“I am very happy to participate to the Filming Italy Los Angeles Festival, which has brought me so much luck.” With these words Claudia Gerini, godmother for the second consecutive year of the well-known film festival, sends her personal wishes to the event, which will be held from March 18 to 21, 2021 in Los Angeles. The festival will be 90% in virtual mode, and 50 national and international films, docu-films, TV series and short films will be screened. Flanked by Harvey Keitel, President honorary representing the United States, Claudia Gerini will open the festival with a special masterclass in streaming.

“The world of both Italian and international culture” the actress underlined “needs support; we need to send a signal of restart and hope for the future, because despite having made many productions this year, theater and the whole category of actors are going through a moment of great difficulty.”

Now in its sixth edition, Filming Italy – Los Angeles is presented with the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles, organized in collaboration with the APA, the Audiovisual Producers Association and under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles. Created and organized by Tiziana Rocca, Agnus Dei and Valeria Rumori, Italian Cultural Institute Los Angeles, Filming Italy – Los Angeles wants to promote Italy as a film set and to  create a bridge between Italian and American culture. It also wants to support Italian cultural growth through its cinema, the internalization of Italian audiovisual products and the intercultural relations between the various directors, producers and artists. The Festival will be introduced by Silvia Chiave,  Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles.

“This Festival is a testimony of strength and commitment, especially for women, of the passion we have for our work. I am, alongside Tiziana Rocca,  part of this beautiful cultural initiative: thanks, Tiziana, for giving me this opportunity,” godmother Claudia Gerini concluded.

The mind behind the festival is, like every year, Tiziana Rocca, who is also Artistic Director of the Festival. “I am very happy to announce that this edition of Filming Italy – Los Angeles will take place,” she told us, “despite all the problems related to this period. Of course we had to adapt to the extraordinary situation we are experiencing, rescheduling the festival in digital mode.”

Tiziana, in this edition you decided to focus on some specific social issues. Can you tell us more?

I have decided to highlight issues I believe are particularly urgent and necessary throughout the world, without distinction. We will talk about human rights and equal opportunities, with a focus on the enhancement of women’s role in the working world, especially in the world of cinema.  Then, we’ll discuss the  environmental problems that are afflicting the planet and threatening the future of young people. And of course we will talk about cinema, in numerous masterclasses with many Italian and international actors, addressing the future of the seventh art, jeopardized by the pandemic and the lockdown. The first two of the 25 masterclasses planned with the students have been announced. One will feature Oliver Stone, who will talk about his career and his latest book, and another with Tiziano Ferro.

What are you most satisfied about this edition?

I am very happy for the decision to include the festival in the context of the celebrations for the 160th year of diplomatic relations between Italy and the United States, which want to recognize the role cinema played over the years in strengthening the friendship between our countries. I want to thank the Italian embassy in Washington, represented by Armando Varricchio for having chosen us.

How challenging was to organize the festival during  the pandemic?

Over the years, this festival has become a highly anticipated event, because it represents a rare opportunity for many Italian artists to reach a wider audience in an international context. Despite the complicated historical period the whole world had to face, Filming Italy continued its run, from Sardinia to Venice, firmly believing in the importance and power of culture, hoping for a prompt rebirth for cinema and its productions.”

How did the festival have to adapt?

The festival, in digital mode, will be held on the streaming platform of MyMovies, which for the occasion will create a virtual hall with 1500 seats for the Los Angeles public, including producers, distributors, departments and film students. To ensure all safety parameters are respected, online screenings will also be protected with Hollywood Grade DRM and only visible in the United States.

This year, too, the festival will reward women in the film industry with a special prize.

Yes, the collaboration with Women in Film, TV & Media Italy was confirmed this year as well. Born in Los Angeles, WIF has been supporting women who have worked in the film industry and behind the camera since 1973. Today, WIF organizations around the world are working for a fairer sector through awareness programs, incentives and legal support. The Woman Power Award was born from this partnership, to support women in the world of cinema: talented screenwriters, actresses and producers. In addition, there will also be the Certificate of Recognition of the City of Los Angeles, a special certificate delivered by Los Angeles City Council member Joe Buscaino to Italian actors and directors who distinguished themselves during the year with the stories they told.

