“The new year will open with an Italian evening organized by the LA Clippers in collaboration with the Institute and dedicated to the NBA champion Danilo Gallinari, on the occasion of the game against the Utah Jazz. This event will be followed by the Filming Italy film festival, and numerous meetings dedicated to Leonardo Da Vinci, in celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of his death.”
In presenting a busy calendar of events for 2019 Valeria Rumori, director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles, underlines the importance of continuing to promote and valorize the many sectors of Italian excellence in the United States: sport, cinema, music, theatre, but also design, fashion, culinary traditions, technology and linguistics. The goal of the Italian Cultural Institute, whose area of responsibility includes Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, remains the one to carry on what was accomplished in 2018 following ministerial guidelines, in collaboration with the entire Sistema Italia and the various local cultural entities.

Valeria, how was 2018 for the IIC?
2018 was a year full of initiatives and programs in a variety of fields, very much representative of Italy.
Among the most significant new projects, the IIC of Los Angeles has joined the first World Research Day in the World, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) to valorize the work of our researchers abroad and to disseminate its results. On this occasion we conferred the IIC Los Angeles Creativity Award to Emiliana Borrelli, Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the School of Medicine of the University of California Irvine (UCI), for her research on dopamine and on its role in brain diseases, walking problems and addiction.
This year, particular attention was given to Italian design through a three-stage journey that started with the Italia Bellissima exhibition, followed by the artistic design project Not an Artist – realized in collaboration with the European Institute of Design – and ended with a presentation on the relevance and excellence of Italian industrial design in the world given by Silvio Pietro Angori, CEO of Pininfarina.

You have also dedicated some events to entrepreneurs.
Yes, the institute organized MEETItaly, along with Davide Accomazzo, a forum for Italian and Italian-American entrepreneurs and executives, also open to representative local figures of the Los Angeles area, in order to promote Italian networking and entrepreneurial creativity. We also organized two events dedicated to Digital Media and Business Entertainment, and Aerospace Research. The latter highlighted the many Italian excellences working at NASA’s Jet Propulsory Laboratory.

Being in Los Angeles, cinema remains an important sector
Yes and a new initiative on this topic was Making Cinema – First Week of Italian Cinema in the World, a project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, to give voice to Italian excellences in the field of cinema. Our Institute and Luce Cinecittà presented a special masterclass held by Milena Canonero, winner of four Academy Awards, and Stefania Cella, set designer for directors like Nick Cassavetes, Alexander Payne and Paolo Sorrentino.

Which goals did you have in particular?
One of our goals is to promote the image of Italy, collaborating with both local and Italian bodies and top notch cultural associations. In this context, to cite a few examples, we had the curators of some important exhibitions held this year at the Getty and LACMA, respectively on Caravaggio and on chiaroscuro in Renaissance engravings, and on the influence on art of Rome from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment; James Conlon, Music Director of LA Opera, illustrated their production of Don Carlo; on occasion of Gioacchino Rossini’s 150th death anniversary we organized, in collaboration with the Rossini Opera Festival, a Summer series of outdoor screenings of some of the Marche’s composer’s comic operas, that were much appreciated.
The screening of the documentary about Caravaggio organized with Sky Italia was also a great success.

What level of success have you recorded this year across the whole of your area of responsibility?
We have tried to be as active as possible also in the rest of our vast territory: our participation was very significant in various international film festivals that have brought Italian films and directors to Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Newport Beach and Houston, as well as several film festivals in Long Beach, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and San Diego. Collaboration was also strengthened with all the Italian Departments of the main universities of our jurisdiction and with cultural associations such as the Casa Italiana of Las Vegas. Lastly, the Institute supported the tours of emerging music groups such as the Bruskers Guitar Duo and the New Candys throughout the whole of our jurisdiction.

