COLUMBUS DAY REFERENCES TO BE REMOVED FROM ASSEMBLY BILL 55

L’Italo-Americano Newspaper has confirmed that Assembly Bill 55—which would have re-designated Columbus Day as Native American Day—has been amended to delete any reference to Columbus Day, and instead, designates the fourth Friday in September as Native American Day.

Columbus Day, which is celebrated by Italian-Americans as a national day of celebration of Italian heritage, will remain intact on the second Monday in October.

The sudden turn-about came the same day that the Honorable Mauro Battocchi, Consul General of Italy in San Francisco, visited Sacramento to meet with officials to discuss this and other issues important to the Italian Community.
