He had two very specific goals for his term in Los Angeles: to answer as best as possible to the needs of the Italian community, and to support Italian excellence in the field of entrepreneurship, cinema, culture, science and, more in general, of Italian style.
Now, at the end of his diplomatic mission at the head of the Consular District that includes Southern California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, Consul General Antonio Verde can certainly be satisfied. Graduated in Political Science at the Oriental University of Naples, Verde entered the diplomatic career in 1990. His experiences in the Italian diplomatic and consular offices have led him over the years to Tokyo, Moscow, Strasbourg, and Sydney, where he took office as a Consul General for the first time. Antonio Verde began his mandate in California on October 22nd 2014 and now a new diplomatic challenge awaits him at the Embassy of Italy in Egypt.

“Los Angeles will remain in my heart, it has been a significant city both from a professional and personal point of view.” Antonio Verde tells us, while assessing the results at the end of his four years in office. “This is an important departure and like all departures it is somehow painful. I leave Los Angeles with great regret, but also with amazing memories of the many friends I met in this extraordinary metropolis.”
Consul Verde, what was the most important challenge in these years?
The challenge was, first of all, that of reaffirming and strengthening Italy’s presence here, so far from home, and to become a point of reference for all our compatriots. In this context, it was first of all necessary to efficiently provide the consular services collectivity requires, from the classical issuing of passports to more complex practices, including assistance to our compatriots in transit and, in many cases unfortunately, in situations of emergency. At the same time, it was necessary to make every effort to promote our country in all possible fields: artistic, cultural, linguistic, scientific, commercial. The number of initiatives, the positive impact witnessed with Americans and foreigners in general, the number of issued visas, in addition to the considerable attention given to us by the press, speak for themselves and crown the work of four intense years where, in spite of our limited resources, we nevertheless met multiple needs, often unlimited and unpredictable by their very nature. It was a doable mission but certainly very complex, and – thanks to my good staff at the Consulate – it has been dealt with very positive results.

During your mandate in Moscow you witnessed the transition from Boris Yeltsin to Vladimir Putin and here in America from Obama to Trump. How did you experience these two important historical and political changes?
From a professional point of view, I consider myself privileged to have had the opportunity to closely witness such historical transitions in two big, important and complex countries like Russia and the United States. These are experiences that have enriched me as a human and that I will bring with me as a precious teaching and with indelible memory.
There have been many initiatives carried out with the collaboration of the Italian System in LA. Which project are you most proud of?
Our activity has been strengthened by an increasingly intense and synergistic collaboration with all the other official Italian institutions operating in Los Angeles: the Italian Institute of Culture, the ICE – Italian Trade Promotion Agency, the ENIT- Italian Government Tourist Board, the IACCW – Italian-American Chamber of Commerce. Together, we have been able to promote our territories, our culture, art, science and economy in a coherent and integrated way, by creating important partnerships, like the one between Italian partners and their local counterparts, such as the Port of Los Angeles, the Getty Museum and other important Los Angeles based companies.
In these past four years there were also many exchanges with Italy, such as the return of the Head of Hades and the most recent arrival of the Satiro Ebbro at the Getty Museum. Many relations with your city, Naples.
It is natural that the Getty Museum sought a connection with Naples – and with Campania – where the largest Archaeological Museum in the world is located, for collaborative activities related to Classical antiquity, but also to many other artistic expressions that almost ideally combine these two great seaside towns. For us, The Getty is a very important partner and, having put behind some of the past experiences, it shares with us today a more dynamic and vital phase.

In addition to having worked with some realities in my hometown, we have been more active on the whole national Italian territory. I think about, to name just a few, the UCLA collaborations with many Italian universities, the projects with the Galleria Borghese of Rome, the Egyptian Museum of Turin, the initiatives with Sardinia, Sicily, the Tri-Veneto, with Tuscany and, this year, also with Puglia that was one of the protagonist at the NIAF and that will once again be in the spotlight in the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World that will take place in Los Angeles from November 12th to 18th, simultaneously with Cinema Italian Style and with the official presentation in Hollywood of the Oscar-nominated Italian film, Dogman by Matteo Garrone.

