With its history, culture, and culinary delights, Italy knows how to embrace the magic of Christmas like few other places in the world and here, just like everywhere else in the world, the holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. The entire country comes alive with festive lights, bustling markets, and the sweet aroma of panettone and biscotti filling the air. 

Yet, if we were to ask which region of Italy truly embodies the spirit of Christmas, it’d be a challenge to pinpoint a definitive answer.

However, the people at Musement, a platform for booking travel experiences and activities, set out on a quest to decipher where Italy’s heart beats the strongest during Christmastime; they delved into the data, analyzing Google search volumes for ten Christmas-related terms across all Italian regions; the terms included everything from albero di Natale (Christmas tree) to regali di Natale (Christmas gifts), all the way to biscotti di Natale (Christmas cookies), decorazioni di Natale (Christmas ornaments) and film di Natale (Christmas movies). 

Musement’s methodology was meticulous: they calculated the average monthly search volume for these terms in October, November, and December of 2022. To make the results equitable, they divided the average monthly searches by the population of each region and then standardized the data. Each region was assigned a score ranging from 0 to 100 for each search term, providing a comprehensive view of Italy’s Christmas enthusiasm.

So, let’s see which regions in Italy are the most “in love” with the season, with the help of the people at The Wom Travel, who have recently published an interesting article about this very special list, with a lot of festive information about each region. 

1. Lombardy (100/100)

Lombardy, Italy’s northern powerhouse, takes the crown with a perfect score of 100 in Musement’s Christmas spirit ranking. The region’s capital, Milan, transforms into a winter wonderland, adorned with an awe-inspiring Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo and beautiful lights along the Navigli. In Cernobbio, on the shores of Lake Como, La città dei Balocchi reaches this year its 30th edition: here you can find a Christmas market, an ice skating rink, and a plethora of events to enjoy. 

Lombardy also boasts some of Italy’s most beautiful Christmas markets, including Livigno and, of course, Milan’s Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair, which starts on the 7th of December, the day of Saint Ambrose. With its charming lake town and crowned by the Alps, the Christmas spirit finds in Lombardy a natural habitat to develop and embrace every visitor with the essence of the season. 

2. Lazio (77.2/100)

In second place, with a score of 77.2, is Lazio, home to the Eternal City, Rome. The capital dazzles with its Christmas decorations, featuring iconic trees in Piazza Venezia, Trinità de’ Monti, Piazza San Pietro, and a myriad of charming mercatini. Lazio’s charm extends beyond Rome: we just need to think about Greccio, the beautiful hamlet where the first Presepe, ideated by Saint Francis of Assisi, was prepared. 

3. Campania (47.9/100)

Campania secures third place with a score of 47.9, thanks to Naples and its cherished nativity traditions: the famous presepe (nativity scene) tradition thrives in Naples, particularly along Via San Gregorio Armeno, where traditional Neapolitan presepe statuettes are sold: here artists and craftsmen create some of the most beautiful – and curious – presepe decorations you can imagine: this year’s trendiest pieces are Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Sanremo winner Marco Mengoni, and tennis star Jannik Sinner.

4. Abruzzo (38.1/100)

Abruzzo, with a score of 38.1, envelops visitors in a unique Christmas atmosphere. Its illuminated villages, living nativity scenes, and picturesque historic centers truly create a winter wonderland. If you are around, The Wom suggests, you should hop on the scenic historic train departing from Sulmona, which offers a delightful way to explore the region’s Christmas markets. Abruzzo is also the native land of zampogne, Italy’s own bagpipes, which are a key element of local Christmases. 

5. Puglia (38.0/100)

Puglia rounds out the top five with a score of 38.0. The region undergoes a magical transformation in December, with some famous locations like Alberobello becoming even more charming thanks to luminarie and decorations. But we shouldn’t forget Apulians, and Baresi in particular, begin celebrating on the 6th of December, the day dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of Bari, and the real figure behind Santa. 

6. Veneto (33.4/100)

Veneto embraces Christmas with a score of 33.4. The Venetian Christmas experience offers a blend of tradition and charm: the region’s markets, lights, and festive atmosphere make it a delightful destination during the season.

7. Tuscany (31.7/100)

Tuscany earns a score of 31.7, thanks to its elegant and history-drenched Christmas atmosphere. The region’s cities and towns enchant visitors with their decorations, markets, and festive events, all the more charming in the unique medieval surroundings of this incredibly beautiful region. 

8. Emilia-Romagna (28.4/100)

Emilia-Romagna, with a score of 28.4, showcases its Christmas spirit with flair. The region’s cities come alive with festivities, offering a delightful blend of tradition and modern celebration. But perhaps, what people especially enjoy here is good food: prepare to feast on cappelletti and tortellini, cotechino and zampone, all washed down with some of the best wine Italy has to offer, from Lambrusco to lesser-known but equally pleasant Albana di Romagna. 

