Poised for growth in 2017, Seattle based coffee roastery Caffè Umbria opens its first Training Lab, to share three generations of coffee knowledge with new employees and wholesale customers. The Training Lab, located at 1700 NW Marshall, Portland, is a dedicated home for the company’s training team to provide a focused, hands-on coffee education.
The company is steeped in the rich tradition of Italian coffee roasting. One of the owners, Emanuele Bizzarri has direct ties to Italy. Many family members actively participate in roasting operations in both Italy and the US. The original “spinta” (spark) that motivated his grandfather to open a coffee roasting business right after World War II was a connection with an uncle that was a coffee roaster. His grandfather Ornello started his own coffee business in Perugia in the 1950’s and the thread of that business continues today. Ornello’s son Umberto Bizzarri grew up with the family business and came to the US in 1986, followed closely by his son Emanuele who came in 1988 and worked side-by-side with his father until 1998 in the coffee business. After a brief stint in Italy, Emanuele returned to the US in 2001 and helped start Caffè Umbria.

roasting coffee and am devoted to sharing that authentic experience through our cafés and wholesale
customers. By educating and training our wholesale partners about those traditions, we ensure everyone a
consistent experience, whether I prepare their coffee drink, or one of our baristas does.”

Students visiting the Training Lab will take the coffee tradition that was born in Italy into the future. They will be given the knowledge and tools necessary to prepare espresso drinks and coffee using a variety of brew methods and meet Caffe Umbria’s high standards for excellence in every cup. Training is curated to match each wholesale partner’ individual needs and provided on an ongoing basis.
The occasion was marked by a grand opening celebration Thursday, February 16th. Opening festivities included traditional Italian libations: Prosecco and Espresso Corretto, served alongside light hors d’oeuvres.
