It’s a warm July evening in the Bay Area. Arshish and Surabhi Gupta, together with their kids – Zade, Zane, Zoey – are waiting at Terminal 1 at the Oakland airport. They share the waiting area with Italian and Italian-American fans, all holding and proudly wearing black and white striped gear. Ten years after last time, one Italian soccer club, Juventus FC, is back in the Bay Area for what is considered one of the biggest summer events around the world. Soccer Champions Tour is a series of games held across the United States and featuring six of the world’s most iconic European soccer clubs. With the Women’s World Cup underway in New Zealand and Australia, the hype is big for the sport that attracts fans everywhere. California is represented through San Francisco and Los Angeles, with big venues like the iconic Rose Bowl, Levi’s, and SoFi Stadiums.

Arshish and Surabhi are both originally from Dubai and moved to the Bay Area for work in 2004. They stayed on, got married, and had kids. The most important fact for this story though, they have a special connection with Italy through soccer and Juventus. The club, founded in 1897 in Turin, is the second oldest athletics club in Italy and is well known abroad thanks to the team being part of international tournaments and many players coming from different countries. These days, the club is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Agnelli family’s ownership. Giovanni Agnelli, famous Italian entrepreneur and FIAT founder, made his son Edoardo, 31, president of the club in 1923.

On Saturday, July 22nd, a last-minute change prevented thousands of fans from gathering and cheering at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara for the Juventus FC – Barcelona FC game, a night expected to be full of champions and calcio. L’Italo-Americano was able to attend the training session of Juventus players that replaced the match and talked to Arshish and Surabhi to learn more about the family’s love for Italy and Italian football.

Surabhi, how did the passion for “calcio italiano” start in the family?

We were surrounded by European football growing up in the Middle East, it’s a religion over there. Arshish is the one who was passionate about it, he played through his school years and he was born with a love for Italian football. The passion for Juventus is because he started watching Roberto Baggio in 1991. He is also a big Azzurri fan. I joke that the best day in his life was the day Italy won the World Cup in 2006, not the day his kids were born or his wedding.

One of the kids goes to the Juventus Academy Silicon Valley, why did you decide that?

This mad love for Juve is the biggest reason why he chose to drive 25 minutes to Redwood City three times a week. The Academy also hosts a World Cup where players across the world at different academies come and play games like a World Cup. 

The stop of the Soccer Champions Tour in San Francisco was added in 2023 after many years of missing from the Bay Area. What was your kids’ reaction to this news?

We’ve never seen the team play a competitive match in person. Once we found out that the team was coming to San Francisco, Arshish reached out to the local club to see if the Juventus Club of Silicon Valley had anything planned and to the Academy to see if they could arrange a meeting for all the kids. We bought tickets to the game the day they were released and have been in constant contact with other Juventus fans.

Fans don’t get to see their favorite teams that often when living abroad. The Summer Tour is one of those moments fans wait forever. How did you get ready for it?

Getting ready for the game involved buying jerseys from the Juventus store for the entire family and getting them delivered just in time for the training session. The kids were ecstatic when they found out the team would be there. They started planning which players they wanted to meet and who they were going to take pictures with. There were a few arguments on who is the biggest fan as well.

These two past days were a rollercoaster of emotions, from canceled training and game to meeting the players at the hotel. Can you tell us what you did and how you made the most out of it?

The sequence of events is what brought a mix of feelings for fans and kids. When the team arrived at Oakland, the fans had to be behind a closed fence; at the hotel, on the other hand, after the game got canceled, a few players made the fans’ day by greeting all of us. 

What was the kids’ reaction when they saw the players?

They were star-struck! They had their jerseys ready and, at the last minute, my son took off his academy jersey and got it signed by the entire team. It was one for the memory books. Meeting the players was such an experience for my kids and a moment they will treasure forever. 

The family will soon be off to Southern California…

As far as planning the trip to LA, we hope this goes seamlessly like last year when they had organized training at Loyola Marymount University. They signed almost everyone’s jersey, they stood for pictures. Maybe that event got our hopes even higher for this event in Silicon Valley.

Have the kids been to Italy yet?

I cannot tell you how many times we tried to plan a trip to Italy to watch a game. The most memorable was in March 2020, right after my husband won a VIP experience. We were going as a family. We were ready, until Covid struck. We also tried to go last year but getting a visa appointment was really hard. We finally made it last month, not for a Juventus club game, but for my son to play at the Juventus Academy World Cup.

Are you planning to go again, then?

My husband is organizing a trip in October for the Derby Della Mole game to surprise the boys and take them out of school for two days. The visa process is still hard, nevertheless, we are excited to make this happen. Let’s hope it’s a good year for the team! Since my husband is a huge Juve follower, he checks where the players dine around Turin and discovered a restaurant by a chef who is a huge Juventus fan. The walls are full of signed jerseys by many players. When we were in Turin last month, we decided to dine there. They were all amazed by a family coming from San Francisco to dine at their restaurant. The chef gifted my husband with a bottle of wine. The food was amazing too, probably one of the best meals we had in Italy.

Giovanni Agnelli, famoso imprenditore italiano e fondatore della Fiat, nominò suo figlio Edoardo, 31 anni, presidente del club nel 1923.

Sabato 22 luglio un cambiamento dell’ultimo minuto ha impedito a migliaia di tifosi di radunarsi e tifare al Levi’s Stadium di Santa Clara per la partita Juventus FC – Barcelona FC, una serata che si preannunciava all’insegna dei campioni e del calcio. L’Italo-americano ha potuto assistere all’allenamento dei giocatori della Juventus e ha parlato con Arshish e Surabhi per conoscere meglio l’amore che la famiglia ha per l’Italia e il calcio italiano.

