You’re young, smart and hold a prestigious degree: the world is at your feet! Or not, because employment opportunities are meagre and you’re still struggling with reaching the end of the month, when you aren’t just living off your parents, at home. Or you may be a trendy professional, well paid and successful, but dangerously close to burning out. You may be curious and in need of some change in your life, just…well, just because. These seem all perfectly decent reasons to try something different and seek a  life changing  experience. 

So, picture this: an idyllic southern Italian village, perched on top of a hill, beautifully nestled within one of Italy’s most picturesque regions and only a stone-throw away from Matera, this year’s European capital of culture. Imagine you could move there for three months and learn all about the way its people have been living for centuries: craftsmanship, agriculture, food.  Everything you can think of, you’ll learn. And you’ll stay there rent free.

This is, in short, the idea sponsored  by AirBnB and introduced by Wonder Grottole, a non-for-profit organization located in Grottole, a small 300 people hamlet in Basilicata. Wonder Grottole has been working hard to save the village, which has been loosing inhabitants and today counts more than 600 empty homes in its historical centre: a place in danger to become a città fantasma, a ghost town and, in truth, far from being the only one in the country. Research conducted by Legambiente, the country’s institution working to track the state of our national environment, shows that over half of Italy’s smallest towns and villages are in danger of disappearing within the next handful of decades. 2.430 places, today home to 3 million Italians, destined to vanish, because no one will be living in them anymore.

The problem is real, then, and Grottole seems to have taken a serious look at ways to keep itself alive, thus creating the Wonder Grottole organisation. Enters AirBnB, which decided to endorse a curious, and certainly interesting, initiative: “sponsoring a unique opportunity for four people to move to the small village of Grottole for three months and experience authentic rural life in Italy.” The project was charmingly named The Italian Sabbatical and to participate you only need to be 18 and willing to live in Grottole for three months, from June to August 2019. 

AirBnB and Wonder Grottole made a fantastic job at presenting the project and, in fact, the village itself: it is a very pretty place indeed and, at least from the pictures, it does look like the most charming of hamlets, a little jewel on top of a hill, with its own castle, medieval walls and cobbled streets. A place where everyone knows everyone and people see to live following the magical, ancestral rhythms of nature. On the initiative’s website, special residents (those who will work side by side with the successful candidates) are introduced to readers: there’s Rocco, hairstylist and beekeeper, from whom you’ll learn all about honey and how to make it; Vincenzo, whose family produces olive oil and who’ll teach you the secret of his frantoio. Then Rosa, “the best cook in town,” ready to share her culinary secrets with us and, finally, Andrea, the founder of Wonder Grottole, ready to explain his plans to keep this wonderful community alive.

The opportunity of a lifetime, a dream come true, the beginning of a new life, where stress, materialism and that endless rush to appearing and possessing will finally end to leave space for what’s really important: savoring the moment, returning to our roots and enjoying meaningful personal connections. A thought yours truly, indeed, had while checking out the Wonder Grottole website. Yet, as incredible as this experience can be, the question remains: can it really save Grottole from dying? 

First of all, let’s think about the logistics of participating: while a survey conducted by AirBnB shows how 1 in 3 Americans would love to take a sabbatical to avoid capitulating to stress, and more than a half said they’d love to learn about a new culture, immersing themselves entirely in it, issues such as affordability and, crucially, the ultimate benefits to small communities of this type of interventions need to be considered.

Money: if you’re selected, you’ll need to renounce to work – and your salary – for three full months. Some may be able to take holidays, sure, but it’s unlikely your boss will be happy to pay full wages while you learn how to make honey in the Italian countryside. In other words, if you’re in full time employment, participating to The Italian Sabbatical may be hard.
If you’re unemployed, retired or actually have been considering to move to the South of Italy to live your Under the Tuscan Sun’s type of dream, things may be different: but while the latter are probably the people Wonder Grottole is looking for, they are also likely to be the smallest group applying to the project. And even if the four winners do, in fact, plan to settle in Grottole after the end of the three months, will their presence truly and deeply make a difference in the depopulation pattern than has left this beautiful place almost entirely inhabited? 

While living a life in the country is fantastic and embracing a more traditional lifestyle has become more and more common, especially among the younger generations, there are necessities to be fulfilled and expectations to be met, when it comes to get people to move somewhere. And unfortunately, the aesthetic and human factors are not the only ones. Will the four successful candidates be offered a job in Grottole, after the end of their three months stay? Is the initiative going to be repeated in time? And what’s the value  of having four strangers living in town for a while, if they are not going to stay and contribute to its economy in the long run?

Grottole looks like a beautiful place that deserves to be valued and discovered, just like many other villages, everywhere on the peninsula. Yet, how and to what extent the presence of four people for three months can save it from disappearing remains difficult to assess. Only time will tell.

Sei giovane, intelligente e in possesso di una laurea prestigiosa: il mondo è ai tuoi piedi! Oppure no, perché le opportunità di lavoro sono scarse e stai ancora lottando per raggiungere la fine del mese, se non stai vivendo con i tuoi genitori, a casa. Oppure potresti essere un professionista di grido, ben pagato e di successo, ma pericolosamente vicino a un esaurimento. Potresti essere curioso e aver bisogno di qualche cambiamento nella tua vita, solo perché beh…perché ti va. Questi sembrano tutti essere motivi validi per provare qualcosa di diverso e cercare un’esperienza che cambia la vita.

Quindi, immaginate questo: un idilliaco villaggio del sud Italia, arroccato sulla cima di una collina, splendidamente situato in una delle regioni più pittoresche d’Italia e solo a due passi da Matera, quest’anno Capitale europea della cultura. Immaginate di poterci stare per tre mesi e imparare tutto sul modo in cui la sua gente vive da secoli: artigianato, agricoltura, cibo. Imparerete tutto quello che riuscite a pensare. E resterete lì con affitto gratuito.

