Marriage to the right person can really pay off. Companionship, a built-in cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on, someone to remind you where you left your glasses – all perks of saying “I do.”

Marriage can pay off in other ways, too, in the Italian region of Lazio. On February 28th of this year, an innovative program launched offering lucky couples 2,000 euro in reimbursement for wedding-related expenses. That dreamed-of destination wedding is suddenly more realistic! 

In Lazio alone, Italy’s capital region, weddings declined from an average of 15,000 a year in pre-pandemic 2019 to approximately 9,000 over the ensuing two-plus years since Covid restrictions went into effect. With matrimonial dreams put on hold, the vast array of wedding-related businesses in Lazio suffered greatly. Possibly taking a cue from the “one-euro house” schemes adopted by many Italian regions, local authorities created In Lazio with Love, a program offering ten million euro in grants towards wedding-related expenses. As a result, a lucky 5,000 couples now have the chance to bolster their bank accounts for expenditures ranging from photographers, venues, wedding attire, flowers, catering, and even wedding rings…with the one caveat being that all services must be obtained from Lazio based businesses. 

Not a bad deal — but what’s the catch, one might warily ask? Other than the requirement to work with Lazio providers of services and products, the remaining hurdles are not terribly daunting, comparatively speaking. Couples, both Italian and foreign, who wish to be candidates must marry between January 1 and December 31, 2022 (translation: hurry!), and the online application for reimbursement must be completed between February 28, 2022, and January 31, 2023. Up to five receipts can be submitted totaling no more than 2,000 euro, along with documentation verifying purchase within Lazio, a product or service’s relevance to the wedding, and proof of completion of required tax forms. These and a few other nitty-gritty details, along with the application, are found on the Nel Lazio con Amore official website (www.regione.lazio.it/nellazioconamore). 

While loaded with romantic connotations – who wouldn’t love to get hitched in the shadow of the Trevi Fountain? – the program’s intent is pure and simple economics. “The scheme is needed to support a sector that has suffered badly from the economic crisis. We have put the significant investment in place also with an eye on the tourism sector, and with the awareness and pride of being able to boast about every part of our region…,” Lazio Governor Nicola Zingaretti recently shared with The Guardian. And really, it’s quite brilliant. Along with destination weddings and the associated trappings come guests who typically stay awhile, leaving behind a trail of tourist dollars/euro to bolster a sagging industry.

The In Lazio with Love program is innovative, but not the first novel idea intended to boost the region’s economy. In the summer of 2021, Governor Zingaretti launched the More Nights, More Dreams program offering tourists an extra free night’s accommodation if three or more consecutive nights were booked, and two extra nights for those booking five consecutive nights. With major attractions such as Rome suffering a Covid-related eighty percent reduction in tourist traffic, these programs are hopeful antidotes to an ailing economy.  

While Rome is the star in Lazio’s crown, the region has a vast array of romantic locations that provide a fine backdrop for sharing nuptials, especially for those wanting to avoid a large city. A dramatic hilltop town is more to your liking? Nothing could be more breathtakingly dramatic than pledging your love in Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town so enchanting they charge an entrance fee. If waterfront is more appealing, Lake Bracciano offers surreal beauty alongside the charming old village of Bracciano. And just a bit further north is Bolsena and its lovely lake and nearby mountains – imagine the photos! 

If your wedding would not be complete without sand and the chatter of gulls, consider Santa Marinella on the Tyrrhenian Sea. All the amenities of a seaside town await, as well as wine trails tucked in the nearby mountains of Tolfa. Other beach destinations exist all along Lazio’s coastline, a large number qualifying as coveted Blue Flag beaches for their cleanliness and beauty. 

For those preferring a quiet backdrop to pledge their love (and maybe an added touch of historic macabre), consider the Etruscan necropolises found in Tarquinia and Cerveteri. Perhaps the longevity vibes from these two and a half thousand-year-old tombs will rub off on your marriage…chissà (who knows). 

While not exceedingly complex in comparison to many government-affiliated endeavors in Italy, the application process for In Lazio with Love is definitely time-sensitive and funds are limited. When those 10 million euro have been handed out, the gravy train stops. Take note, too, that the online forms and details are all in Italian. Improper filling out due to language barriers could cause a deal-killing delay. 

You’ll certainly spend more than 2,000 euro on a destination wedding, but if the notion of pledging your love in a romantic Italian setting is calling, that extra refund can further sweeten the already-sweet pot. Here’s to the payoff of happily ever after!  

Il matrimonio con la persona giusta può davvero ripagare. Dà compagnia, sostiene il morale, è una spalla su cui piangere, è qualcuno che ti ricorda dove hai lasciato gli occhiali: tutti vantaggi del dire “lo voglio”.
Il matrimonio può ripagare anche in altri modi, nella regione del Lazio. Il 28 febbraio di quest’anno è stato lanciato un programma innovativo che offre 2.000 euro di rimborso per le spese di matrimonio a coppie fortunate. Il matrimonio in una destinazione da sogno è improvvisamente più realistico!