Surabhi, come è nata in famiglia la passione per il “calcio italiano”?

In Medio Oriente eravamo circondati dal calcio europeo, è una religione laggiù. Arshish è quello che si è appassionato, ha giocato durante gli anni della scuola ed è nato allora l’amore per il calcio italiano. La passione per la Juventus è nata perché ha iniziato a seguire Roberto Baggio nel 1991. È anche un grande tifoso degli azzurri. Scherzo dicendo che il giorno più bello della sua vita è stato il giorno in cui l’Italia ha vinto la Coppa del Mondo nel 2006, non il giorno in cui sono nati i suoi figli o il giorno del suo matrimonio.

Uno dei ragazzi va alla Juventus Academy Silicon Valley, perché questa decisione?

Questo folle amore per la Juve è il motivo principale per cui Arshish ha scelto di guidare 25 minuti fino a Redwood City tre volte a settimana. L’Accademia ospita anche una Coppa del mondo in cui i giocatori di tutto il mondo di diverse accademie vengono e giocano partite come se fosse una Coppa del mondo.

La tappa del Soccer Champions Tour a San Francisco è stata aggiunta nel 2023 dopo molti anni di assenza dalla Bay Area. Qual è stata la reazione dei suoi figli a questa notizia?

Non abbiamo mai visto di persona la squadra giocare una partita competitiva. Una volta scoperto che la squadra sarebbe venuta a San Francisco, Arshish ha contattato il club locale per vedere se lo Juventus Club della Silicon Valley aveva qualcosa in programma e l’Academy per vedere se potevano organizzare un incontro per tutti i ragazzi. Abbiamo comprato i biglietti per la partita il giorno in cui sono stati emessi e siamo stati in costante contatto con altri tifosi della Juventus.

I tifosi non vedono spesso le loro squadre preferite quando vivono all’estero. Il Summer Tour è uno di quei momenti che i fan aspettano da sempre. Come vi siete preparati?

La preparazione alla partita ha comportato l’acquisto di magliette per tutta la famiglia presso lo Juventus Store e la consegna puntuale in tempo per l’allenamento. I bambini erano entusiasti quando hanno scoperto che la squadra sarebbe stata lì. Hanno iniziato a pianificare quali giocatori volevano incontrare e con chi avrebbero fatto delle foto. Ci sono state anche alcune discussioni su chi fosse il più grande fan.

Questi due ultimi giorni sono stati un ottovolante di emozioni, dall’annullamento dell’allenamento e della partita all’incontro con i giocatori in hotel. Può dirci cosa avete fatto e come ne avete ricavato il massimo?

La sequenza degli eventi è ciò che ha portato un mix di sentimenti per fan e bambini. Quando la squadra è arrivata a Oakland, i tifosi dovevano stare dietro una recinzione chiusa; in albergo invece, dopo l’annullamento della partita, alcuni giocatori hanno allietato la giornata dei tifosi salutandoci tutti.

Qual è stata la reazione dei ragazzi quando hanno visto i giocatori?

Erano colpiti dalle stelle! Avevano le maglie pronte e, all’ultimo minuto, mio ​​figlio si è tolto la maglia dell’accademia e l’ha fatta autografare da tutta la squadra. Un album dei ricordi. Incontrare i giocatori è stata una tale esperienza per i miei figli e un momento unico che custodiranno per sempre.

La famiglia presto partirà per la California del Sud…

Per quanto riguarda la pianificazione del viaggio a Los Angeles, speriamo che proceda senza problemi come l’anno scorso, quando avevano organizzato un incontro con la formazione alla Loyola Marymount University. Hanno firmato la maglia di quasi tutti, si sono distinti per le foto. Forse quell’evento ha aumentato ancora di più le nostre speranze per questo evento nella Silicon Valley.

I bambini sono già stati in Italia?

Non so dire quante volte abbiamo provato a programmare un viaggio in Italia per vedere una partita. Il più memorabile è stato nel marzo 2020, subito dopo che mio marito aveva vinto un’esperienza Vip. Stavamo andando tutti come gruppo famiglia. Eravamo pronti, finché il Covid non è arrivato. Abbiamo anche provato ad andarci l’anno scorso, ma ottenere un appuntamento per il visto è stato davvero difficile. Alla fine ce l’abbiamo fatta il mese scorso, non per una partita del club della Juventus, ma per far giocare mio figlio ai Mondiali della Juventus Academy.

Avete intenzione di tornarci, allora?

Mio marito sta organizzando una gita ad ottobre per il Derby della Mole per sorprendere i ragazzi e portarli fuori da scuola per due giorni. Il processo di visto è ancora difficile, tuttavia, siamo speranzosi di poterlo realizzare. Speriamo sia un buon anno per la squadra! Dato che mio marito è un grande tifoso della Juve, ha controllato dove cenano i giocatori in giro per Torino e ha scoperto il ristorante di uno chef che è un grande tifoso della Juventus. I muri sono pieni di maglie autografate da tanti giocatori. Quando siamo stati a Torino il mese scorso, abbiamo deciso di cenare lì. Sono rimasti tutti stupiti da una famiglia venuta da San Francisco per cenare nel loro ristorante. Lo chef ha regalato a mio marito una bottiglia di vino. Anche il cibo era incredibile, probabilmente uno dei migliori pasti che abbiamo fatto in Italia.
