Ferragosto is not only the mid-point of summer and a time to enjoy the warm weather; it’s also time to begin to prepare for the cooler days of autumn and the many fall events in the Italian Community. The largest of these events by far is the annual Columbus Day Celebration and Parade, which has been a part of San Francisco’s very identity since it was founded by Nicola Larco over a century and a half ago. As preparations continue for this year’s parade and all the accompanying events, Queen Isabella and her Court are getting ready for their first public appearance at what has come to be known as the “Garbage Dinner.”
The actual name of the event is the “Columbus Day Family Dinner,” but because it is traditionally held at the company hall of the City’s garbage company, it is affectionately come to be known as the Garbage Dinner. Far from a dump, the Recology Company Hall is a pristine, state-of-the-art banquet facility with a full commercial kitchen and comfortable dining room. It is there that this year’s Queen Isabella and her Court will make their appearance on September 7th at a dinner to be held in their honor.
Hosted by Karen Guglielmoni (who not-coincidently is employed by Recology), the dinner is always a family-friendly and comfortable get-together for those who follow the many happenings associated with Columbus Day.
It is also a great opportunity for aspiring Queens and Court members to be introduced to those who organize the annual event
Tickets for the dinner are $40 for adults and $15 for children, and can be purchased by contacting Karen Guglielmoni at 415-587-8282.