Nella sola regione del Lazio, la capitale d’Italia, i matrimoni sono diminuiti da una media di 15.000 all’anno nel 2019, anno pre-pandemia, a circa 9.000 nei due anni successivi all’entrata in vigore delle restrizioni Covid. Con i sogni matrimoniali messi in attesa, la vasta gamma di imprese legate al matrimonio ha sofferto molto nel Lazio. Forse prendendo spunto dai programmi “casa da un euro” adottati da molte regioni italiane, le autorità locali hanno creato Nel Lazio con amore, un programma che offre dieci milioni di euro di contributi per le spese matrimoniali. Il risultato è che 5.000 coppie fortunate hanno ora la possibilità di rafforzare il loro conto in banca per spese che vanno da fotografi, location, abiti da sposa, fiori, catering e persino fedi nuziali… con l’unica avvertenza che tutti i servizi devono essere forniti da imprese laziali.

Non è un cattivo affare. Ma dove sta il trucco, ci si potrebbe chiedere con cautela? A parte l’obbligo di lavorare con fornitori di servizi e prodotti laziali, gli ostacoli rimanenti non sono poi così terribilmente scoraggianti, in termini comparativi. Le coppie, sia italiane che straniere, che vogliono essere candidate devono sposarsi tra il 1° gennaio e il 31 dicembre 2022 (traduzione: affrettatevi!), e la domanda online per il rimborso deve essere compilata tra il 28 febbraio 2022 e il 31 gennaio 2023. Si possono presentare fino a cinque ricevute per un totale di non più di 2.000 euro, insieme alla documentazione che attesti l’acquisto nel Lazio, l’attinenza del prodotto o del servizio al matrimonio e la prova della compilazione dei moduli fiscali richiesti. Anche se carico di connotazioni romantiche – a chi non piacerebbe sposarsi all’ombra della Fontana di Trevi? – l’intento del programma è pura e semplice economia. “Il programma è necessario per sostenere un settore che ha sofferto molto per la crisi economica. Abbiamo messo in campo l’importante investimento anche con un occhio al settore turistico, e con la consapevolezza e l’orgoglio di poterci vantare di ogni parte della nostra regione…”, ha recentemente condiviso con The Guardian il governatore del Lazio Nicola Zingaretti. E davvero è un’idea piuttosto brillante. Tra destinazione di matrimoni e ornamenti associati, arrivano gli ospiti che tipicamente si fermano per un po’, lasciando dietro di sé una scia di dollari/euro turistici per sostenere un’industria in declino.

Il programma Nel Lazio con amore è innovativo, ma non è la prima idea innovativa destinata a rilanciare l’economia della regione. Nell’estate del 2021, il governatore Zingaretti ha lanciato il programma “Più notti, più sogni”, offrendo ai turisti una notte in più gratuita per chi prenota tre o più notti consecutive, e due notti in più per chi prenota cinque notti consecutive. Con le maggiori attrazioni come Roma che subiscono una riduzione dell’ottanta per cento del traffico turistico, questi programmi sono antidoti pieni di speranza per un’economia in difficoltà.

Se Roma è la pietra preziosa nella corona del Lazio, la regione ha una vasta gamma di luoghi romantici che forniscono un ottimo sfondo per le nozze, soprattutto quanti vogliono evitare una grande città. Una spettacolare città collinare è più di vostro gradimento? Non c’è niente di più affascinante che promettere il vostro amore a Civita di Bagnoregio, una cittadina così incantevole che l’ingresso è a pagamento. Se il lungolago è più attraente, il lago di Bracciano offre una bellezza surreale insieme all’affascinante borgo antico di Bracciano. E appena un po’ più a nord c’è Bolsena con il suo bel lago e le montagne vicine: immaginate le foto!

Se il vostro matrimonio non sarebbe completo senza la sabbia e il chiacchiericcio dei gabbiani, considerate Santa Marinella sul Mar Tirreno. Tutte le comodità di una città di mare vi aspettano, così come i sentieri del vino nascosti nelle vicine montagne della Tolfa. Ci sono altre destinazioni balneari lungo tutta la costa del Lazio, un gran numero si qualifica con l’ambita Bandiera Blu per il decoro e la bellezza.

Per coloro che preferiscono uno sfondo tranquillo per giurarsi amore (e forse un tocco di macabro storico), prendete in considerazione le necropoli etrusche che si trovano a Tarquinia e Cerveteri. Forse le vibrazioni di longevità di queste tombe vecchie di due millenni e mezzo influenzeranno il vostro matrimonio… chissà.

Sebbene non sia eccessivamente complesso in confronto a molte iniziative governative in Italia, fare domanda per Nel Lazio con amore è soprattutto una questione di tempo e i fondi sono limitati. Quando quei 10 milioni di euro saranno stati distribuiti, il treno della fortuna si fermerà. Notate anche che i moduli online e i dettagli sono tutti in italiano. Una compilazione errata dovuta a barriere linguistiche potrebbe causare un ritardo che impedirà l’affare.
Spenderete certamente più di 2.000 euro per un matrimonio in una destinazione da sogno, ma se l’idea di promettere il vostro amore in un romantico ambiente italiano vi alletta, quel rimborso extra può addolcire ulteriormente quel che è già dolce. Ecco il payoff del “per sempre felici e contenti”!