Questa è, in breve, l’idea sponsorizzata da AirBnB e presentata da Wonder Grottole, un’organizzazione senza scopo di lucro di Grottole, un piccolo villaggio di 300 persone in Basilicata. Wonder Grottole ha lavorato duramente per salvare il villaggio, che ha perso abitanti e oggi conta più di 600 case vuote nel suo centro storico: un luogo che rischia di diventare una città fantasma e, in verità, non è l’unico nel paese. Una ricerca condotta da Legambiente, ente italiano che lavora per monitorare lo stato del nostro ambiente nazionale, mostra che oltre la metà dei paesi e dei villaggi più piccoli d’Italia rischia di scomparire entro i prossimi decenni: 2.430 luoghi, che oggi ospitano 3 milioni di italiani, destinati a svanire, perché nessuno ci vivrà più.

Il problema è reale, quindi, e Grottole sembra aver preso in seria considerazione soluzioni per mantenersi in vita, creando così l’organizzazione Wonder Grottole. Qui arriva AirBnB, che ha deciso di sostenere un’iniziativa curiosa e sicuramente interessante: “Sponsorizzare un’opportunità unica per quattro persone di trasferirsi nel piccolo villaggio di Grottole per tre mesi e vivere un’autentica esperienza di vita rurale in Italia”. Il progetto è stato deliziosamente chiamato Anno Sabbatico Italiano e per partecipare bisogna solo avere 18 anni e voler vivere a Grottole per tre mesi, da giugno ad agosto 2019.

AirBnB e Wonder Grottole hanno fatto un lavoro fantastico nel presentare il progetto e, di fatto, il villaggio stesso: è un posto davvero carino e, almeno dalle foto, sembra il più affascinante dei borghi, un piccolo gioiello cima a una collina, con il suo castello, le mura medievali e le strade acciottolate. Un luogo dove tutti conoscono tutti e la gente vive seguendo i ritmi magici e ancestrali della natura. Sul sito web dell’iniziativa, speciali residenti (quelli che lavoreranno fianco a fianco dei candidati vincitori) vengono presentati ai lettori: c’è Rocco, hairstylist e apicoltore, da cui imparerai tutto sul miele e su come farlo; Vincenzo, la cui famiglia produce olio d’oliva e che ti insegnerà il segreto del suo frantoio. Poi Rosa, “la migliore cuoca in città”, pronta a condividere i suoi segreti culinari con noi e, infine, Andrea, il fondatore di Wonder Grottole, pronto a spiegare i suoi piani per mantenere viva questa meravigliosa comunità.

L’opportunità di una vita, un sogno che si avvera, l’inizio di una nuova vita dove lo stress, il materialismo e quell’infinita corsa all’apparire e al possesso finiranno per lasciare spazio a ciò che è veramente importante: assaporare il momento, tornare alle nostre radici e godere di legami personali significativi. Un pensiero che ti viene, in realtà, mentre visiti il sito web Wonder Grottole. Tuttavia, per quanto incredibile possa essere questa esperienza, la domanda rimane: davvero può salvare Grottole dalla scomparsa?

Prima di tutto, pensiamo alla logistica della partecipazione: mentre un sondaggio condotto da AirBnB mostra come 1 americano su 3 amerebbe prendere un anno sabbatico per evitare di capitolare allo stress, e più della metà dice che gli piacerebbe conoscere un nuova cultura, immergendosi interamente in essa, devono essere considerati aspetti come la convenienza economica e, soprattutto, i benefici finali di questo tipo di interventi per le piccole comunità.

Denaro: se si viene selezionati, si dovrà rinunciare al lavoro e allo stipendio per tre mesi interi. Alcuni potrebbero essere in grado di fare le vacanze, certo, ma è improbabile che il vostro capo sia felice di pagarvi stipendi completi mentre imparate a fare il miele nella campagna italiana. In altre parole, se siete assunti a tempo pieno, partecipare a “The Italian Sabbatical” può essere difficile.

Se siete disoccupati, in pensione o state pensando di trasferirvi nel Sud Italia per vivere il vostro sogno di stare “sotto il sole della Toscana”, le cose potrebbero essere diverse: ma mentre i primi sono probabilmente le persone che Wonder Grottole sta cercando, questi rappresentano probabilmente anche il gruppo più piccolo che si candiderà al progetto. E anche se i quattro vincitori avranno in programma di stabilirsi a Grottole dopo la fine dei tre mesi, la loro presenza farà davvero la differenza rispetto allo spopolamento che ha lasciato questo posto meraviglioso, quasi interamente disabitato?

Se vivere una vita in campagna è fantastico e abbracciare uno stile di vita più tradizionale è diventato sempre più comune, soprattutto tra le giovani generazioni, ci sono necessità da coprire e aspettative da soddisfare, quando si tratta di spostare persone da qualche parte. E sfortunatamente, i fattori estetici e umani non bastano. Ai quattro candidati selezionati verrà offerto un lavoro a Grottole, dopo la fine dei tre mesi di permanenza? L’iniziativa sarà ripetuta nel tempo? E qual è il valore di avere quattro estranei che vivono in città per un po’, se non resteranno e contribuiranno alla sua economia a lungo termine?

Grottole sembra un posto bellissimo che merita di essere apprezzato e scoperto, proprio come molti altri villaggi, ovunque nella penisola. Tuttavia, come e fino a che punto la presenza di quattro persone per tre mesi può salvarla dalla scomparsa rimane difficile da valutare. Solo il tempo lo dirà.
