Lake Garda is a stunning destination known for its crystal-clear waters, lovely towns, and breathtaking landscapes. Situated between the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige, it is Italy’s largest lake and attracts visitors from around the world. Its shores are dotted with picturesque villages, vineyards, and olive groves, creating an incredible landscape with the Alps just around the corner.

One of the most beautiful, but perhaps lesser-known, features in this region is the Strada della Forra, a scenic road in the province of Brescia. It connects the village of Pieve di Tremosine, a member of the “Most Beautiful Villages of Italy” club, to the lakeside area of Porto. The nearest major city is Verona, approximately 53 miles to the southeast, making it an accessible day trip for those exploring the Veneto region. Milan, another major city, is about 100 miles to the west, providing an easy connection for international travelers.

La Strada della Forra, also known as SP 38, is among Italy’s most scenic routes and has few rivals around Lake Garda: truly breathtaking, it ascends the mountainside with hairpin bends, offering perpetual views of the lake, so it doesn’t surprise that it was even used as the setting for a high-octane chase scene in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace!

Its history is also quite compelling. Named after the gorge formed by the Brasa stream, the road was the brainchild of Arturo Cozzaglio, a self-taught engineer and hydrologist. His ambitious vision gained the support of two influential figures, Don Giacomo Zanini, the parish priest of Vesio, and Don Michele Miles, a municipal councilor. Together, they persuaded Count Vincenzo Bettoni, a deputy at the time, to champion the project. Bettoni secured the backing of Giuseppe Zanardelli, the head of the government, which led to a law ensuring that the government would finance half of the project, with the remainder funded by the province and municipality.

Construction began in 1908 and took over four years, employing specialized workers, particularly miners from Serle. The road was inaugurated on May 18, 1913, with a grand celebration and a speech by Mayor Domenico Milesi. His words are famously etched in local history and lore: “Today Tremosine celebrates its greatest event. Today it sees its wishes fulfilled, and the isolation that it has been condemned to for so many centuries removed. Tremosine today is united with the civilized world.”

Indeed, the road had a transformative impact on the village as it brought prosperity and tourism to the area. A correspondent from the Frankfurter Zeitung once called it “the most beautiful road in the world,” and its fame soon extended beyond local acclaim.  Its picturesque beauty and challenging curves have made it a favorite for filmmakers and advertisers: besides Quantum of Solace, it has appeared in The International and numerous European car commercials for brands like BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Seat. It has also been the backdrop for music videos and TV programs, making it all the more iconic.

But what makes the Strada della Forra so special is, perhaps, how differently it can be experienced. Driving a car or motorcycle provides a thrilling way to navigate its twists and turns, just as if you were in a movie chase—but please, always respect the speed limit. For a more leisurely adventure, traveling by camper is an option, provided the vehicle height does not exceed ten feet. Keep in mind that, if you travel with your own means of transport, it is best to take your trip when the road operates as a one-way route uphill to avoid congestion.

Alternatively, you can enjoy your journey along the Strada by bus, as there are regular shuttle services connecting Campione to Pieve during summer. If this is your choice, you can get detailed information and schedules from the Pro Loco of Tremosine once you are there or on the Strada’s website. 

But the most intimate, and perhaps charming, way of enjoying the Strada della Forra is by foot: starting from Pieve, hikers can descend the old, steep Porto trail, surrounded by natural and man-made wonders along the way. Be aware that the initial descent is challenging and not for those with vertigo, but the panoramic views and serene beauty of the gorge make it worthwhile. Cycling enthusiasts can also appreciate the road, whether on a traditional bike, mountain bike, or e-bike, with rental and charging stations available in Tremosine sul Garda. It’s quite a climb, but the fresh air and amazing views make it entirely worth it.

There are important updates to keep in mind if you are planning to travel to the area soon. The Strada della Forra is currently closed from the intersection with Gardesana to Km 3 near the Madonnina due to a landslide that took place on December 16, 2023. The road remains open for descent up to Km 3, but visitors should check the official website (www.stradadellaforra.com) for the latest information before planning their trip.

It’s easy to see how the Strada della Forra, through time and thanks to what it meant for locals, became a symbol of human perseverance and constructive and respectful cohabitation with nature. Whether you drive, cycle, walk, or take a scenic bus ride, this road is truly unforgettable.

Il Lago di Garda è una destinazione meravigliosa nota per le sue acque cristalline, le città incantevoli e i paesaggi mozzafiato. Situato tra le regioni Lombardia, Veneto e Trentino-Alto Adige, è il lago più grande d’Italia e attira visitatori da tutto il mondo. Le sue rive sono costellate di villaggi pittoreschi, vigneti e uliveti, creando un paesaggio incredibile con le Alpi proprio dietro l’angolo.