Is there something of these four years that you will bring with you?
First of all, a great love for this city that is so full of positive energy and has the ability to face life with energy and without ever neglecting the human aspect and creativity. It is an important legacy that will support me in my next work experience in Egypt, a country, like Italy, in the Mediterranean area, that has great vitality; we have a long and common history of friendship and collaboration with Egypt, a country that always gave great attention to Italy.

What will you miss about Los Angeles?
Its light, its colors, the liveliness of LaLaLand and its ability to make us dream. I will miss the many friends I got to know in these years, I will miss the city’s positive attitude towards life, with its ability to tell about itself, to laugh about itself and reflect about itself. I will miss that “California Dreaming” picturing California as a new and exciting world, and that I tried to live to the full.

What message would you like to leave to the consul who will now take your place?
Silvia Chiave is a very competent colleague. I wish her to live and work well and joyfully in Los Angeles, just as I had the luck to do, enjoying the sun, the ocean – whose view melts the heart – the friendship of the angelenos and the warmth of our splendid Italian community!
Aveva due obiettivi ben precisi per il suo mandato a Los Angeles, ovvero rispondere nel miglior modo possibile alle esigenze della nostra Comunità e sostenere al massimo le eccellenze italiane nel campo dell’imprenditoria, del cinema, della cultura, della scienza e più in generale dell’Italian Style. Ora, a compimento della tappa diplomatica che l’ha portato ad operare nel Distretto Consolare che comprende la California del Sud, l’Arizona, il Nevada ed il New Mexico, il Console Generale Antonio Verde può dirsi sicuramente soddisfatto.
Laureato in Scienze Politiche all’Orientale di Napoli, Verde ha fatto il suo ingresso nella carriera diplomatica nel 1990. Le sue esperienze nelle sedi diplomatico-consolari italiane l’hanno portato negli anni a Tokyo, Mosca e Strasburgo, oltre che a Sydney, dove ha ricoperto per la prima volta la carica di Console Generale. Antonio Verde ha iniziato il suo mandato in California il 22 ottobre del 2014 ed ora una nuova sfida diplomatica lo attende, all’Ambasciata d’Italia in Egitto.
“Los Angeles mi rimarrà nel cuore. È stata per me una tappa davvero molto importante, sia dal punto di vista umano che professionale” ci confida il Console, nel tracciare un bilancio alla fine dei suoi quattro anni di mandato. “È venuto ora il momento del distacco che, come tutti i distacchi, porta con sé una parte dolorosa. Lascio quindi Los Angeles con grande malinconia, ma arricchito di bellissimi ricordi e di tanti amici che ho trovato in questa straordinaria metropoli”.
Console Verde, quale è stata la sfida più importante che ha dovuto affrontare in questi anni?
La sfida era innanzitutto quella di confermare e rafforzare la presenza dell’Italia qui, così lontano da casa, e di poter rappresentare un sicuro punto di riferimento per tutti i nostri connazionali. In tale ambito, occorreva innanzitutto riuscire a fornire in maniera efficiente i servizi consolari che la collettività necessita, dal classico rilascio dei passaporti alle pratiche più complesse, inclusa l’assistenza ai nostri connazionali, anche di passaggio, nei casi, purtroppo non infrequenti, di emergenza.
Al contempo, è stato necessario impegnarsi al massimo per promuovere il nostro Paese in tutti i possibili campi: artistico, culturale, linguistico, scientifico, commerciale, etc. Il numero di iniziative realizzate, l’impatto positivo registrato tra gli americani e gli stranieri in generale, il numero di visti rilasciati, oltre alla notevole attenzione dedicataci dalla stampa, sono in ogni caso dati che parlano da soli e che coronano di fatto questi anni molto intensi nei quali, con risorse per forza di cose limitate, abbiamo dovuto comunque far fronte ad esigenze molteplici che, per loro natura, sono illimitate e molto spesso imprevedibili. Una missione non impossibile, ma di certo molto complessa, che – grazie soprattutto all’impegno dei miei bravi collaboratori del Consolato – credo sia stata affrontata con risultati molto positivi.
