più richieste dai suoi clienti. Eliminando lo scalo in una città della costa orientale o in un hub europeo, il servizio diretto tra Seattle e Roma durerà circa 10 ore di volo, non 13 ore e oltre.

Negli ultimi mesi, Minicucci ha lasciato intendere che Roma potrebbe essere una nuova destinazione per l’Alaska, citando la soddisfazione familiare famiglia. I genitori di Minicucci emigrarono dal Molise negli anni ’50 per sfuggire alla povertà del dopoguerra; suo padre non andò mai a scuola. Minicucci è stato nominato presidente e CEO di Alaska Airlines il 31 marzo 2021, durante il culmine della pandemia. Come CEO di Alaska Airlines, Minicucci supervisiona circa 33.000 dipendenti e quasi 1.500 voli giornalieri verso oltre 100 destinazioni senza scalo. Solo sei mesi fa, Alaska Airlines ha annunciato l’aggiunta di due nuovi voli senza scalo da Seattle a Tokyo-Narita e Seul, in Corea del Sud.

Attualmente, la nuova rotta senza scalo Seattle-Roma sarà disponibile quattro giorni a settimana. Sebbene gli orari dei voli specifici possano variare, Alaska Airlines comunica che la rotta di andata (Seattle-Roma) sarà operativa il lunedì, mercoledì, venerdì e domenica, con partenza alle 18:00 e arrivo a Roma il pomeriggio successivo. La rotta di ritorno (Roma – Seattle) partirà da Fiumicino alle 15:45 di lunedì, martedì, giovedì e sabato e arriverà a Seattle alle 18:00. In un articolo del Seattle Times, Andrew Harrison, Chief Commercial Officer di Alaska Airlines, ha affermato che la compagnia aerea era a conoscenza del grande interesse per questa rotta perché i membri del suo programma fedeltà utilizzavano le miglia per prenotare viaggi premio per l’Italia tramite le compagnie aeree partner di Alaska Airlines. Secondo Harrison, il mercato era sottoservito e la domanda elevata. “Dopotutto”, ha concluso Harrison, “chi non ama l’Italia?”.
