Dear readers,

here we are: it’s the last edition of 2022. Are you ready to raise your glasses and celebrate the arrival of the new year?

We at L’Italo-Americano are ready to welcome you again in 2023 with many initiatives and articles which, as always, will have two objectives: to inform you while tickling your curiosity about all those things that best reflect a true Italian spirit; and to keep you connected to your Italian-American roots through stories, places, people, experiences, language and memories.

But, as we are at the end of December, it is natural to look back at the 26 editions of 2022, while we are already working on the first issue of the new year. Psychologists often say that we should take advantage of moments in our lives that mark the end of a period, or represent a boundary of sort because they allow us to assess what we’ve reached. It is a moment of great importance because it allows us to reflect on ourselves, take stock of what we achieved and compare it all to what our expectations were. An anniversary or a birthday, a religious or even a personal recurrence, they can all function as a bookmark that shows the page we reached, how far in the chapter we are, and even if the novel we have in our hands is exciting or boring.

In other words, we can understand constructively if we are reading the right way, if we are enjoying the plot or not, if the narration is filled with details and compelling, or if, on the contrary, it is slow, tired, and cumbersome. If we take a moment to reflect, we can understand if we are doing things in the right way and if we can gain, from this analysis, useful indications on how to tackle the rest of the book. We may even get the push we need to finally commit to changes that can make us better, or achieve our goals more easily.

While reflecting on the past year, the first thing we’d like to say is “thank you.”

Thank you to you, our long-time readers, our historical supporters who send beautiful messages to us when renewing your subscriptions – messages often still written by hand, just like it used to be done: they feel like the warmest of hugs, despite the physical distance. But there are also many digital readers: you’ve grown in number and you keep on growing, because you read our online edition, but also because visits to our website, www.italoamericano.org, are on the rise, just like the interactions on our social media. And this is the best validation we can get. It means you enjoy the stories we offer to you, every time with passion; it means you appreciate the original and sometimes unusual content we propose and share our excitement when we find unique stories or meet someone who embodies the soul and lifestyle of Italy, or its creativity and ingenuity.

Our traditional raffle, this year, has been very successful. We are happy to say that “The Magic of the Amalfi Coast” raffle has been the most appreciated among all those we organized. We create these events to support our newspaper because, without such support, our non-profit organization wouldn’t be able to reach you at home or on your smartphone every two weeks. With this in mind, we don’t want simply to thank again all those who, generously, bought a ticket, but also the many who, even without winning, wrote to us they hope to win a trip this amazing next time. So, tell us where you’d like to go! Tell us which places in Italy you’d like to know better and explore, so we can build our next offer around your suggestions. Because, of course, winning a raffle is a dream coming true and we wish all our readers to win it one day, but we shouldn’t forget it’s also a trip. By following the itineraries we offer, you will be able to discover magnificent corners of the Belpaese and, maybe, once you are in Italy, you may even add an extra leg to the trip and visit Amalfi and its coast. So, don’t hesitate! Write us and let us know where you would like to go, but also if there are topics you’d like to read more about, if you have favorite subjects, or if there are people and places you think deserve an article on our pages. Because L’Italo-Americano is always on a quest for curiosities and for special ties that bring us closer to the Belpaese.

Because that’s what we’ve been since 1908: an instrument to give a voice to the Italian-American community, to its aspirations and activities, to its evolution between past and present, and between Italy and the West Coast. The great L’Italo-Americano family is always ready to give a hug to its readers, just like now, while we wish you all the best for 2023!

Cari lettori, eccoci arrivati all’ultima edizione di questo 2022. Siete pronti per alzare i calici e a festeggiare l’arrivo del nuovo anno? Noi siamo già pronti per riabbracciarvi nel 2023 con molte iniziative e tantissimi articoli che, come sempre, avranno due obiettivi: informarvi, solleticando la vostra attenzione e curiosità sugli aspetti che meglio rispecchiano l’italianità, e tenervi ancorati alle vostre radici italoamericane attraverso storie, luoghi, persone, esperienze, lingua e memorie.

Ma, arrivati a fine dicembre, non possiamo evitare di volgere lo sguardo alle 26 edizioni che ci hanno portato fino a qui mentre già siamo al lavoro sul primo numero del nuovo anno.

