Luba Mitnik-Gankin, creator and owner of Primavera Dreams, is a true citizen of the world: she grew up in Saint Petersburg, Russia most splendid jewel; she lived, studied and worked in Paris, epitome of European art and culture, then moved to the US, to the old-school charms of Boston, where she recently entered the arena of event organizing. Her business. though, has something different from the others, as she specializes, alas, in organizing events in both New England and Italy.

What strikes the most about Luba is how polyhedric her personality, her skills and, indeed, her professional path are. An art lover with a sensible soul, who pursued a scientific career and ended up making of her ability to put together creativity and organizational skills the key to her own success.

And then, of course, there’s her love for Italy: born when she was still in Russia, she ended up making of Italy not only a home away from home, but also a huge part of her own business success. We had the pleasure to chat with Luba a while back, and to ask her some questions about her life, her love for Il Bel Paese and her unique manner to make people’s Italian dreams come true.

What brought you from the world of scientific research and academia to that of event organization and wedding planning?
I have been organizing events since my childhood, from intimate gatherings to 200+ crowds including charity events, global school reunions, concerts with internationally-renowned musicians and poets, bar/bat mitzvahs, milestone birthday parties in Russia, France, Portugal, the US, and in my beloved Italy. This has been a hobby of mine my whole life and after a long scientific career, I decided to pursue my passion full-time and help people plan events that they will remember forever.

When was your love for Italy born?
I grew up in the beautiful city of Saint Petersburg, Russia, known as the “Venice of the North” and have been in love with Italian culture since I can remember: the most breathtaking architectural ensembles of my city were built and decorated by Italian masters. My generation grew up watching great Italian movies by Fellini, Antonioni, Visconti, and we were reading Cipollino by Gianni Rodari. We listened to the music of Celentano, Al Bano e Romina Power, Ricchi & Poveri, Toto Cutugno, but also Neapolitan songs and Italian operas  – I have loved and have been listening to Italian music ever since.

I then went onto a scientific career in Paris. My French lab collaborated with another lab in Italy (Milano Polytechnic): both were the first European labs to participate in the Human Genome Project to decipher human DNA. At one point during this project, I went to Italy to learn some new techniques. What can I say? It was love at first sight! After travelling to Italy countless times, studying the language, forming friendships with Italians and exploring different regions of the country on my own and with friends, I conceived and organized a big gathering of family and friends from all over the world to celebrate a milestone birthday of mine in this beautiful country. It was a wonderful celebration, which lasted several days.

You live in New England, an amazing place, of great beauty and filled with fantastic locations. Let’s say it was an “easy” choice, but what made you pick Italy in particular, among all other countries?
I live in Boston, and enjoy my life here. I sincerely think that New England is beautiful and that there are great places one could use to have a spectacular wedding. However, nothing compares to Italy from my point of view: it is the cradle of Western culture, a beautiful country, and an open-air museum. In addition to its great ancient history and the Roman Empire, Italy gave us the Renaissance, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this.

Italy is also a well-developed modern country with established infrastructures. Italians have a unique understanding of beauty, rich traditions of organizing celebratory events. They excel in culinary creations and decorations, and offer all kind of venues and natural locations: there is something for every taste, really.

Tell us about your services: what should a bride expect from Primavera Dreams?
In terms of services, I offer fully customized packages to every bride and groom, based on their preferences, ideas, and budget. My goal is to bring their vision to life in the most creative and enjoyable way, to ensure that the experience is unforgettable and that everyone walks away from the event feeling invigorated, fulfilled, and happy. I pretty much take care of everything, as it is explained on my website, www.primaveradreams.com, from the choice of the location itself, to the handling of all the details with Italian vendors and venues, making sure my clients get the most while staying within their budget.

What’s the most outstanding or striking of all the weddings you have organized?
Honestly, I am new on the wedding arena and I believe that the most striking wedding has yet to come. However, I participated in the organization of a 3-day celebration for a milestone birthday on Lake Como for a friend from Russia. It was an exquisite event at the Casta Diva resort, packed with activities for the guests, sumptuous dinners, and different entertainment every night. We enjoyed a tour of Bellagio, cooking classes, performances by famous Russian and Italian entertainers and musicians, a helicopter excursion, a Ferrari race and an impressive fireworks display during the gala night. I was truly honored to be part of the organization of such an amazing event.

And the most curious?
The most curious or, maybe, the most touching, was the wedding of two widowers, both over the age of 80. They had known each other for many years and their families were colleagues and friends. They fell in love in the truest sense of the word. We had a charming, intimate wedding at Taj Boston, and I have to say that this couple was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!

Luba Mitnik-Gankin, ideatrice e proprietaria di Primavera Dreams, è una vera cittadina del mondo: è cresciuta a San Pietroburgo, splendido gioiello della Russia; ha vissuto, studiato e lavorato a Parigi, sinonimo di arte e cultura europea, poi si è trasferita negli Stati Uniti, nel fascino della vecchia scuola di Boston, dove è recentemente entrata nell’arena dell’organizzazione di eventi. I suoi affari tuttavia, hanno qualcosa di diverso dagli altri, dato che in realtà è specializzata nell’organizzazione di eventi sia nel New England che in Italia.

Ciò che colpisce di più di Luba è la poliedricità della sua personalità, delle sue capacità e, in verità, del suo percorso professionale. Amante dell’arte, con animo sensibile ha perseguito una carriera scientifica e ha finito per fare della sua capacità di mettere insieme creatività e capacità organizzative la chiave del suo successo.

