This historic day honors the nation’s democratic values and unity, representing a fundamental part of Italy’s historical memory. It commemorates the courage of those who defended the country and contributed to the creation of a free, democratic Italy based on the values of dignity, justice, and solidarity. This year, the celebration took place at Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank, California. The Italian Consul in Los Angeles, Raffaella Valentini, delivered an inspiring speech during the event, emphasizing the cultural and economic ties between Italy and the United States and the innovative spirit shared by both nations.

Valentini acknowledged the symbolic significance of holding the celebration at Warner Bros. Studios, a place where dreams have been crafted for the past 80 years. Iconic movies and series like Casablanca, Batman, Friends, Ghostbusters, ER, and The Big Bang Theory have been created here. This location was chosen to invite attendees to imagine and dream of an Italy that is both extraordinary and unique, rooted in history and tradition but also modern and innovative. Warner Bros. Studios is not only a symbol of Hollywood’s golden age but also an emblem of continuous innovation in the film industry. It pioneered sound and color in movies, paralleling Italy’s own journey of blending deep historical roots with modern advancements.

Valentini’s speech highlighted the innovative spirit of both Warner Bros. and Italy, drawing a parallel between the two as creators of dreams and pioneers in their respective fields. She highlighted Italy’s pioneering achievements in research, the space economy, sustainable mobility, and advanced machinery. Italians, especially those in the Los Angeles area, are seen as aerospace engineers, renewable energy manufacturers, PR geniuses, engineers, designers, musicians, researchers, creators, brilliant managers, and amazing innovators. Valentini expressed gratitude to all the participants for their contributions, dedication, and passion; she thanked the staff of the Consulate General of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Trade Agency, the Italian American Chamber of Commerce, the Italian National Tourist Board, and the honorary consuls in San Diego, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Each of these entities plays a crucial role in fostering and maintaining the vibrant relationship between Italy and the United States.

The economic relationship between Italy and Los Angeles was another focal point of Valentini’s speech: trade between the two regions has surpassed $4 billion, with a trade surplus for Italy of more than $3 billion. This underscores the strong demand for Italian goods and services in Southern California. Italy is the fifth-largest exporter in the world and leads the EU in waste recycling and the number of companies in machinery and equipment.

The Consulate General and the Italian institutions in Los Angeles, known as Sistema Italia, are committed to supporting and enhancing economic, cultural, political, and academic ties in the region. These institutions work tirelessly to promote Italian culture, facilitate trade, and provide essential consular services to Italians living abroad. They serve as a bridge, connecting Italian heritage and innovation with American dynamism and opportunities.

Another key point in Valentini’s speech was the upcoming transfer of the Olympic flag to Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Olympics. This event symbolizes Los Angeles’ unique status and its vibrant future. Los Angeles will be the only city to have hosted the Summer Olympics three times, with a series of major sporting events leading up to 2028, including the US Open Golf Championship in 2025, the All-Star Basketball Championship, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the Super Bowl in 2027. These events will place Los Angeles at the center of the global sports stage, bringing together athletes and fans from around the world. The Olympics, in particular, will not only be a celebration of sports but also a symbol of the city’s ability to innovate and host large-scale international events, which aligns perfectly with the theme of innovation and excellence that ran through Valentini’s speech.

The Consul General also mentioned that, in 30 days, Los Angeles will welcome the Amerigo Vespucci ship for the first time. The Amerigo Vespucci, often referred to as “the most beautiful ship in the world, “serves as a training vessel for the Italian Navy, and its visit to Los Angeles will be a significant cultural and diplomatic event, symbolizing Italy’s rich maritime heritage and its commitment to fostering international relations.

Alongside the Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian aerial display team, the Frecce Tricolori, will perform. Known for their precision and thrilling maneuvers, the Frecce Tricolori represent the pinnacle of Italian aviation skill and tradition. Their performance will be a highlight of the celebrations, showcasing Italian excellence and captivating audiences with their aerial artistry. Furthermore, the construction of the first Villaggio Italia in the world was announced: this initiative aims to create a cultural and economic hub to support Italian innovation and heritage in Los Angeles. Villaggio Italia will serve as a center for Italian businesses, cultural activities, and community events, strengthening the ties between Italy and the local community. It will be a place where Italian traditions meet American innovation, creating opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange.

Questo giorno storico onora i valori democratici e l’unità della nazione, rappresentando una parte fondamentale della memoria storica italiana. La Festa della Repubblica ricorda il coraggio di coloro che hanno difeso il paese e contribuito alla creazione di un’Italia libera e democratica, basata sui principi della dignità, della giustizia e della solidarietà. La celebrazione di quest’anno si è tenuta presso il Warner Brothers Studio di Burbank, in California.
