The lighthouse in Santa Maria di Leuca
The lighthouse in Santa Maria di Leuca

Sitting where the Ionian meets the Adriatic, Santa Maria di Leuca, in the region of Apulia, is home to Ital’s second most important lighthouse after the one in Genoa. Located 300 feet above sea level and more than 150 feet tall, the lighthouse was built in 1864 and was lit for the first time on September 6th, 1866. Its lantern has a diameter of almost 10 feet and it can be seen up to 24 nautical miles from the coast.

Next to the lighthouse, the large Sanctuary De Finibus Terrae (literally “End of the land”) was built to commemorate the passage of Saint Peter and is devoted to Saint Mary, and is connected to the port below through a steep 284-step staircase.
