Pachino tomatoes drying in the sun

Sun dried tomatoes are convenient and delicious, and can easily be found in any supermarket.

These small, flavorful tomatoes come from Pachino, a village in the province of Siracusa surrounded by fields. Great eaten fresh off the plant, they are also ideal to dry in the sun, as the slow process makes them retain their natural sweetness. The European Union granted these tomatoes Protected Geographical Status in 2003, which mean that Pachino tomatoes can only be cultivated in the area between Noto and Portopalo di Capo Passero.
