“A celebration to remember the past and to educate future generations”

October is here and L’Italo-Americano is pleased to once again publish a month of editions dedicated to Italian Heritage. This entire month we celebrate the many achievements and successes of not only Americans of Italian descent, but also Italians living in America.
In spirit of this celebration, we should remember that not only culture and tradition render Italians their sense of individuality, but also the Italian language itself. Simply stated, the Italian language is often an intrinsic part of our identity, even for those of Italian heritage that don’t speak the language.
Examples of our ties to the Italian language are found in much of our everyday world whether it be ordering our favorite food or wine at a restaurant or in conversations about history and the arts. For many of us, the use of an Italian name or word will be inevitable in these cases.
The fact is that many Italian words are recognizable even to those persons that do not speak the language. Often these familiar words are synonymous with quality, style, and innovation, further emphasizing the role that the Italian language has in defining the culture as a whole. Our language truly is a key aspect of Italian Heritage. Raising language awareness it is a critical part of L’ltalo-Americano’s mission because we recognize the role that language plays in defining us.
So when the question is posed, “Why does L’Italo-Americano include Italian language content?”, the answer is simple. We are compelled to bring our readers closer to all aspects of their culture, including the Italian language. In pursuit of our mission, we offer some suggestions to aid those of you that are seeking to become more acquainted with the Italian language:
•Take an Italian language class at your local Community College, online or through one of your local community organizations.
•Take advantage of the inexpensive and often free smart phone apps that can help you learn the language.
•Promote the use of Italian in your home and for generations to come by sending your children or grandchildren to an immersion school where Italian is offered or partner with other local Italian families to encourage your local school district to add an Italian program to their existing immersion schools and language curriculum.
•Vacation in Italy or enroll in a study abroad program to immerse yourself in the language.
•Invite relatives that live in Italy to visit you in the United States and stay with your family.
•Participate in an educational program allowing Italian students to stay in your home during their study time abroad here in the United States.
•Use index cards or post-it-notes to label items/furniture around your home and have some family fun learning the language using everyday objects.
•Download some Italian music to play in your car and learn to sing along.

Anche il mese di ottobre è arrivato e L’Italo-Americano è lieto di pubblicare di nuovo un mese di edizioni dedicate al patrimonio italiano. Per tutto questo mese celebreremo i successi e le conquiste non solo degli americani di origine italiana, ma anche degli italiani che vivono in America.
Nello spirito di questa celebrazione, vorremmo ricordare che non solo la cultura e la tradizione distinguono gli italiani, ma anche la loro lingua. Detto semplicemente, la lingua italiana è spesso una parte intrinseca della nostra identità, anche per coloro che pur essendo di origine italiana non parlano la lingua.
Alcuni esempi di come siamo legati alla lingua italiana si possono trovare nella nostra quotidianità, sia quando ordiniamo il nostro piatto o vino preferito in un ristorante o conversando di storia o arte. Per molti di noi, l’utilizzare un nome o una parola italiani è inevitabile in questi casi.
Voglio dire che molte parole italiane sono riconoscibili persino da quelle persone che non parlano la lingua. Spesso queste parole familiari sono sinonimo di qualità, stile e innovazione, ed enfatizzano ulteriormente il ruolo che la lingua italiana ha nel definire la nostra cultura. La lingua è veramente una parte fondamentale del patrimonio italiano. L’aumentare la coscienza dell’importanza della lingua è un aspetto fondamentale della missione dell’Italo-Americano perché riconosciamo il ruolo che essa riveste nel definirci.
Perciò quando ci viene posta la domanda, “Perché ci sono contenuti in italiano nell’Italo-Americano?”, la risposta è semplice. Ci sentiamo in dovere di avvicinare i nostri lettori a tutti gli aspetti della loro cultura, incluso la lingua italiana. Nel perseguire la nostra missione, vi offriamo alcuni suggerimenti per aiutare coloro che tra voi stanno cercando di approfondire la conoscenza della lingua.
•Seguite un corso di italiano presso il vostro Community College, online o in una delle vostre organizzazioni locali.
•Approfittate delle applicazioni convenienti o spesso gratuite sul vostro smart phone che possono aiutarvi a imparare la lingua.
•Promuovete l’uso dell’italiano nella vostra casa per le generazioni future mandando i vostri figli o nipoti in una scuola full immersion dove viene offerto l’italiano o unitevi con altre famiglie italiane della vostra zona per incoraggiare il distretto scolastico ad aggiungere un programma di italiano nelle scuole full immersion già esistenti.
•Fate una vacanza in Italia o iscrivetevi a una vacanza studio per immergervi nella lingua.
Invitate parenti che vivono in Italia a visitare gli Stati Uniti e a trascorrere del tempo con la vostra famiglia.
•Partecipate ad un programma educativo ospitando studenti italiani durante il loro periodo di studio negli Stati Uniti.
•Usate delle schede o dei bigliettini per etichettare gli oggetti nella vostra casa divertendovi con la famiglia ad imparare le parole delle cose che avete a disposizione ogni giorno.
•Scaricate della musica italiana da ascoltare in macchina e imparate le parole cantandole.
Vi auguro di trascorrere un mese dedicato all’approfondimento o alla riscoperta della cultura e della lingua italiana.