The focus will not only be on cinema.

That’s right, my platform is available not only to promote Italian films abroad, but also to promote the arts that revolve around cinema. All related, made in Italy activities will be highlighted with the promotion of  Tirelli tailoring costumes, and sets by the likes  of Dante Ferretti, Francesca Lo Schiavo, and  Dimitri Capuani, Matteo Garrone’s set designer who also worked on the recent, new cinematic version of Pinocchio. We will also talk about those who deal with visual effects, as in the case of the film Romulus. In short, there are many Italian talents to be valued!

Filming Italy – Los Angeles does not only pay attention to women, but also to the environment.

Yes, our festival is attentive to the care and protection of the environment. All prizes are made with eco-sustainable and recycled materials, to promote environmental protection and demonstrate that even on these occasions we can pay attention to the planet using glass, a “green carpet” and recycled materials. For issues related to environmental protection, Filming Italy – Los Angeles renews its collaboration with FareAmbiente, the European ecological movement for sustainable development, of which the philosopher Vincenzo Pepe is president.

The festival will wrap March 21st but the 25th is going to be an important day…

Yes, at the end of the festival there will also be the official day dedicated to Dante Alighieri in Italy and in the world, and Filming Italy: Dante 700 will be presented: this review will include the screening of the silent film L’Inferno, by Francesco Bertolini in collaboration with the Cineteca of Bologna, as well as exclusive Dante readings by special guests of the 2021 edition and past editions. The initiatives are organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles with the Agnus Dei Association, under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles. 

Filming Italy: Dante 700 will also be presented in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institutes of Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Washington.

“Sono molto felice di partecipare al Filming Italy Los Angeles Festival, che mi ha portato tanta fortuna”. Con queste parole Claudia Gerini, madrina per il secondo anno consecutivo del noto film festival, invia il suo augurio personale all’evento che si terrà dal 18 al 21 marzo a Los Angeles con modalità al 90% virtuale e durante il quale saranno proiettati più di 50 film nazionali e internazionali, docu-film, serie tv e cortometraggi, molti dei quali ancora assolutamente inediti a livello mondiale. Affiancata dal presidente onorario in rappresentanza degli Stati Uniti, ovvero l’attore Harvey Keitel, Claudia Gerini aprirà il festival con una speciale masterclass in streaming.

