La Quintana di Ascoli Piceno is a historical reenactment event that takes place in the city of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region of Italy. The event is named after the Quintana, an ancient Roman equestrian game, and its first attestation dates to 1377. The modern event is a jousting tournament held once at the beginning of July and then on the first Sunday of August each year. 

La Quintana is a competition between the six sestieri (districts) of the city, each represented by a knight. The knights, riding on horseback, must hit a target held by a statue of a Saracen warrior with a lance. The knight who hits the target with the greatest accuracy in the shortest time is declared the winner. The Quintana of Ascoli Piceno is one of the most authentic and well-documented jousts in Italy: its rules and the events surrounding it are based on historical documents dating back to the 15th century.

But the “Quintana-experience” is not limited to the joust itself: the city is enthralled in a series of events that last about a month. The most important are the historical procession, which takes place on the Saturday evening before the joust, and of course, the joust itself, which takes place on Sunday. The procession sees the participation of over 1,500 people, all dressed in period costumes, who parade through the streets of the city. And then, a variety of other activities, including flag-waving performances, crossbow demonstrations, and medieval dances. People can also enjoy a market where they can find local products and traditional crafts.

The Quintana is a major event for Ascoli Piceno and attracts visitors from all over Italy and beyond. It is a great opportunity to experience the city’s rich history and traditions and to enjoy the local cuisine and the famous Ascoli olives. Ascoli Piceno itself is worth a visit, with its beautiful medieval center, more than 50 towers, and impressive Roman bridge. The city is also known for its art, with a Pinacoteca (art gallery) featuring works by Titian and Van Dyck, among others.

La manifestazione prende il nome dalla Quintana, antico gioco equestre romano, e la sua prima attestazione risale al 1377. La manifestazione moderna è un torneo cavalleresco che si tiene all’inizio di luglio e poi la prima domenica di agosto di ogni anno.

La Quintana è una competizione tra i sei sestieri (quartieri) della città, ognuno rappresentato da un cavaliere. I cavalieri, a cavallo, devono colpire con una lancia un bersaglio sorretto da una statua di un guerriero saraceno. Il cavaliere che colpisce il bersaglio con la massima precisione nel minor tempo viene dichiarato vincitore. La Quintana di Ascoli Piceno è una delle giostre più autentiche e documentate d’Italia: le sue regole e le vicende che la circondano si basano su documenti storici risalenti al XV secolo.

Ma la “Quintana-experience” non si limita alla giostra in sé: la città viene coinvolta in una serie di eventi che durano circa un mese. I più importanti sono il corteo storico, che si svolge il sabato sera prima della giostra, e naturalmente la giostra vera e propria, che si svolge la domenica. La processione vede la partecipazione di oltre 1.500 persone, tutte vestite con costumi d’epoca, che sfilano per le vie della città. E poi, una varietà di altre attività, tra cui esibizioni di sbandieratori, dimostrazioni di balestra e danze medievali. Le persone possono anche godere di un mercato dove possono trovare prodotti locali e artigianato tradizionale.

La Quintana è un grande evento per Ascoli Piceno e richiama visitatori da tutta Italia e non solo. È una grande opportunità per vivere la ricca storia e le tradizioni della città e per gustare la cucina locale e le famose olive ascolane. La stessa Ascoli Piceno merita una visita, con il suo bellissimo centro medievale, più di 50 torri e l’imponente ponte romano. La città è anche conosciuta per la sua arte, con una Pinacoteca (galleria d’arte) con opere di Tiziano e Van Dyck, tra gli altri.