Uno degli aspetti più belli, ma forse meno conosciuti, di questa regione è la Strada della Forra, una strada panoramica della provincia di Brescia. Collega il borgo di Pieve di Tremosine, membro del club “Borghi più belli d’Italia”, alla zona lacustre di Porto. La città principale più vicina è Verona, a circa 53 miglia a sud-est, rendendola una gita di un giorno accessibile per chi esplora la regione del Veneto. Milano, un’altra grande città, si trova a circa 100 miglia a ovest, fornendo un facile collegamento per i viaggiatori internazionali.

La Strada della Forra, conosciuta anche come SP 38, è tra i percorsi più panoramici d’Italia e ha pochi rivali intorno al Lago di Garda: davvero mozzafiato, risale il fianco della montagna con tornanti, offrendo scorci perpetui sul lago, quindi non sorprende che sia stato utilizzato anche come ambientazione per una scena di inseguimento adrenalinico nel film di James Bond Quantum of Solace!

Anche la sua storia è piuttosto avvincente. La strada, che prende il nome dalla gola formata dal torrente Brasa, fu ideata da Arturo Cozzaglio, ingegnere e idrologo autodidatta. La sua ambiziosa visione ottenne il sostegno di due figure influenti, don Giacomo Zanini, parroco di Vesio, e don Michele Miles, consigliere comunale. Insieme convinsero il conte Vincenzo Bettoni, allora deputato, a sostenere il progetto. Bettoni si assicurò l’appoggio di Giuseppe Zanardelli, il capo del governo, che portò ad una legge che garantiva che il governo avrebbe finanziato metà del progetto, mentre il resto sarebbe stato finanziato dalla provincia e dal comune.

La costruzione iniziò nel 1908 e durò più di quattro anni, impiegando maestranze specializzate, in particolare minatori di Serle. La strada fu inaugurata il 18 maggio 1913, con una grande festa e un discorso del sindaco Domenico Milesi. Le sue parole sono impresse nella storia e nelle tradizioni locali: “Oggi Tremosine celebra il suo più grande evento. Oggi vede esauditi i suoi desideri e rimosso l’isolamento a cui è stata condannata per tanti secoli. Tremosine oggi è unita al mondo civilizzato”.

In effetti, la strada ha avuto un impatto trasformativo sul villaggio poiché ha portato prosperità e turismo nella zona. Un corrispondente di Frankfurter Zeitung una volta la definì “la strada più bella del mondo” e la sua fama ben presto andò oltre il plauso locale. La sua bellezza pittoresca e le curve impegnative l’hanno resa una delle preferite da registi e inserzionisti: oltre a Quantum of Solace, è apparsa su The International e in numerosi spot automobilistici europei per marchi come BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari e Seat. Ha fatto anche da sfondo a video musicali e programmi tv, rendendola ancora più iconica.

Ma ciò che rende la Strada della Forra così speciale è, forse, quanto diversamente possa essere vissuta. Guidare un’auto o una motocicletta offre un modo emozionante per affrontare le sue curve e tornanti, proprio come se si fosse in un inseguimento cinematografico, ma per favore, rispettate sempre il limite di velocità. Per un’avventura più piacevole, viaggiare in camper è un’opzione, a condizione che l’altezza del veicolo non superi i tre metri. Tenete presente che, se viaggiate con il vostro mezzo di trasporto, è meglio effettuare il viaggio quando la strada funziona a senso unico in salita per evitare congestioni.

In alternativa, potete godervi il viaggio lungo la strada in autobus, poiché durante l’estate sono attivi servizi navetta regolari che collegano Campione a Pieve. Ma il modo più intimo, e forse affascinante, di godersi la Strada della Forra è a piedi: partendo da Pieve, gli escursionisti possono scendere lungo l’antico e ripido sentiero del Porto, circondati lungo il percorso da meraviglie naturali e artificiali. Si tenga presente che la discesa iniziale è impegnativa per chi soffre di vertigini, ma le viste panoramiche e la serena bellezza della gola valgono la pena. Anche gli appassionati di ciclismo potranno apprezzare la strada, sia in bici tradizionale sia in mountain bike o e-bike, con le stazioni di noleggio e ricarica disponibili a Tremosine sul Garda. È una bella salita, ma l’aria fresca e le viste meravigliose valgono la fatica.

Ci sono aggiornamenti importanti da tenere a mente se avete intenzione di recarvi a breve in zona. La Strada della Forra è attualmente chiusa dall’incrocio con la Gardesana al Km 3 nei pressi della Madonnina a causa di una frana avvenuta il 16 dicembre 2023. La strada rimane aperta alla discesa fino al Km 3, ma si consiglia ai visitatori di verificare il sito ufficiale (www.stradadellaforra.com) per informazioni aggiornate prima di pianificare il viaggio. 

È facile capire come la Strada della Forra, nel tempo e grazie a ciò che ha significato per la gente del posto, sia diventata un simbolo della perseveranza umana e della convivenza costruttiva e rispettosa con la natura. Che guidiate, pedaliate, camminiate o facciate un giro panoramico in autobus, questa strada è davvero indimenticabile.
