This year, the 2024 Windermere Cup Regatta, a popular Seattle tradition, brought together two rowing powerhouses – the University of Washington and the Italian National Team – to battle it out in a contest with historic roots.

In 1936, during the Olympic Games in Berlin, the junior 8-man rowing team from the University of Washington vied against much more experienced competitors from Italy, Germany and 11 other nations. Against all odds, the scrappy Husky team made Olympic history, bringing home the gold medal in a spectacular upset that stunned the world.  The silver medalists were the Italian National Team, with Germany placing third.

The inspirational story of this underdog team from Seattle came to national attention thanks to Daniel Brown’s award-winning book, The Boys in the Boat, published more than a decade ago. More recently, the blockbuster book was turned into an action-packed film released in December 2023 and produced by actor George Clooney. Even though none of the rowing scenes was filmed in Seattle — movie producers felt the Seattle landscape was too built up and could no longer pass for 1936 – the film was warmly received in the Pacific Northwest.

This year, in a nod to the film, UW invited the Italian National Team (along with the University of Wisconsin) to compete in the 2024 Windermere Cup finals. A huge crowd turned out in early May to see these three top-tier rowing teams battle it out on the Montlake Cut, the easternmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, not far from the UW campus. Local fans were thrilled when the results mirrored the 1936 medal results. UW’s men’s and women’s teams both took home first place, with the Italian National Team coming in second in both races.

The Windermere Cup, an annual rowing event, has been held every year on the first Saturday in May since 1986. It’s held in conjunction with the Seattle Yacht Club’s opening day parade, which signals the start of the boating season in Seattle. 

The main race was originally conceived by John Jacobi, founder of Windermere Real Estate, who thought that an international rowing meet would be a great way to bring the best teams in the world to Seattle and promote the city’s great rowing tradition. Jacobi sweetened the deal by offering to be the title sponsor.

The first Windermere Cup pitted the UW against the Soviets who had just won the 1986 world championship. The Cold War was still underway and race security in Seattle was intense. FBI agents, State Department officials and Seattle police were all involved but the meet went off without a hitch. That first contest created the buzz that the Huskies had hoped for, even though they lost to the Soviets. Since then, UW has hosted more than 15 nations at the Windermere Cup. 

Windermere Real Estate’s current president OB Jacobi, whose father had started the race, was thrilled to include the Italians in this year’s event. “With the recent release of the Boys in the Boat movie, we thought it would be exciting to bring Italy to race and set the stage for a rematch of the 1936 Olympics when the Huskies and Italy fought it out for gold and silver respectively,” he said.  

The Italians are no strangers to Seattle and UW rowing. Giulio Acernese and Matteo Belgeri, both rowers and UW students, won championships. Acernese is a two-time World Rowing Under 23 champion, and Belgeri won the Under 19 championship in 2023.

On the women’s team, Chiara Ondoli played a key role in helping the Huskies win the 2017 national championships and later participated in the 2020 Olympics, which were actually held in summer 2021 because of COVID-19.  Carmela Pappalardo and Valentina Iseppi were on the UW squad when it won the 2019 NCAA grand final. The two elite athletes trained with the Italian National Team hoping to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games. Although Pappalardo did not make the cut, Iseppi did, representing Italy during the games in Tokyo. She placed fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal. 

This year’s match-up was the third time that Italy raced in the Windermere Cup. In 1989, the Italian team won the men’s race and finished third in 2004. The women’s team finished second behind UW in 2004. Italy earned its first Olympic medal in rowing at the 1920 games and has been a strong international competitor ever since.

UW men’s rowing coach Michael Callahan had nothing but praise for the Italian team. “They have a lot of spirit,” he said. “They race really hard. They’re one of the best nations and international Olympic teams out there, so they have one of the best teams top to bottom, juniors all the way to the Olympic team. So we knew it’d be a strong matchup.” 

As an added bonus, six of the actors from The Boys in the Boat attended this year’s Windermere Cup finals, including Luke Slattery, who played coxswain Bobby Moch; Jack Mulhern, who played stroke seat Don Hume; Sam Strike, who played bow seat Roger Morris; and Bruce Herbelin-Earle, who played #6 seat George “Shorty” Hunt. Though most of the men had no rowing experience, all of them received several months of intense coaching with trainers and elite-level rowers to prepare them for their physically demanding roles.

Nel 1936, durante le Olimpiadi di Berlino, la squadra di canottaggio juniores a 8 dell’Università di Washington si confrontò con concorrenti molto più esperti provenienti da Italia, Germania e altre 11 nazioni. Contro ogni previsione, la combattiva squadra degli Husky fece la storia olimpica, portando a casa la medaglia d’oro in una spettacolare gara che sbalordì il mondo. La medaglia d’argento andò alla Nazionale italiana, con la Germania al terzo posto.

