A new Italian film, “The Truth About Love Is… (La verità, vi spiego, sull’amore),” was warmly received by audiences during its North America premiere at the 43rd annual Seattle International Film Festival. This smart, snappy and thoroughly modern take on motherhood is the third and latest film from Italian director Max Croci.
The story follows the life of a multitasking thirty-something mother called Dora, who tries to juggle a job, two children and several friendships after her seven-year relationship ends. With the support of her eccentric parents, a carefree girlfriend called Sara and a likable male babysitter who is a janitor by day and a poet by night, Dora struggles to get her life back on track, learning more about love and relationships in the process.
Following the screening of “The Truth About Love Is…” at the 2017 Seattle International Film Festival, Seattle audiences had plenty of questions for director Max Croci. (Amy Kowalenko)

Croci was in town in June for the opening of his film at SIFF. Born in 1968 in Busto Arsizio, north of Milan, Croci began his film career in 1995, beginning with short films before moving on to full-length productions. His first comedy, “Opposites Attract,” was released in 2015 to wide acclaim, followed by “Al Posto Tuo.”
SIFF’s spring film festival, the largest in North America, presented more than 400 films from 80 countries in 25 days. “The Truth About Love Is…” was one of six Italian films shown during the festival. We caught up with Croci after the Seattle premiere.
How did you come up with the idea for this film?
This is a true story taken from a blog that was very popular in Italy called Tiasmo. The blogger Enrica Tesio explored her life and what she went through after her boyfriend left her. In essence, she worked through her grief by writing about it and her blog became very famous in Italy. Unfortunately, women being left by their boyfriends happens a lot in my country. Enrica later turned the blog into a book and our producer, Guglielmo Marchetti, decided to make it into a movie.
Ambra Angiolini, who plays the main character Dora, is an actress you’ve worked with before.  Throughout the film, Dora breaks character and talks directly to the camera. Why use this technique?
This technique is a blog style but for movies. It was an important artistic choice. I needed to create empathy between the audience and Dora right from the start.
The film is very colorful—brightly colored clothing, stuffed animals, color-saturated backdrops. Was that intentional?
It’s important for a comedy to choose the right “language.” I tried to use a mix of languages in the film. Besides using a lot of bright colors, I also incorporated video clips such as the “Gremlins” movie, and a lot of music. I grew up watching American films, and I’m a maniac for romantic comedies, particularly from the 1940s and 1950s. I loved movies like “Sabrina” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” They used a lot of American songs in them so I chose to use many American songs, too, like the classic “Smile (though your heart is breaking).”
There’s a young boy and a baby girl in the cast. How was it working with children on the set?
It’s not easy to work with children. The boy who plays Pietro in the film was sensational. It was his first movie and we were very lucky to find him. He is older than the character that he plays but he is small for his age so that worked. He was very professional and in some ways was the best actor of all. He knew all his lines, all the time.
The hardest scenes to shoot were the ones involving the baby who is called Anna in the film, but is Melissa in real life. When we first met her, before we started filming, she was happy and smiling, very cute. But from the very first day on the set, she cried nonstop. I would say: “Lights! Action!”—and that was her cue to cry. The entire movie. We tried food, we tried smiles, nothing worked.  It was very challenging.
What is your favorite scene in the film?
At one point, Dora’s friend Sara finds herself questioning her current relationship. She goes to the sea to be by herself to think. There is one scene where she is walking by the sea, all alone. I love that scene. It’s intense and very dramatic. It reminded me of a scene in an old melodrama with Joan Crawford, and in some ways that scene was an homage to Crawford.
Do American audiences respond to the film differently from Italian audiences?
I love American audiences! I think they have responded about the same as Italian audiences, but of course with subtitles, it’s a little different. Some of the same jokes or lines don’t translate as well. We don’t have a distributor yet in the U.S. but we are hopeful.
How did you get your start as a filmmaker, and what is your next project?
I started as an illustrator in advertising but I have always loved cinema. I have directed more than 20 short films in more than two decades, starting with “Queen Be.”  I did some television, sketch comedy and then finally had the opportunity to make movies. I have made three feature films in the past three years, all comedies.
If everything goes according to plan, my next project will be a documentary, my first. It’s a strange story but I wanted something different to do after three comedies. I can’t really talk about it yet but the subject involves dinosaurs. All I can guarantee is that it won’t be another Jurassic Park.

Questo approfondimento elegante, brillante e assolutamente moderno sulla maternità è il terzo e ultimo film del regista italiano Max Croci.
La storia segue la vita di una madre multitasking sulla trentina di nome Dora, che cerca di destreggiarsi tra un lavoro, due figli e diverse amicizie dopo la fine del suo rapporto durato sette anni. Con il sostegno dei suoi genitori eccentrici, una ragazza spensierata chiamata Sara e un simpatico babysitter maschio, che è bidello di giorno e poeta di notte, Dora si sforza di rimettere in pista la sua vita, apprendendo di più sull’amore e le relazioni strada facendo.
Croci era in città a giugno per l’esordio del suo film al SIFF. Nato nel 1968 a Busto Arsizio, a nord di Milano, Croci ha iniziato la sua carriera cinematografica nel 1995, partendo dai cortometraggi prima di passare alla produzioni di lungometraggi. La sua prima commedia, “Gli opposti si attraggono”, è uscita nel 2015 con ampi riconoscimenti, seguita da “Al Posto Tuo”.