What were the events you are most proud of?
In addition to being very proud of having given the Institute’s creativity award to Emiliana Borrelli, I am very pleased that 2018 opened with a great tribute to one of the most famous faces of Italian international cinema: Gina Lollobrigida, during Filming on Italy, an event organized by the Institute with Agnus Dei Productions, received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was a real honor to have Gina Lollobrigida at the Institute in this occasion, and also Monica Bellucci, who brought to Los Angeles her latest film directed by Emir Kusturica.
Last spring we had the pleasure of having Christian Greco, the Director of the Egyptian Museum of Turin, one of the most important Egyptian archeology museums in the world, who introduced us to the intriguing world of Egyptology, and illustrated to us the central role the Museum has in Turin on a socio-cultural level. Particularly gratifying was the project NOT AN ARTIST – Toyboyz Edition, presented during the Summer in collaboration with the European Institute of Design in Milan, a collective exhibition on the artistic phenomenon of Toy Design explored through the work of four distinguished personalities: Fidia Falaschetti, Joe Ledbetter / J.Led, Massimo Giacon and Simone Legno / Tokidoki.
During the Fall, we inaugurated the annual Italian Language Week in the World and the Days of Contemporaneity, with a special presentation by Silvio Pietro Angori, CEO of the iconic Italian brand Pininfarina, to whom we gave the IIC Los Angeles Creativity Award for his role as an ambassador of Italian culture and excellence in the world.

Cinema, food, fashion, technology, culture, art: how did the perception of Italian excellences change in LA and what was the role of the IIC?
In general, on the West Coast of America there is a perception of Italy very much linked to our excellences, rather than to the stereotypes of the past. This is probably because the West Coast is mainly affected by most recent migrations of scientists, professionals and entrepreneurs with high levels of education. The role of the Institute is strategic to further promote our excellence in all sectors, from art to entrepreneurship, from science to design.

The IIC often works in close collaboration with the other entities of Sistema Italia, what events did you organize with them?
The synergy of the Institute with all the parties of Sistema Italia produced a variety of important projects. For example, we presented the Starring Europe and Cinema Italian Style film festivals with the Consulate General and the ICE Agency. This year, Cinema Italian Style brought to the Institute a tribute to the great actress Monica Vitti with the exhibition La Dolce Vitti designed by and organized with Luce Cinecittà. With ENIT and IACCW, we organized events promoting the territory of Apulia and Italian food and wine culture, during the Week of Italian Cuisine.
Any events already scheduled for 2019?
We are very enthusiastic about our 2019 schedule. Beside the Italian evening dedicated to the NBA champion Danilo Gallinari and the event Filming Italy, we are pleased to participate in the fourth edition of the Italian Perspective Series in March, an annual initiative by the Italian Department of Chapman University. A series of conferences held by various experts will analyze the relationship between Science and Culture. Among the guests, Professor Carlo Vecce of the University Federico II of Naples, who will intervene to talk about the figure of Leonardo Da Vinci, on the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of his death. Other important events will be dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci in this important anniversary, including a conference organized by UCLA, several projections of the film Being Leonardo da Vinci, written and performed by the playwright Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, and the American premiere of the film Inside Leonardo.
But 2019 will also celebrate Tintoretto, the great Veneto painter, in occasion of the 500th anniversary of his birth, and Pontormo, to whom the Getty Museum will dedicate the exhibit Pontormo: Miracolous Encounters.
In March, we will inaugurate a major exhibition dedicated to the Maison Battistoni, which combines the best Italian craftsmanship, fashion, design and entrepreneurship with great international success.
In the field of literature, we will organize a meeting with the journalist and writer Enrico Deaglio while, in that of theatre, the renowned company Societas Raffaello Sanzio will present La Terra dei Lombrichi at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Will you also propose again well established events?
Yes, to name a few, and just in the field of cinema, the Newport Beach Film Festival, the WorldFest of Houston and Cinefesta Santa Fe during the Spring, and another successful edition of Cinema Italian Style, presented by Luce Cinecittà and the American Cinematheque, in November.