Durante il suo mandato a Mosca ha assistito al passaggio da Boris Eltsin a Vladimir Putin e in America a quello da Obama a Trump. Come ha vissuto questi due passaggi storici così importanti a livello politico?
Da un punto di vista professionale mi ritengo un privilegiato per aver avuto la possibilità di assistere da vicino a delle fasi storiche di transizione così rilevanti in due Paesi grandi, importanti e complessi come la Russia e gli Stati Uniti. Sono esperienze che mi hanno arricchito anche umanamente e che porterò con me come insegnamento prezioso e memoria indelebile.
Sono state tante le iniziative portate avanti con la collaborazione del Sistema Italia a LA. Di quale progetto è più fiero?
La nostra attività si è fatta forte innanzitutto di una collaborazione sempre più intensa e sinergica con tutte le altre istituzioni ufficiali italiane operative a Los Angeles: l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, l’ICE – Italian Trade Promotion Agency, l’ENIT- Italian Government Tourist Board, l’IACCW – Camera di Commercio Italo-Americana. Assieme abbiamo potuto promuovere in maniera coerente e integrata i nostri territori, la nostra cultura, l’arte, la scienza, l’economia, stringendo anche partnership importanti, come da ultimo la scorsa estate, tra partner italiani e i loro omologhi locali, quali ad esempio il Porto di Los Angeles, il Getty Museum ed altre importanti realtà angeline.
Tanti gli scambi con l’Italia, come il ritorno della Testa di Ade e il più recente arrivo del Satiro Ebbro. Molti i rapporti con la sua città, Napoli.
È quasi naturale che il Getty Museum abbia guardato a Napoli, dove ha sede il più grande Museo Archeologico del mondo, e alla Campania per attività di collaborazione relative all’antichità classica, ma anche a tante altre espressioni artistiche che uniscono idealmente queste due grandi città di mare. Per noi si tratta di un partner molto importante che, messe alle spalle alcune esperienze meno entusiasmanti del passato, sperimenta oggi, con noi, una fase di più vitale unità di intenti.
Oltre che a lavorare con alcune realtà della mia città natale, siamo stati impegnati in maniera più ampia sull’intero territorio nazionale. Penso, per citarne solo alcune, alle collaborazioni dell’UCLA con tante Università italiane, ai progetti con la Galleria Borghese di Roma, con il Museo Egizio di Torino, alle iniziative con la Sardegna, con la Sicilia, con il Tri-Veneto, con la Toscana e, quest’anno, anche con la Puglia che quest’anno è stata tra l’altro protagonista alla NIAF e che sarà ancora una volta sotto i riflettori nell’ambito della Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo che avrà luogo al Los Angeles dal 12 al 18 Novembre, in contemporanea con Cinema Italian Style e con la presentazione ufficiale a Hollywood del film italiano candidato agli Oscar “Dogman” di Matteo Garrone.
Che cosa porterà con sé di questi quattro anni a Los Angeles?
Innanzitutto un grande amore per questa città così carica di energia positiva e di capacità di affrontare la vita con energia e senza mai tralasciare l’aspetto umano e la creatività. E’ un lascito importante che, ne sono certo, mi sosterrà anche nella mia prossima esperienza lavorativa in Egitto, un Paese affacciato come l’Italia sul Mediterraneo, di grande vitalità, con una lunga storia comune di amicizia e collaborazione che ha sempre riservato grandissima attenzione all’Italia.
Che cosa le mancherà di Los Angeles?
La luce, i colori, la vivacità di LaLaLand e la sua capacità di farci sognare. Mi mancheranno i tanti amici che ho avuto modo di conoscere in questi anni, mi mancherà un certo atteggiamento positivo di questa città nei confronti della vita con la sua capacità di raccontarsi, di ridere e di riflettere su se stessa. Mi mancherà quel California Dreaming che ha cantato la California come un mondo nuovo e entusiasmante, e che io ho cercato di vivere in pieno.
Ha un messaggio per il prossimo Console Generale? Può rivelarcene il nome?
Si tratta di una collega molto valida, Silvia Chiave, alla quale lascio un messaggio di forte entusiasmo e l’augurio di vivere e lavorare bene e serenamente a Los Angeles come ho avuto la fortuna di poter fare io, godendo del suo sole, dell’oceano la cui vista apre il cuore, dell’amicizia dei losangelini e del calore della nostra splendida comunità italiana!
