Contemporary jazz hits the stage of the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles. Sottovoce (literally “softly”) was the title of this performance, a unique combination of traditional and contemporary music, a lyrical musical journey where folk, jazz, and classical sounds meet.

A very special performance for the five musicians, and the last for this band, which has performed together for years. Italian singer Giovanna Gattuso gathered her long time friends and colleagues for a goodbye concert, and for this very last performance, she chose the IIC.

“Culture”, comments IIC director Alberto Di Mauro, “is nourished by national identities; but thanks to creativity, it opens to encounters and exchanges. Boundaries disappear and make way for freedom of expression.”

On stage with Giovanna Gattuso were Chris Colangelo (bass), Stefano Saccon (sax) Jimmy Branly (drums) and Emmanuel Fratianni (piano), the last one representing Italy’s “neighbor” Switzerland. The concert was in fact organized with the collaboration of the Consulate General of Switzerland, under the Auspices of the Consulate General of Italy.

Not a rare experiment for the IIC, which has collaborated with other Institutions many other times, and which is currently working on a Jazz festival that will see the participation of eleven European countries, to be held at UCLA in October 2013.
Italy meets the world in the heart of L.A., in the name of music.