La storia stimolante di questa squadra di Seattle, non data per favorita, è arrivata all’attenzione nazionale grazie al libro pluripremiato di Daniel Brown, The Boys in the Boat, pubblicato più di un decennio fa. Più di recente, il libro di successo è stato trasformato in un film ricco di azione uscito nel dicembre 2023 e prodotto dall’attore George Clooney. Una folla enorme si è radunata all’inizio di maggio per vedere queste tre squadre di canottaggio di alto livello sfidarsi sul Montlake Cut, la sezione più orientale del Lake Washington Ship Canal, non lontano dal campus dell’UW. I fan locali si sono entusiasmati  quando i risultati hanno rispecchiato quelli delle medaglie del 1936. Le squadre maschile e femminile dell’UW si sono entrambe aggiudicate il primo posto, con la squadra nazionale italiana arrivata seconda in entrambe le gare. La Windermere Cup, evento annuale di canottaggio, si tiene ogni anno il primo sabato di maggio dal 1986. Si svolge in concomitanza con la sfilata di apertura del Seattle Yacht Club, che segna l’inizio della stagione nautica a Seattle.

La gara principale è stata originariamente concepita da John Jacobi, fondatore di Windermere Real Estate, che pensava che un incontro di canottaggio internazionale sarebbe stato un ottimo modo per portare i migliori team del mondo a Seattle e promuovere la grande tradizione di canottaggio della città. Jacobi ha reso l’evento più allettante offrendosi come sponsor principale.

La prima Windermere Cup mise a confronto l’UW con i sovietici che avevano appena vinto il campionato mondiale del 1986. La Guerra Fredda era ancora in corso e la sicurezza della gara a Seattle fu intensa. Agenti dell’FBI, funzionari del Dipartimento di Stato e la polizia di Seattle vennero tutti coinvolti, ma l’incontro si svolse senza intoppi. Quella prima gara creò quel fermento auspicato dagli Huskies, anche se persero contro i sovietici. Da allora, l’UW ha ospitato più di 15 nazioni alla Windermere Cup. 

L’attuale presidente di Windermere Real Estate, OB Jacobi, il cui padre aveva dato inizio alla gara, è stato entusiasta di includere gli italiani nell’evento di quest’anno. “Con la recente uscita del film Boys in the Boat, abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato emozionante portare l’Italia a gareggiare qui e a preparare il terreno per una rivincita delle Olimpiadi del 1936, quando gli Huskies e l’Italia si contesero rispettivamente l’oro e l’argento”, ha affermato.

Gli italiani non sono estranei al canottaggio di Seattle e UW. Giulio Acernese e Matteo Belgeri, entrambi vogatori e studenti UW, hanno vinto i campionati. Acernese è due volte campione del mondo di canottaggio Under 23 e Belgeri ha vinto il campionato Under 19 nel 2023.

Nella squadra femminile, Chiara Ondoli ha svolto un ruolo chiave nell’aiutare gli Huskies a vincere i campionati nazionali del 2017 e in seguito ha partecipato alle Olimpiadi del 2020, che si sono in realtà tenute nell’estate del 2021 a causa del COVID-19. Carmela Pappalardo e Valentina Iseppi erano nella squadra UW che ha vinto la finale NCAA del 2019. Le due atlete d’élite si sono allenate con la squadra nazionale italiana sperando di competere alle Olimpiadi del 2020. Sebbene Pappalardo non ce l’abbia fatta, Iseppi ci riuscì, rappresentando l’Italia durante i giochi di Tokyo. Si classificò quarta, mancando di poco una medaglia.

L’incontro di quest’anno è stata la terza volta che l’Italia ha gareggiato nella Windermere Cup. Nel 1989, la squadra italiana ha vinto la gara maschile classificandosi terza nel 2004. La squadra femminile è arrivata seconda dietro UW nel 2004. L’Italia ha vinto la sua prima medaglia olimpica nel canottaggio ai Giochi del 1920 e da allora è stata una forte concorrente internazionale.

L’allenatore di canottaggio maschile dell’UW Michael Callahan ha avuto solo elogi per la squadra italiana. “Hanno molto spirito agosnistico”, ha detto. “Gareggiano davvero duramente. Sono una delle migliori nazioni e squadre olimpiche internazionali in circolazione. Hanno una delle migliori squadre, dagli juniores fino alla squadra olimpica. Quindi sapevamo che sarebbe stato un abbinamento forte”. Come ulteriore bonus, sei degli attori di The Boys in the Boat hanno partecipato alle finali della Windermere Cup di quest’anno, tra cui Luke Slattery, che ha interpretato il timoniere Bobby Moch; Jack Mulhern, che ha interpretato il sedile di bracciata Don Hume; Sam Strike, che ha interpretato il sedile di prua Roger Morris; e Bruce Herbelin-Earle, che ha interpretato il sedile n. 6 George “Shorty” Hunt. Sebbene la maggior parte degli attori non avesse esperienza di canottaggio, tutti hanno ricevuto diversi mesi di intenso allenamento con allenatori e vogatori d’élite che li hanno preparati a ruoli fisicamente impegnativi.