Da dove viene l’idea di questo film? 
Questa è una vera storia presa da un blog molto popolare in Italia chiamato Tiasmo. La blogger Enrica Tesio ha esplorato la sua vita e quello che ha attraversato dopo che il suo ragazzo l’ha lasciata. In sostanza, ha lavorato attraverso il suo dolore scrivendo su di esso e il suo blog è diventato molto famoso in Italia. Purtroppo, nel mio paese accade spesso che le donne siano lasciate dai loro fidanzati. Enrica ha poi trasformato il blog in un libro e il nostro produttore, Guglielmo Marchetti, ha deciso di farne un film.
Ambra Angiolini, che interpreta il personaggio principale di Dora, è un’attrice con cui ha già lavorato. Durante il film, Dora lascia il personaggio e parla direttamente alla telecamera. Perché usare questa tecnica? 
Questa tecnica è uno stile da blog, ma per i film. E’ stata una scelta artistica importante. Avevo bisogno di creare empatia tra il pubblico e Dora fin dall’inizio.
Il film è molto colorato: vestiti allegramente colorati, peluches, sfondi dai colori saturi. E’ stato intenzionale? 
È importante per una commedia scegliere il giusto “linguaggio”. Ho cercato di utilizzare un mix di linguaggi nel film. Oltre ad usare colori molti vivaci, ho anche incorporato video clip come nel film “Gremlins” e un sacco di musica. Sono cresciuto guardando i film americani, e sono un maniaco delle commedie romantiche, specialmente degli anni ’40 e ’50. Ho amato film come “Sabrina” e “Colazione da Tiffany’s”. Hanno usato tante canzoni americane per questo che ho anche scelto di usare molte canzoni americane, come il classico “Smile (anche se il tuo cuore si sta rompendo)”.
Ci sono un ragazzino e una bambina nel cast. Come è stato lavorare con i bambini sul set? 
Non è facile lavorare con i bambini. Il ragazzo che interpreta Pietro nel film è stato sensazionale. Era il suo primo film e siamo stati molto fortunati a trovarlo. È più vecchio del personaggio che interpreta, ma è piccolo per la sua età in modo da funzionare. E’ stato molto professionale e in qualche modo è stato il miglior attore fra tutti. Sapeva tutte le sue battute, sempre.
Le scene più difficili da girare sono state quelle che coinvolgevano la bambina chiamata Anna nel film, ma è Melissa nella vita reale. Quando l’abbiamo incontrata, prima di iniziare a girare, era felice e sorridente, molto carina. Ma fin dal primo giorno sul set, ha pianto senza sosta. Dicevo: “Luci! Azione!”- e quello era il suo segnale per piangere. Per tutto il film. Abbiamo provato con il cibo, abbiamo provato con i sorrisi, niente ha funzionato. E’ stato molto impegnativo.
Qual è la sua scena preferita nel film? 
Ad un certo punto, Sara l’amica di Dora si trova a mettere in discussione la sua attuale relazione. Va al mare per stare da sola a pensare. C’è una scena in cui cammina sulla riva, tutta sola. Mi piace quella scena. È intensa e molto drammatica. Mi ha ricordato una scena in un vecchio melodramma con Joan Crawford, e in qualche modo quella scena era un omaggio a Crawford.
Il pubblico americano risponde al film in modo diverso dal pubblico italiano? 
Amo il pubblico americano! Penso che abbia risposto allo stesso modo del pubblico italiano, ma ovviamente con i sottotitoli, è un po’ diverso. Alcune delle battute o delle espressioni non si traducono. Non abbiamo ancora un distributore negli Stati Uniti, ma siamo speranzosi.
Come ha iniziato a fare il regista e qual è il prossimo progetto? 
Ho iniziato come illustratore nella pubblicità, ma ho sempre amato il cinema. Ho diretto più di 20 cortometraggi in più di due decenni, a partire da “Queen Be”. Ho fatto un po’ di televisione, ho realizzato una commedia e finalmente ho avuto l’opportunità di fare film. Ho fatto tre lungometraggi negli ultimi tre anni, tutte commedie.
Se tutto va secondo i piani, il mio prossimo progetto sarà un documentario, il primo. È una storia strana ma volevo fare qualcosa di diverso dopo tre commedie. Al momento non ne posso proprio parlare, ma il soggetto coinvolge i dinosauri. Tutto quello che posso garantire è che non sarà un altro Jurassic Park.
