Today’s word is perfect for this time of the year! The term addobbo (ahd-dohb-boh, plural addobbi) primarily signifies “decoration” or “ornament,” as noted in various dictionaries and translations, and derives from the verb addobbare, which means “to decorate,” coupled with the suffix “-o”​​.

In fact, addobbare is an interesting verb. It comes from the French word adouber, which originally meant to prepare or arm a knight for ceremony. This French term has its roots in the older Frankish word dubban, which means “to strike.” The connection here is with the traditional act of tapping a knight’s shoulders during their investiture ceremony. 

Over time, addobbo shifted from this martial context to its current meaning related to decoration, an evolution that mirrors a change in cultural practices, moving from the solemn rituals of knighthood to the art of adorning and beautifying spaces and events in modern life. 

We can indeed say that the history of addobbo is a fascinating example of how words can transform and adapt, carrying with them traces of their past.

It’s also interesting to observe how addobbo, which ranks high on the frequency list of the most frequently used terms in the Italian dictionary, has maintained a consistent presence in our language and literature over the centuries.

The term has been used to describe various forms of decorations, ranging from simple household ornaments to elaborate adornments for special occasions like weddings, religious ceremonies, and festivals. The versatility of “addobbo” is seen in its usage across different contexts, whether it be floral arrangements for a wedding (un addobbo floreale per un matrimonio) or decorations for a church (addobbo della chiesa)​​.

But, let’s face it, the best addobbi of all are the addobbi di Natale, Christmas decorations: whether we talk about the addobbi dell’albero (“Christmas tree decorations”) or about the addobbi delle strade (“the decorations in the streets”), in December this word puts a smile on everyone’s face!

In effetti, addobbare è un verbo interessante. Deriva dalla parola francese adouber, che originariamente significava preparare o armare un cavaliere per la cerimonia. Questo termine francese affonda le sue radici nella più antica parola franca dubban, che significa “colpire”. Il collegamento qui è con l’atto tradizionale di toccare le spalle di un cavaliere durante la cerimonia di investitura.

Nel corso del tempo, addobbo si è spostato da questo contesto marziale al suo significato attuale legato alla decorazione, un’evoluzione che rispecchia un cambiamento nelle pratiche culturali, passando dai solenni rituali cavallereschi all’arte di adornare e abbellire spazi ed eventi nella vita moderna.

Possiamo infatti dire che la storia di addobbo è un affascinante esempio di come le parole possano trasformarsi e adattarsi, portando con sé tracce del passato.

Ma diciamocelo, gli addobbi migliori in assoluto sono gli addobbi di Natale: sia che si parli degli addobbi dell’albero sia che si parli degli addobbi delle strade, a dicembre questa parola fa piacere a tutti!