La mente dietro al festival è, come tutti gli anni, quella di Tiziana Rocca, anche Direttore Artistico del Festival. “Sono molto felice di poter annunciare che questa edizione del Filming Italy – Los Angeles si farà” ci ha raccontato “nonostante tutte le problematiche legate a questo periodo. Naturalmente ci siamo dovuti adeguare alla situazione straordinaria che stiamo vivendo, riprogrammando il festival soprattutto in modalità digitale.
Tiziana, ha voluto che questa edizione si concentrasse su alcune specifiche tematiche sociali. Puoi dirci di più?
Ho deciso di dare spazio a temi che ritengo particolarmente urgenti e necessari in tutto il mondo, senza distinzione. Affronteremo i diritti umani e le pari opportunità, con un focus sulla valorizzazione delle donne nel mondo lavorativo, soprattutto in quello del cinema, e poi ancora delle problematiche ambientali che stanno affliggendo il pianeta e minacciano il futuro stesso dei giovani. E naturalmente parleremo di cinema, nelle numerose masterclass in programma con tantissimi attori italiani e internazionali, affrontando il futuro della settima arte, messo così a repentaglio dalla pandemia e dal lockdown. Sono state annunciate le prime due delle 25 masterclass previste con gli studenti. Una avrà come protagonista Oliver Stone che racconterà la sua carriera e parlerà del suo ultimo libro, e un’altra con Tiziano Ferro.
La cosa di cui è più soddisfatta di questa edizione?
Sono molto felice per la decisione di far entrare il festival nell’ambito delle celebrazioni per il 160° anno di relazioni diplomatiche tra Italia e Stati Uniti, che vuole riconoscere il ruolo che il cinema ha avuto negli anni per rafforzare l’amicizia tra i nostri Paesi e questo grazie all’Ambasciata italiana di Washington, rappresentata da Armando Varricchio, che ha scelto questa sesta edizione.
Quale è la soddisfazione più grande nonostante le difficoltà legate al periodo storico che stiamo vivendo?
Negli anni, questo festival è diventato un appuntamento molto atteso, perché rappresenta una rara occasione per tanti artisti italiani di raggiungere una platea più ampia in un contesto internazionale. Nonostante il periodo storico complicato che il mondo intero si è trovato ad affrontare, Filming Italy ha proseguito la sua corsa, dalla Sardegna fino a Venezia, credendo fermamente nell’importanza e nel potere della cultura, auspicando una pronta rinascita per il cinema e le sue produzioni”.
Come vi siete organizzati a livello pratico per fare in modo che il festival arrivi ovunque?
Il festival, in modalità digitale, si terrà sulla piattaforma streaming di MyMovies, che creerà per l’occasione una sala virtuale da 1500 posti per il pubblico di Los Angeles, che include produttori, distributori, dipartimenti e studenti di cinema. Per garantire tutti i parametri di sicurezza, le proiezioni online saranno protette con l’Hollywood Grade DRM e visibili solo negli Stati Uniti.
Anche quest’anno il festival celebrerà le donne del settore cinematografico con un premio speciale.
Sì, è stata confermata anche quest’anno la collaborazione con Women in Film, TV & Media Italia. Nato a Los Angeles, WIF sostiene le donne che lavorano nel mondo del cinema e dietro la macchina da presa dal 1973. Oggi le organizzazioni WIF in tutto il mondo stanno lavorando per un settore più equo attraverso programmi di sensibilizzazione, incentivi e sostegno legale. Da questa partnership è nato il premio “Woman Power Award”, per supportare le donne del mondo del cinema: sceneggiatrici, attrici e produttrici di talento. Inoltre, ci sarà il “Certificate of Recognition” della Città di Los Angeles, un attestato speciale consegnato dal Los Angeles City Council member Joe Buscaino ad alcuni attori e registi italiani che si sono distinti durante l’anno con le storie che hanno raccontato.
Il focus non sarà solo relativo al cinema in senso stretto.
Esatto, la mia piattaforma è a disposizione non solo per promuovere i film italiani all’estero, ma anche per promuovere le arti che gravitano attorno al cinema. Sarà dato risalto a tutto l’indotto made in Italy con la promozione dei migliori costumi della sartoria Tirelli, delle più belle scenografie da Dante Ferretti a Francesca Lo Schiavo, a Dimitri Capuani, scenografo di Matteo Garrone che ha lavorato anche all’ultimo film, Pinocchio. Parleremo anche di chi si occupa di effetti visivi, come nel caso del film Romulus. Insomma, ci sono tanti talenti italiani da valorizzare!
Filming Italy – Los Angeles non ha un occhio di riguardo solo per le donne, ma anche per l’ambiente.
Sì, il nostro festival è attento alla cura e alla salvaguardia dell’ambiente, facendo realizzare tutti i premi con materiali eco-sostenibili e di riciclo, per promuovere la tutela ambientale e dimostrare che anche in queste occasioni si può avere un’attenzione per il pianeta utilizzando materie come il vetro, un “green carpet” e materiali riciclati. Per le tematiche inerenti e collegate alla salvaguardia ambientale, Filming Italy – Los Angeles rinnova la sua collaborazione con FareAmbiente, movimento ecologista europeo per lo sviluppo sostenibile, di cui è presidente il filosofo Vincenzo Pepe.
Il 25 marzo sarà una giornata importante per il festival.
Sì, in chiusura del festival ci sarà anche la giornata ufficiale dedicata a Dante Alighieri in Italia e nel mondo, e verrà presentato il Filming Italy: Dante 700, una rassegna che includerà la proiezione del film muto L’inferno di Francesco Bertolini con la Cineteca di Bologna, oltre ad esclusive letture dantesche da parte di ospiti d’eccezione dell’edizione 2021 e delle edizioni passate. Le iniziative sono organizzate dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles con l’Associazione Agnus Dei sotto gli auspici del Consolato Generale d’Italia di Los Angeles. Filming Italy: Dante 700 sarà presentato in collaborazione con gli Istituti Italiani di Cultura di Chicago, New York, San Francisco e Washington.