With a score of 28.2, Marche shows to have, too, a penchant for Christmas magic. This little-known yet beautiful region of central Italy is known for its nativity scenes and also for its pifferai, traditional Italian pipers who play festive tunes on bagpipes and other wind instruments. Their music fills the streets and adds to the joyful atmosphere of the holiday season.

10. Piemonte (26.7/100)

Piemonte completes the top ten with a score of 26.7. The region’s Christmas markets and festivities captivate visitors, making it a delightful destination: here, Christmas is a wholesome affair, tied to the traditionally rural culture of the region. 

While the above regions dominate the Musement’s Christmas spirit ranking, the people at The Wom rightly write that, when it comes to Christmas in Italy, it’s worth mentioning Trentino-Alto Adige. The region showed notable enthusiasm, particularly in searches related to biscotti di Natale (Christmas cookies) and mercatini di Natale (Christmas markets). That doesn’t come as a surprise, when you think the region is renowned for both: lebkuchen, zimtsterne, and vanillekipferl are delicious cookies of German origin, commonly made this time of the year in many Trentino-Alto Adige homes, and the Christmas markets in Bolzano and Trento are, perhaps, the most characteristic in the country.  

From the snowy north to the sunny south, it is clear that the spirit of Christmas knows no boundaries. Every region in Italy offers unique experiences able to make us feel happier, more relaxed, and ready, even if just for a few days, to set aside worries and responsibilities to enjoy some festive cheer!

Con la sua storia, cultura e le sue delizie culinarie, l’Italia sa abbracciare la magia del Natale come pochi altri posti al mondo e qui, proprio come ovunque nel mondo, le festività natalizie sono un momento di gioia, festa e tradizioni che sono state tramandate di generazione in generazione. L’intero Paese si anima con luci festive, mercati vivaci e il dolce aroma di panettoni e biscotti che riempie l’aria.

Eppure, se dovessimo chiederci quale regione d’Italia incarna veramente lo spirito del Natale, sarebbe difficile individuare una risposta definitiva.

Tuttavia, Musement, piattaforma per la prenotazione di esperienze e attività di viaggio, si è lanciata nella ricerca per capire dove il cuore dell’Italia batte più forte durante il periodo natalizio. Hanno approfondito i dati, analizzando i volumi di ricerca di Google per dieci termini legati al Natale in tutte le regioni italiane; i termini includevano di tutto, dall’albero di Natale ai regali di Natale fino ai biscotti di Natale, alle decorazioni di Natale e ai film di Natale.

La metodologia di Musement è stata meticolosa: hanno calcolato il volume medio di ricerca mensile per questi termini nei mesi di ottobre, novembre e dicembre del 2022. Per rendere equi i risultati, hanno diviso la media delle ricerche mensili per la popolazione di ciascuna regione e poi hanno standardizzato i dati. Ad ogni regione è stato assegnato un punteggio da 0 a 100 per ciascun termine di ricerca, fornendo un quadro completo dell’entusiasmo natalizio italiano.

Vediamo allora quali sono le regioni d’Italia più “innamorate” della stagione, con l’aiuto di The Wom Travel, che ha recentemente pubblicato un interessante articolo su questa specialissima lista, con tante informazioni festive su ciascuna regione.

1. Lombardia (100/100)

La Lombardia, potenza settentrionale d’Italia, conquista la corona con il punteggio pieno di 100 su 100 nella classifica dello spirito natalizio di Musement. Il capoluogo della regione, Milano, si trasforma in un paese delle meraviglie invernale, addobbato con un maestoso albero di Natale in Piazza Duomo e splendide luci lungo i Navigli. A Cernobbio, sulle sponde del Lago di Como, La città dei Balocchi giunge quest’anno alla sua 30esima edizione: qui troverete un mercatino di Natale, una pista di pattinaggio sul ghiaccio e tanti eventi tutti da vivere.

La Lombardia vanta anche alcuni dei mercatini di Natale più belli d’Italia, tra cui Livigno e, ovviamente, la fiera Oh Bej! Oh Bej! di Milano che inizia il 7 dicembre, giorno di Sant’Ambrogio. Con l’affascinante cittadina lacustre incoronata dalle Alpi, lo spirito natalizio trova in Lombardia un habitat naturale per svilupparsi e abbracciare ogni visitatore con l’essenza della stagione.

2. Lazio (77,2/100)

Al secondo posto, con un punteggio di 77,2, c’è il Lazio, sede della Città Eterna, Roma. La capitale abbaglia con le sue decorazioni natalizie, con gli alberi iconici in Piazza Venezia, Trinità de’ Monti, Piazza San Pietro e una miriade di affascinanti mercatini. Il fascino del Lazio si estende oltre Roma: basti pensare a Greccio, il bellissimo borgo dove venne preparato il primo Presepe, ideato da San Francesco d’Assisi.