Gli psicologi consigliano spesso di approfittare delle occasioni che segnano un confine, una tappa, perché ci consentono di fare bilanci. E’ un momento di grande importanza perché ci dà modo di riflettere su di noi, di fare il punto su cosa abbiamo fatto e dove siamo arrivati rispetto alle nostre aspettative. Un anniversario piuttosto che un compleanno, una ricorrenza religiosa come una data personale, funzionano come dei segnalibri per cui capiamo visivamente a che pagina siamo arrivati, quanto ci manca per completare un capitolo, se il romanzo che abbiamo tra le mani è avvincente o noioso. Possiamo cioè renderci conto in modo costruttivo se stiamo affrontando la lettura nel modo giusto, se è appagante o distratta, se la narrazione è ricca di dettagli e avvincente o se al contrario segna il passo, è faticosa o stanca. Se ci fermiamo a riflettere possiamo capire se stiamo affrontando le cose nel modo giusto e se, da questa analisi, possono venire indicazioni proficue per il prosieguo del libro oppure per darci una sterzata, o una spinta in avanti per farci impegnare in cambiamenti che possono contribuire al nostro benessere o al raggiungimento dei nostri prossimi obiettivi.

Di fronte a questo bilancio, la prima cosa che vogliamo dirvi è “Grazie”.

Siete sempre i nostri affezionati lettori ma accanto a voi, storici sostenitori che ci mandate pensieri bellissimi rinnovando gli abbonamenti e scrivendoli ancora a mano come si faceva una volta per trasmettere anche il calore di un abbraccio nonostante la distanza fisica che ci separa, ci sono anche tanti nuovi lettori digitali. Siete aumentati e continuate a crescere sia perché sfogliate le edizioni online sia perchè le medie mensili delle visite sul sito www.italoamericano.org, come anche le interazioni sui nostri social, non segnano battute d’arresto. Anzi! E questa è la migliore conferma al lavoro che facciamo. Significa che gradite il racconto che vi offriamo ogni volta con passione, che la nostra ricerca di contenuti originali e insolite vi appassiona, che l’interesse che proviamo noi per primi quando troviamo storie inedite o incontriamo personalità che interpretano l’anima o il modo di vivere o la creatività e l’ingegno italiano, riesce a sollecitare la vostra attenzione.

Anche la nostra tradizionale Raffle è stata particolarmente apprezzata. Ci fa molto piacere dirvi che “The magic of Amalfi Coast raffle” è stata fra tutte quelle fatte finora, la proposta che ha avuto il miglior riscontro in termini di gradimento. Ricordandovi che le organizziamo per sostenere la pubblicazione del giornale e che senza questo aiuto essenziale la nostra fondazione no-profit non ce la farebbe ad arrivare a casa vostra o sul vostro smartphone, non vogliamo solo ringraziare nuovamente quanti generosamente hanno acquistato un biglietto ma anche i tantissimi che, pur non avendo vinto, ci hanno scritto per comunicarci la speranza di vincere la prossima volta una destinazione tanto invitante. Ecco: diteci dove volete andare, quali località italiana vi piacerebbe conoscere meglio e cercheremo di costruire la nostra proposta turistica in base ai vostri suggerimenti. Perché certamente vincere la Raffle è il sogno che si trasforma in realtà, è l’augurio che in realtà facciamo a ciascuno di voi, ma la nostra è anche una proposta di viaggio. Seguendo il percorso che proponiamo, potrete scoprire angoli meravigliosi della Penisola e magari, una volta in Italia, potrete aggiungere al vostro itinerario la tappa di Amalfi e della variopinta costiera profumata di limoni. Quindi non esitate e scriveteci, fateci sapere dove vorreste andare ma anche se avete argomenti preferiti, persone o luoghi di cui vi piacerebbe leggere perché L’Italo-Americano, sempre alla ricerca di curiosità e “anelli” che ci legano al Belpaese, dal 1908 è questo: è il mezzo che dà voce alla comunità italoamericana, alle sue aspirazioni, alle sue attività, alle sue evoluzioni tra passato e presente, tra Italia e West Coast.

Interagite con noi sui social e partecipate alla vita della comunità di cui fate parte anche solo perché amate l’Italia senza esserci nati. La grande famiglia de L’Italo-Americano è sempre pronta ad offrire un abbraccio ai propri lettori come in questo momento in cui siamo qui ad auguravi che il nuovo anno vi porti ogni bene!