E poi, naturalmente, c’è il suo amore per l’Italia: nato quando era ancora in Russia, ha finito per fare dell’Italia non solo una casa lontano da casa, ma anche una parte enorme del suo successo aziendale. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di chiacchierare con Luba qualche tempo fa, e di porle alcune domande sulla sua vita, il suo amore per il Belpaese e il suo modo unico di realizzare i sogni italiani delle persone.

Cosa l’ha portata dal mondo della ricerca scientifica e dal mondo accademico a quello dell’organizzazione di eventi e al wedding planner?  
Ho organizzato eventi sin dalla mia infanzia, da incontri intimi a quelli con oltre 200 persone tra cui eventi di beneficenza, riunioni scolastiche globali, concerti con musicisti e poeti di fama internazionale, bar/bat mitzvah, feste di compleanni importanti in Russia, Francia, Portogallo, Stati Uniti e nella mia amata Italia. Questo è stato un mio hobby per tutta la vita e, dopo una lunga carriera scientifica, ho deciso di perseguire la mia passione a tempo pieno e aiutare le persone a pianificare eventi che ricorderanno per sempre.

Quando è nato il suo amore per l’Italia?  
Sono cresciuta nella bellissima città di San Pietroburgo, in Russia, conosciuta come la “Venezia del Nord” e sono stata innamorata della cultura italiana sin da quando posso ricordare: i migliori complessi architettonici della mia città sono stati costruiti e decorati da maestri italiani. La mia generazione è cresciuta guardando grandi film italiani di Fellini, Antonioni, Visconti e leggendo Cipollino di Gianni Rodari. Ascoltavamo le musiche di Celentano, Al Bano e Romina Power, Ricchi & Poveri, Toto Cutugno, ma anche canzoni napoletane e opere italiane. Da sempre amo e ascolto musica italiana.

Ho poi intrapreso una carriera scientifica a Parigi. Il mio laboratorio francese ha collaborato con un altro laboratorio in Italia (Politecnico di Milano): entrambi sono stati i primi laboratori europei a partecipare al Progetto Genoma Umano per decifrare il DNA umano. Ad un certo punto, durante questo progetto, sono andata in Italia per imparare alcune nuove tecniche. Cosa posso dire? E’ stato amore a prima vista! Dopo aver viaggiato in Italia innumerevoli volte, studiando la lingua, stringendo amicizie con italiani ed esplorando diverse regioni del Paese da sola e con amici, ho ideato e organizzato un grande raduno di familiari e amici da tutto il mondo per celebrare un mio compleanno importante in questo bellissimo Paese. È stata una festa meravigliosa, che è durata diversi giorni.

Vive nel New England, un posto fantastico di grande bellezza e pieno di luoghi incantevoli. Diciamo che è stata una scelta “facile”, ma cosa le ha fatto scegliere l’Italia in particolare, tra tutti gli altri Paesi?  
Vivo a Boston e mi godo la vita qui. Credo sinceramente che il New England sia bello e che ci siano luoghi fantastici da utilizzare per un matrimonio spettacolare. Tuttavia, nulla è paragonabile all’Italia dal mio punto di vista: è la culla della cultura occidentale, un bel paese e un museo a cielo aperto. Oltre alla sua grande storia antica e all’Impero romano, l’Italia ci ha dato il Rinascimento, e non potrei esserne più grata.

L’Italia è anche un Paese moderno, ben sviluppato, con infrastrutture consolidate. Gli italiani hanno una comprensione unica della bellezza, ricche tradizioni di organizzare eventi celebrativi. Eccellono in creazioni culinarie e decorazioni e offrono ogni genere di luoghi di incontro e location naturali: ce n’è per tutti i gusti, davvero.

Ci parli dei suoi servizi: cosa dovrebbe aspettarsi una sposa da Primavera Dreams?  
In termini di servizi, offro pacchetti completamente personalizzati a tutti gli sposi, in base alle loro preferenze, idee e budget. Il mio obiettivo è quello di tradurre la loro visione della vita nel modo più creativo e piacevole, per garantire che l’esperienza sia indimenticabile e che tutti si allontanino dall’evento sentendosi rinvigoriti, soddisfatti e felici. Praticamente mi occupo di tutto, come è spiegato sul mio sito web, www.primaveradreams.com, dalla scelta della location, alla gestione di tutti i dettagli con i venditori e le sedi italiane, assicurandomi che i miei clienti ottengano il massimo pur rimanendo nei limiti del loro budget.

Qual è il più eccezionale o sorprendente di tutti i matrimoni che ha organizzato? 
Onestamente, sono nuova nel campo dei matrimoni e credo che il matrimonio più sorprendente debba ancora venire. Tuttavia, ho partecipato all’organizzazione di una celebrazione di 3 giorni per un compleanno importante sul Lago di Como per un amico russo. È stato un evento squisito nel resort Casta Diva, pieno di attività per gli ospiti, cene sontuose e diversi intrattenimenti ogni sera. Abbiamo goduto di un tour di Bellagio, lezioni di cucina, esibizioni di famosi intrattenitori e musicisti russi e italiani, un’escursione in elicottero, una gara della Ferrari e uno spettacolo pirotecnico impressionante durante la serata di gala. Sono stata davvero onorata di far parte dell’organizzazione di un evento così straordinario.

E il più curioso? 
Il più curioso o, forse, il più toccante, è stato il matrimonio di due vedovi, entrambi di età superiore agli 80 anni. Si conoscevano da molti anni e le loro famiglie erano colleghi e amici. Si sono innamorati nel vero senso della parola. Abbiamo avuto un matrimonio affascinante e intimo al Taj Boston, e devo dire che questa coppia è stata una delle più belle che abbia mai visto!