3. Campania (47,9/100)

Al terzo posto si piazza la Campania con un punteggio di 47,9, grazie a Napoli e alle sue apprezzate tradizioni presepiali: a Napoli prospera la famosa tradizione del presepe, in particolare lungo Via San Gregorio Armeno, dove si vendono le tradizionali statuine del presepe napoletano: qui artisti e artigiani creano alcune delle decorazioni presepiali più belle – e curiose – che si possano immaginare: i pezzi più trendy di quest’anno sono il Primo Ministro Giorgia Meloni, il vincitore di Sanremo Marco Mengoni e la stella del tennis Jannik Sinner.

4. Abruzzo (38,1/100)

L’Abruzzo, con un punteggio di 38,1, avvolge i visitatori in un’atmosfera natalizia unica. I borghi illuminati, i presepi viventi e i pittoreschi centri storici creano davvero un paese delle meraviglie d’inverno. Se siete da queste parti, suggerisce The Wom, dovreste salire sul panoramico treno storico in partenza da Sulmona, che offre un modo delizioso per esplorare i mercatini di Natale della regione. L’Abruzzo è anche la terra natale delle zampogne, le cornamuse italiane, che sono un elemento chiave del Natale.

5. Puglia (38,0/100)

Chiude la top five la Puglia, con il punteggio di 38,0. La regione subisce una magica trasformazione a dicembre, con alcune località famose come Alberobello che diventano ancora più affascinanti grazie a luminarie e decorazioni. Ma non dimentichiamo che i pugliesi, e i baresi in particolare, iniziano a festeggiare il 6 dicembre, giorno dedicato a San Nicola di Myra, patrono di Bari e persona a cui si ispira Babbo Natale.

6. Veneto (33,4/100)

Il Veneto abbraccia il Natale con il punteggio di 33,4. L’esperienza natalizia veneziana offre un mix di tradizione e fascino: i mercatini, le luci e l’atmosfera festosa della regione la rendono una destinazione deliziosa durante la stagione.

7. Toscana (31,7/100)

La Toscana ottiene un punteggio di 31,7, grazie alla sua atmosfera natalizia elegante e ricca di storia. Le città e i paesi della regione incantano i visitatori con le loro decorazioni, i mercatini e gli eventi festivi, tanto più affascinanti nell’ambiente medievale unico di questa regione incredibilmente bella.

8. Emilia-Romagna (28,4/100)

L’Emilia-Romagna, con un punteggio di 28,4, mette in mostra il suo spirito natalizio con stile. Le città della regione si animano con le feste, offrendo una deliziosa miscela di tradizione e celebrazione moderna. Ma forse, ciò che qui piace particolarmente, è il buon cibo: preparatevi a banchettare con cappelletti e tortellini, cotechino e zampone, il tutto innaffiato con alcuni dei migliori vini che l’Italia ha da offrire, dal Lambrusco alla meno conosciuta ma altrettanto piacevole Albana di Romagna. 

9. Marche (28,2/100)

Con un punteggio di 28,2 anche le Marche dimostrano di avere un debole per la magia del Natale. Questa regione poco conosciuta ma bellissima dell’Italia centrale è nota per i suoi presepi e anche per i suoi pifferai, i tradizionali zampognari italiani che suonano melodie festive con cornamuse e altri strumenti a fiato. La loro musica riempie le strade e contribuisce a creare un’atmosfera gioiosa delle festività natalizie.

10. Piemonte (26,7/100)

Chiude la top ten il Piemonte con il punteggio di 26,7. I mercatini e le festività natalizie della regione affascinano i visitatori, rendendola una meta deliziosa: qui il Natale è una cosa sana, legata alla cultura tradizionalmente rurale della regione.

Mentre le regioni sopra citate dominano la classifica dello spirito natalizio stilata da Musement, The Wom scrive giustamente che, quando si parla di Natale in Italia, vale la pena menzionare il Trentino-Alto Adige. La regione ha mostrato notevole entusiasmo, in particolare nelle ricerche relative ai biscotti di Natale e ai mercatini di Natale. Ciò non sorprende, se si pensa che la regione è rinomata per entrambi: lebkuchen, zimtsterne e vanillekipferl sono i deliziosi biscotti di origine tedesca, comunemente preparati in questo periodo dell’anno in molte case del Trentino-Alto Adige, e i mercatini di Natale di Bolzano e Trento sono, forse, i più caratteristici del Paese.

Dal nord innevato al sud soleggiato, lo spirito del Natale non conosce confini. Ogni regione d’Italia offre esperienze uniche capaci di farci sentire più felici, più rilassati e pronti, anche se solo per pochi giorni, a mettere da parte preoccupazioni e responsabilità per goderci un po’ di allegria festosa!
